Title Mixing of pseudoscalar-baryon and vector-baryon in the J(P)=1/2(-) sector and the N* (1535) and N* (1650) resonances Type Journal Article

Abstract We study the meson-baryon interaction with J(P) = 1/2 using the hidden-gauge Lagrangians and mixing pseudoscalar meson-baryon with the vector meson-baryon states in a coupled channels scheme with pi N, eta N, K Lambda, K Sigma, rho N, and pi Delta (d wave). We fit the subtraction constants of each channel to the S-11 partial wave amplitude of the pi N scattering data extracted from the partial wave analysis of the George Washington group. We find two poles that we associate to the N*(1535) and the N*(1650) resonances, with negative subtraction constants of natural size, and compare the results with empirical determinations of these pole positions. We calculate the branching ratios for the different channels of each resonance and we find a good agreement with the experimental data. The cross section for the pi(-)p -> eta n scattering is also evaluated and compared with experiment.

Abstract We study the impact of three-body forces on the response functions of cold neutron matter. These response functions are determined in the random phase approximation from a residual interaction expressed in terms of Landau parameters. Special attention is paid to the noncentral part, including all terms allowed by the relevant symmetries. Using Landau parameters derived from realistic nuclear two-and three-body forces grounded in chiral effective field theory, we find that the three-body term has a strong impact on the excited states of the system and in the static and long-wavelength limit of the response functions for which a new exact formula is established.

Title High-accuracy determination of the U-238/U-235 fission cross section ratio up to approximate to 1 GeV at n_TOF at CERN Type Journal Article

Abstract The U-238 to U-235 fission cross section ratio has been determined at nTOF up to approximate to 1 GeV, with two different detection systems, in different geometrical configurations. A total of four datasets has been collected and compared. They are all consistent to each other within the relative systematic uncertainty of 3-4%. The data collected at nTOF have been suitably combined to yield a unique fission cross section ratio as a function of neutron energy. The result confirms current evaluations up to 200 MeV. Good agreement is also observed with theoretical calculations based on the INCL++ /Gemini++ combination up to the highest measured energy. The n_TOF results may help solve a long-standing discrepancy between the two most important experimental datasets available so far above 20 MeV, while extending the neutron energy range for the first time up to approximate to 1 GeV.

Title 1(-) and 2(+) discrete states in Zr-90 populated via the (O-17, O-17 'gamma) reaction Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C

Abstract 2(+) and 1(-) states in Zr-90 were populated via the (O-17, O-17 'gamma) reaction at 340 MeV. The gamma decay was measured with high resolution using the AGATA (advanced gamma tracking array demonstrator array). Differential cross sections were obtained at few different angles for the scattered particle. The results of the elastic scattering and inelastic excitation of 2(+), 3(,)(-) and 1(-) states are compared with distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations, using both the standard collective form factor and a form factor obtained by folding microscopically calculated transition densities. This allowed to extract the isoscalar component of the 1(-) state at 6.424 MeV. The comparison of the present (17O, 17O 'gamma) data with existing (gamma, gamma') and (p, p') data in the corresponding region of the gamma continuum (6-11 MeV), characterized by a large E1 component, shows completely different behaviors of the cross section as a function of the nuclear excitation energy. The comparison of the data with DWBA calculations suggests a decrease of the isoscalar strength in the cross section with increasing excitation energy.

Abstract The level structure of the neutron-rich Cu-69, Cu-71, and Cu-73 isotopes has been investigated by means of multinucleon transfer reactions. The experiment was performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using the AGATA Demonstrator array coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. Lifetimes of excited states in Cu nuclei were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. The resulting electromagnetic matrix elements for transitions from excited states in Cu-69,Cu-71,Cu-73 nuclei are used to assess the collective or single-particle character of these states. The results are compared with predictions of large-scale shell-model calculations, giving further insight into the evolution of the proton pf shell as neutrons fill the 1g(9/2) orbital.

