Title Measurement of the top quark pair production cross-section with ATLAS in the single lepton channel Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
  Volume 711 Issue 3-4 Pages 244-263
Keywords (down) High-energy collider experiment; Cross-section; Top physics
Abstract A measurement of the production cross-section for top quark pairs (t (t) over bar) in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV is presented using data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are selected in the single lepton topology by requiring an electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum and at least three jets. With a data sample of 35 pb(-1), two different multivariate methods, one of which uses b-quark jet identification while the other does not, use kinematic variables to obtain cross-section measurements of sigma(t (t) over bar) = 187 +/- 11(stat.)(-17)(+18)(syst.) +/- 6(lumi.) pb and sigma(t (t) over bar) = 173 +/- 17(stat.)(-16)(+18)(syst.) +/- 6(lumi.) pb respectively. The two measurements are in agreement with each other and with QCD calculations. The first measurement has a better a priori sensitivity and constitutes the main result of this Letter.

Title Analysis of the quark sector in the 2HDM with a four-zero Yukawa texture using the most recent data on the CKM matrix Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
  Volume 742 Issue Pages 347-352
Keywords (down) Higgs physics; Flavour physics
Abstract In this Letter we analyse, in the context of the general 2-Higgs Doublet Model, the structure of the Yukawa matrices, (Y) over tilde (q)(1,2), by assuming a four-zero texture ansatz for their definition. In this framework, we obtain compact expressions for (Y) over tilde (q)(1,2), which are reduced to the Cheng and Sher ansatz with the difference that they are obtained naturally as a direct consequence of the invariants of the fermion mass matrices. Furthermore, in order to avoid large flavour violating effects coming from charged Higgs exchange, we consider the main flavour constraints on the off-diagonal terms of Yukawa texture ((chi) over tilde (q)(j))(kl) (k not equal l). We perform a chi(2)-fit based on current experimental data on the quark masses and the Cabibbo-KobayashiMaskawa mixing matrix V-CKM. Hence, we obtain the allowed ranges for the parameters (Y) over tilde (q)(1,2) at 1 sigma for several values of tan beta. The results are in complete agreement with the bounds obtained taking into account constraints on Flavour Changing Neutral Currents reported in the literature.

Title Evidence for the spin-0 nature of the Higgs boson using ATLAS data Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
  Volume 726 Issue 1-3 Pages 120-144
Keywords (down) Higgs boson; Spin; Parity
Abstract Studies of the spin and parity quantum numbers of the Higgs boson are presented, based on protonproton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The Standard Model spin-parity J(P) = 0(+) hypothesis is compared with alternative hypotheses using the Higgs boson decays H -> gamma gamma, H -> ZZ* -> 4l and H -> WW* -> l nu l nu, as well as the combination of these channels. The analysed dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.7 fb(-1) collected at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV. For the H -> ZZ* -> 4l decay mode the dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1) collected at root s = 7 TeV is included. The data are compatible with the Standard Model J(P) = 0+ quantum numbers for the Higgs boson, whereas all alternative hypotheses studied in this Letter, namely some specific J(P) = 0(-), 1(+), 1(-), 2(+) models, are excluded at confidence levels above 97.8%. This exclusion holds independently of the assumptions on the coupling strengths to the Standard Model particles and in the case of the J(P) = 2(+) model, of the relative fractions of gluon-fusion and quark-antiquark production of the spin-2 particle. The data thus provide evidence for the spin-0 nature of the Higgs boson, with positive parity being strongly preferred.

Title Search for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons decaying to tau(+)tau(-) pairs in proton-proton collisions sqrt(s)=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
  Volume 705 Issue 3 Pages 174-192
Keywords (down) Higgs boson; MSSM; Tau lepton
Abstract A search for neutral Higgs bosons decaying to pairs of tau leptons with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The analysis is based on proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, recorded in 2010 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1). After signal selection, 276 events are observed in this data sample. The observed number of events is consistent with the total expected background of 269 +/- 36 events. Exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are derived for the production cross section of a generic Higgs boson phi as a function of the Higgs boson mass and for A/H/h production in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) as a function of the parameters m(A) and tan beta.

Title Search for H -> gamma gamma produced in association with top quarks and constraints on the Yukawa coupling between the top quark and the Higgs boson using data taken at 7 TeV and 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
  Volume 740 Issue Pages 222-242
Keywords (down) Higgs boson; Diphoton decay; t(t)over-barH; Top quark; Yukawa coupling; tH
Abstract A search is performed for Higgs bosons produced in association with top quarks using the diphoton decay mode of the Higgs boson. Selection requirements are optimized separately for leptonic and fully hadronic final states from the top quark decays. The dataset used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.5 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and 20.3 fb(-1) at 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess over the background prediction is observed and upper limits are set on the ttH production cross section. The observed exclusion upper limit at 95% confidence level is 6.7 times the predicted Standard Model cross section value. In addition, limits are set on the strength of the Yukawa coupling between the top quark and the Higgs boson, taking into account the dependence of the ttH and tH cross sections as well as the H -> gamma gamma branching fraction on the Yukawa coupling. Lower and upper limits at 95% confidence level are set at 1.3 and +8.0 times the Yukawa coupling strength in the Standard Model.

