Title (up) A fast algorithm for muon track reconstruction and its application to the ANTARES neutrino telescope Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Astroparticle Physics Abbreviated Journal Astropart Phys.
Volume 34 Issue 9 Pages 652-662
Keywords Neutrino telescope; Track reconstruction
Abstract An algorithm is presented, that provides a fast and robust reconstruction of neutrino induced upward-going muons and a discrimination of these events from downward-going atmospheric muon background in data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope. The algorithm consists of a hit merging and hit selection procedure followed by fitting steps for a track hypothesis and a point-like light source. It is particularly well-suited for real time applications such as online monitoring and fast triggering of optical follow-up observations for multi-messenger studies. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated with Monte Carlo simulations and various distributions are compared with that obtained in ANTARES data.

Title (up) A layer correlation technique for pion energy calibration at the 2004 ATLAS Combined Beam Test Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
Volume 6 Issue Pages P06001 - 35pp
Keywords Calorimeter methods; Pattern recognition, cluster finding, calibration and fitting methods; Calorimeters; Detector modelling and simulations I (interaction of radiation with matter, interaction of photons with matter, interaction of hadrons with matter, etc)
Abstract A new method for calibrating the hadron response of a segmented calorimeter is developed and successfully applied to beam test data. It is based on a principal component analysis of energy deposits in the calorimeter layers, exploiting longitudinal shower development information to improve the measured energy resolution. Corrections for invisible hadronic energy and energy lost in dead material in front of and between the calorimeters of the ATLAS experiment were calculated with simulated Geant4 Monte Carlo events and used to reconstruct the energy of pions impinging on the calorimeters during the 2004 Barrel Combined Beam Test at the CERN H8 area. For pion beams with energies between 20 GeV and 180 GeV, the particle energy is reconstructed within 3% and the energy resolution is improved by between 11% and 25% compared to the resolution at the electromagnetic scale.

Title (up) A minimal Beta Beam with high-Q ions to address CP violation in the leptonic sector Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication European Physical Journal C Abbreviated Journal Eur. Phys. J. C
Volume 71 Issue 6 Pages 1674 - 11pp
Keywords
Abstract In this paper we consider a Beta Beam setup that tries to leverage at most existing European facilities: i.e. a setup that takes advantage of facilities at CERN to boost high-Q ions ((8)Li and (8)B) aiming at a far detector located at L = 732 km in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. The average neutrino energy for (8)Li and (8)B ions boosted at gamma similar to 100 is in the range E(nu) is an element of [1, 2] GeV, high enough to use a large iron detector of the MINOS type at the far site. We perform, then, a study of the neutrino and antineutrino fluxes needed to measure a CP-violating phase delta in a significant part of the parameter space. In particular, for theta(13) >= 3 degrees, if an antineutrino flux of 3 x 10(19) useful (8)Li decays per year is achievable, we find that delta can be measured in 60% of the parameter space with 3 x 10(18) useful (8)B decays per year.

Title (up) A novel gamma-ray imaging method for the pulse-shape characterization of position sensitive semiconductor radiation detectors Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research A Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A
Volume 643 Issue 1 Pages 79-88
Keywords gamma-detector; Pulse shape analysis; Tracking; Semiconductor
Abstract A new technique for the pulse-shape characterization of gamma-ray position sensitive germanium detectors is presented. This method combines the pulse shape comparison scan (PSCS) principle with a gamma-ray imaging technique. The latter is provided by a supplementary, high performance, position sensitive gamma-ray scintillator detector. We describe the basic aspects of the method and we show measurements made for the study of pulse-shapes in a non-segmented planar HPGe detector. A preliminary application of the PSCS is carried out, although a more detailed investigation is being performed with highly segmented position sensitive detectors.

Title (up) A search for new physics in dijet mass and angular distributions in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV measured with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication New Journal of Physics Abbreviated Journal New J. Phys.
Volume 13 Issue Pages 053044 - 44pp
Keywords
Abstract A search for new interactions and resonances produced in LHC proton-proton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy root s = 7 TeV was performed with the ATLAS detector. Using a dataset with an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1), dijet mass and angular distributions were measured up to dijet masses of similar to 3.5 TeV and were found to be in good agreement with Standard Model predictions. This analysis sets limits at 95% CL on various models for new physics: an excited quark is excluded for mass between 0.60 and 2.64 TeV, an axigluon hypothesis is excluded for axigluon masses between 0.60 and 2.10 TeV and quantum black holes are excluded in models with six extra space-time dimensions for quantum gravity scales between 0.75 and 3.67 TeV. Production cross section limits as a function of dijet mass are set using a simplified Gaussian signal model to facilitate comparisons with other hypotheses. Analysis of the dijet angular distribution using a novel technique simultaneously employing the dijet mass excludes quark contact interactions with a compositeness scale 3 below 9.5 TeV.
