  Abstract We present a search for the decay B+ -> l(+)nu(l) (l = tau, mu, or e) in (458.9 +/- 5.1) x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B-factory. We search for these B decays in a sample of B+B- events where one B- meson is reconstructed as B- -> D(0)l(-)(nu) over barX. Using the method of Feldman and Cousins, we obtain B(B+ -> tau(+)nu(tau)) = (1.7 +/- 0.8 +/- 0.2) x 10(-4), which excludes zero at 2.3 sigma. We interpret the central value in the context of the standard model and find the B meson decay constant to be f(B)(2) = (62 +/- 31) x 10(3) MeV2. We find no evidence for B+ -> e(+)nu(e) and B+ -> mu(+)nu(mu) and set upper limits at the 90% C. L. B(B+ -> e(+)nu(e)) < 0.8 x 10(-5) and B(B+ -> mu(+)nu(mu)) < 1.1 x 10(-5).

  Abstract Using 467 fb(-1) of e(+)e(-) annihilation data collected with the BABAR detector, we measure B(tau(-)->mu(-)(nu) over bar (mu)nu(tau))/B(tau(-)-> e(-)(nu) over bar (e)nu(tau)) = (0.9796 +/- 0.0016 +/- 0.0036), B(tau(-)->pi(-)nu(tau))/B(tau(-)-> e(-)nu(e)nu(tau)) = (0.5945 +/- 0.0014 +/- 0.0061), and B(tau(-)-> K-nu(tau))/B(tau(-)-> e(-)nu(e)nu(tau)) = (0.03882 +/- 0.00032 +/- 0.00057), where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. From these precision similar to measurements, we test the standard model assumption of μ- e and tau – μcharge current lepton universality and provide determinations of vertical bar V-us vertical bar experimentally independent of the decay of a kaon.

  Abstract We present a measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element vertical bar V-cb vertical bar and the form-factor slope rho(2) in (B) over bar -> Dl(-) (nu) over bar (l) decays based on 460 X 10(6) B (B) over bar events recorded at the Gamma(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. (B) over bar -> Dl(-) (nu) over bar (l) decays are selected in events in which a hadronic decay of the second B meson is fully reconstructed. We measure B(B- -> D(0)l(-) (nu) over bar (l))/B(B- -> Xl(-) (nu) over bar (l)) = (0.255 +/- 0.009 +/- 0.009) and B((B) over bar (0) -> D(+)l(-) (nu) over bar (l))/B((B) over bar (0) -> Xl(-) (nu) over bar (l)) = (0.230 +/- 0.011 +/- 0.011), along with the differential decay distribution in (B) over bar -> Dl(-) (nu) over bar (l) decays. We then determine G(1)vertical bar V-cb vertical bar = 42.3 +/- 1.9 +/- 1.4) X 10(-3) and rho(2) = 1.20 +/- 0.09 +/- 0.04, where G(1) is the hadronic form factor at the point of zero recoil.

  Title Measurement of branching fractions of B decays to K-1(1270)pi and K-1(1400)pi and determination of the CKM angle alpha from B-0 -> a(1)(1260)(+/-)pi(-/+) Type Journal Article

  Abstract We report measurements of the branching fractions of neutral and charged B meson decays to final states containing a K-1(1270) or K-1(1400) meson and a charged pion. The data, collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, correspond to 454 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs produced in e(+)e(-) annihilation. We measure the branching fractions B(B-0 -> K-1(1270)(+)pi(-) + K-1(1400)(+)pi(-)) = 3.1(-0.7)(+0.8) x 10(-5) and B(B+ -> K-1(1270)(0)pi(+) + K1(1400)(0)pi(+)) = 2.9(-1.7)(+2.9) x 10(-5) (< 8.2 x 10(-5) at 90% confidence level), where the errors are statistical and systematic combined. The B-0 decay mode is observed with a significance of 7.5 sigma, while a significance of 3.2 sigma is obtained for the B+ decay mode. Based on these results, we estimate the weak phase alpha = (79 +/- 7 +/- 11)degrees from the time-dependent CP asymmetries in B-0 -> a(1)(1260)(+/-)pi(-/+) decays.