Title tau -> pi pi pi nu(tau) decays and the a(1)(1260) off-shell width revisited Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
  Volume 685 Issue 2-3 Pages 158-164
Keywords (down) Hadron tau decays; Chiral Lagrangians; QCD; 1/N expansion
Abstract The tau -> pi pi pi nu(tau) decay is driven by the hadronization of the axial-vector current. Within the resonance chiral theory, and considering the large-N-C expansion, this process has been studied in Ref. [1] (D. Gomez Dumm, A. Pich, J. Portoles, 2004). In the light of later developments we revise here this previous work by including a new off-shell width for the lightest a(1) resonance that provides a good description of the tau -> pi pi pi nu(tau) spectrum and branching ratio. We also consider the role of the rho(1450) resonance in these observables. Thus we bring in an overall description of the tau -> pi pi pi nu(tau) process in excellent agreement with our present experimental knowledge.

Title Gravitational waves effects in a Lorentz-violating scenario Type Journal Article

Keywords (down) Gravitational waves; Lorentz symmetry breaking; Polarization states; Quadrupole term
Abstract This paper focuses on how the production and polarization of gravitational waves are affected by spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking, which is driven by a self-interacting vector field. Specifically, we examine the impact of a smooth quadratic potential and a non-minimal coupling, discussing the constraints and causality features of the linearized Einstein equation. To analyze the polarization states of a plane wave, we consider a fixed vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the vector field. Remarkably, we verify that a space-like background vector field modifies the polarization plane and introduces a longitudinal degree of freedom. In order to investigate the Lorentz violation effect on the quadrupole formula, we use the modified Green function. Finally, we show that the space-like component of the background field leads to a third-order time derivative of the quadrupole moment, and the bounds for the Lorentz-breaking coefficients are estimated as well.

Keywords (down) Grand unified theory; Narrow resonance; New gauge boson; Z '; Dilepton; Mass spectrum
Abstract This Letter presents a search for high mass e(+)e(-) or mu(+)mu(-) resonances in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV at the LHC. The data were recorded by the ATLAS experiment during 2010 and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of similar to 40 pb(-1). No statistically significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed in the search region of dilepton invariant mass above 110 GeV. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the cross section times branching ratio of Z' resonances decaying to dielectrons and dimuons as a function of the resonance mass. A lower mass limit of 1.048 TeV on the Sequential Standard Model Z' boson is derived, as well as mass limits on Z* and E(6)-motivated Z' models.

Title High-spin states in Po-212 above the alpha-decaying (18(+)) isomer Type Journal Article
Year 2022 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
  Volume 834 Issue Pages 137457 - 5pp
Keywords (down) gamma spectroscopy; Isomer spectroscopy; High-spin spectroscopy
Abstract The nucleus Po-212 has been produced through the fragmentation of a U-238 primary beam at 1GeV/nucleon at GSI, separated with the FRagment Separator, FRS, and studied via isomer gamma-decay spectroscopy with the RISING setup. Two delayed previously unknown gamma rays have been observed. One has been attributed to the E3 decay of a 21(-) isomeric state feeding the alpha-emitting 45-s (18(+)) high-spin isomer. The other gamma-ray line has been assigned to the decay of a higher-lying 23(+) metastable state. These are the first observations of high-spin states above the Po-212 (18(+)) isomer, by virtue of the selectivity obtained via ion-by-ion identification of U-238 fragmentation products. Comparison with shell-model calculations points to shortfalls in the nuclear interactions involving high- jproton and neutron orbitals, to which the region around Z similar to 100 is sensitive.

Title Study of the hard double-parton scattering contribution to inclusive four-lepton production in pp collisions at root s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
  Volume 790 Issue Pages 595-614
Keywords (down) Four-lepton production; Double Drell-Yan; Double parton-scattering; Higgs golden decay channel
Abstract The inclusive production of four isolated charged leptons in pp collisions is analysed for the presence of hard double-parton scattering, using 20.2 fb(-1) of data recorded in the ATLAS detector at the LHC at centre-of-mass energy root s = 8 TeV. In the four-lepton invariant-mass range of 80 < m(4l) < 1000 GeV, an artificial neural network is used to enhance the separation between single- and double-parton scattering based on the kinematics of the four leptons in the final state. An upper limit on the fraction of events originating from double-parton scattering is determined at 95% confidence level to be f(DPS) = 0.042, which results in an estimated lower limit on the effective cross section at 95% confidence level of 1.0 mb.