Title Antineutrino induced Lambda(1405) production off the proton Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
  Volume (down) 91 Issue 4 Pages 045201 - 11pp
  Keywords
Abstract We have studied the strangeness-changing antineutrino-induced reactions (v) over bar (l)p -> l(+)phi B, with phi B = K(-)p, (K) over bar (0)n, pi(0)Lambda, pi(0)Sigma(0), eta Lambda, eta Sigma(0), pi(+)Sigma(-), pi(-)Sigma(+), K+Xi(-), and K-0 Xi(0), using a chiral unitary approach. These ten coupled channels are allowed to interact strongly, using a kernel derived from the chiral Lagrangians. This interaction generates two Lambda(1405) poles, leading to a clear single peak in the pi Sigma invariant mass distributions. At backward scattering angles in the center-of-mass frame, (nu) over bar (mu)p -> mu(+)pi(0)Sigma(0) is dominated by the Lambda(1405) state at around 1420 MeV while the lighter state becomes relevant as the angle decreases, leading to an asymmetric line shape. In addition, there are substantial differences in the shape of pi Sigma invariant mass distributions for the three charge channels. If observed, these differences would provide valuable information on a claimed isospin I = 1, strangeness S = -1 baryonic state around 1400 MeV. Integrated cross sections have been obtained for the pi Sigma and (K) over barN channels and the impact of unitarization in the results has been investigated. The number of events with Lambda(1405) excitation in (nu) over bar μp collisions in the recent antineutrino run at the Main Injector Experiment for nu-A (MINER nu A) has also been obtained. We find that this reaction channel is relevant enough to be investigated experimentally and to be taken into account in the simulation models of future experiments with antineutrino beams.

Title beta decay of Cd-129 and excited states in In-129 Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
  Volume (down) 91 Issue 5 Pages 054324 - 11pp
  Keywords
Abstract The beta decay of Cd-129, produced in the relativistic fission of a U-238 beam, was experimentally studied at the RIBF facility at the RIKEN Nishina Center. From the gamma radiation emitted after the beta decays, a level scheme of In-129 was established comprising 31 excited states and 69 gamma-ray transitions. The experimentally determined level energies are compared to state-of-the-art shell-model calculations. The half-lives of the two beta-decaying states in Cd-129 were deduced and the beta feeding to excited states in In-129 were analyzed. It is found that, as in most cases in the Z < 50, N <= 82 region, both decays are dominated by the nu 0g(7/2) -> pi 0g(9/2) Gamow-Teller transition, although the contribution of first-forbidden transitions cannot be neglected.

Abstract We discuss the contributions to the equation of state for the NlLO Skyrme pseudopotential (l = 2,3). We show that by adding fourth- and sixth-order gradient terms, it is possible to fairly reproduce the spin/isospin decomposition of an equation of state obtained from ab initio methods. Moreover, by inspecting the partial-wave decomposition of the equation of state, we show for the first time a possible way to add explicit constraints on the sign of the tensor terms of the Skyrme interaction.

Title High-resolution study of Gamow-Teller excitations in the Ca-42(He-3,t)Sc-42 reaction and the observation of a “low-energy super-Gamow-Teller state” Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C

Abstract To study the Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions from the T-z = +1 nucleus Ca-42 to the T-z = 0 nucleus Sc-42, where T-z is the z component of isospin T, we performed a (p, n)-type (He-3, t) charge-exchange reaction at 140 MeV/nucleon and scattering angles around 0 degrees. With an energy resolution of 29 keV, states excited by GT transitions (GT states) could be studied accurately. The reduced GT transition strengths B(GT) were derived up to the excitation energy of 13 MeV, assuming the proportionality between the cross sections at 0 degrees and B(GT) values. The main part of the observed GT transition strength is concentrated in the lowest 0.611-MeV, J(pi) = 1(+) GT state. All the other states at higher energies are weakly excited. Shell-model calculations could reproduce the gross feature of the experimental B(GT) distribution, and random-phase-approximation calculations including an attractive isoscalar interaction showed that the 0.611-MeV state has a collective nature. It was found that this state has all of the properties of a “low-energy super-Gamow-Teller state.” It is expected that low-lying J(pi) = 1(+) GT states have T = 0 in the T-z = 0 nucleus Sc-42. However, T = 1 states are situated in a higher energy region. Assuming an isospin-analogous structure in A = 42 isobars, analogous T = 1, 1(+) states are also expected in Ca-42. Comparing the Ca-42(He-3, t)Sc-42 and Ca-42(p, p') spectra measured at 0 degrees, candidates for T = 1 GT states could be found in the 10-12-MeV region of Sc-42. They were all weakly excited. The mass dependence of the GT strength distributions in Sc isotopes is also discussed.

Year 2014 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C

Abstract The integral cross section of the C-12(n, p)B-12 reaction has been determined for the first time in the neutron energy range from threshold to several GeV at the n_TOF facility at CERN. The measurement relies on the activation technique with the beta decay of B-12 measured over a period of four half-lives within the same neutron bunch in which the reaction occurs. The results indicate that model predictions, used in a variety of applications, are mostly inadequate. The value of the integral cross section reported here can be used as a benchmark for verifying or tuning model calculations.