  Abstract In a sample of 467 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP- II collider at SLAC we have observed the decay (B) over bar (0) -> Lambda(+)(c)(p) over bar pi(0) and measured the branching fraction to be (1.94 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.50 x 10(-4), where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and the uncertainty on the Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-)pi(+) branching fraction, respectively. We determine an upper limit of 1.5 x 10(-6) at 90% C.L. for the product branching fraction B((B) over bar (0) -> Sigma(+)(c) (2455)(p) over bar) x B(Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-) pi(+)). Furthermore, we observe an enhancement at the threshold of the invariant mass of the baryon- antibaryon pair.

  Abstract Hawking's prediction of thermal radiation by black holes has been shown by Unruh to be expected also in condensed matter systems. We show here that in a black hole-like configuration realized in a BEC this particle-creation does indeed take place and can be unambiguously identified via a characteristic pattern in the density-density correlations. This opens the concrete possibility of the experimental verification of this effect.

  Title Study of encapsulated Tm-170 sources for their potential use in brachytherapy Type Journal Article
  Year 2010 Publication Medical Physics Abbreviated Journal Med. Phys.
  Volume 37 Issue 4 Pages 1629-1637
  Keywords brachytherapy; cancer; dosimetry; prosthetics; radioisotopes; thulium
  Abstract Methods: The authors have assumed a theoretical Tm-170 cylindrical source encapsulated with stainless steel and typical dimensions taken from the currently available HDR Ir-192 brachytherapy sources. The dose-rate distribution was calculated for this source using the GEANT4 Monte Carlo (MC) code considering both photon and electron Tm-170 spectra. The AAPM TG-43 U1 brachytherapy dosimetry parameters were derived. To study general properties of Tm-170 encapsulated sources, spherical sources encapsulated with stainless steel and platinum were also studied. Moreover, the influence of small variations in the active core and capsule dimensions on the dosimetric characteristics was assessed. Treatment times required for a Tm-170 source were compared to those for Ir-192 and Yb-169 for the same contained activity. Results: Due to the energetic beta spectrum and the large electron yield, the bremsstrahlung contribution to the dose was of the same order of magnitude as from the emitted gammas and characteristic x rays. Moreover, the electron spectrum contribution to the dose was significant up to 4 mm from the source center compared to the photon contribution. The dose-rate constant Lambda of the cylindrical source was 1.23 cGy h(-1) U-1. The behavior of the radial dose function showed promise for applications in brachytherapy. Due to the electron spectrum, the anisotropy was large for r < 6 mm. Variations in manufacturing tolerances did not significantly influence the final dosimetry data when expressed in cGy h(-1) U-1. For typical capsule dimensions, maximum reference dose rates of about 0.2, 10, and 2 Gy min(-1) would then be obtained for Tm-170, Ir-192, and Yb-169, respectively, resulting in treatment times greater than those for HDR Ir-192 brachytherapy. Conclusions: The dosimetric characteristics of source designs exploiting the low photon energy of Tm-170 were studied for potential application in HDR-brachytherapy. Dose-rate distributions were obtained for cylindrical and simplified spherical Tm-170 source designs (stainless steel and platinum capsule materials) using MC calculations. Despite the high activity of Tm-170, calculated treatment times were much longer than for Ir-192.

  Abstract In this work we use the Schwinger-Dyson equations to study the possibility that an enhanced gravitational attraction triggers the formation of a right-handed neutrino condensate, inducing dynamical symmetry breaking and generating a Majorana mass for the right-handed neutrino at a scale appropriate for the seesaw mechanism. The composite field formed by the condensate phase could drive an early epoch of inflation. We find that to the lowest order, the theory does not allow dynamical symmetry breaking. Nevertheless, thanks to the large number of matter fields in the model, the suppression by additional powers in G of higher order terms can be compensated, boosting them up to their lowest order counterparts. This way chiral symmetry can be broken dynamically and the infrared mass generated turns out to be in the expected range for a successful seesaw scenario.
