Title Search for Heavy Resonances Decaying into a Photon and a Hadronically Decaying Higgs Boson in pp Collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.

  Keywords
Abstract This Letter presents a search for the production of new heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon using proton-proton collision data at root s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1). The analysis is performed by reconstructing hadronically decaying Higgs boson (H -> b (b) over bar) candidates as single large-radius jets. A novel algorithm using information about the jet constituents in the center-of-mass frame of the jet is implemented to identify the two b quarks in the single jet. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the production cross-section times branching fraction for narrow spin-1 resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon in the resonance mass range from 0.7 to 4 TeV, cross-section times branching fractions are excluded between 11.6 fb and 0.11 fb at a 95% confidence level.

Abstract A search is presented for four-top-quark production using an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are selected if they contain a same-sign lepton pair or at least three leptons (electrons or muons). Jet multiplicity, jet flavour and event kinematics are used to separate signal from the background through a multivariate discriminant, and dedicated control regions are used to constrain the dominant backgrounds. The four-top-quark production cross section is measured to be 24-6+7 fb. This corresponds to an observed (expected) significance with respect to the background-only hypothesis of 4.3 (2.4) standard deviations and provides evidence for this process.

Abstract A search for heavy resonances decaying into a W or Z boson and a Higgs boson produced in proton – proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at root s = 13 TeV is presented. The analysis utilizes the dominant W -> q (q) over bar' or Z -> q (q) over bar and H -> b (b) over bar decays with substructure techniques applied to large-radius jets. A sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) collected with the ATLAS detector is analyzed and no significant excess of data is observed over the background prediction. The results are interpreted in the context of the heavy vector triplet model with spin-1 W' and Z' bosons. Upper limits on the cross section are set for resonances with mass between 1.5 and 5.0 TeV, ranging from 6.8 to 0.53 fb for W' -> WH and from 8.7 to 0.53 fb for Z' -> ZH at the 95% confidence level.

Title Search for Higgs boson decays into two new low-mass spin-0 particles in the 4b channel with the ATLAS detector using pp collisions at root s=13 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D

Abstract This paper describes a search for beyond the Standard Model decays of the Higgs boson into a pair of new spin-0 particles subsequently decaying into b-quark pairs, H -> aa (b (b) over bar)(b (b) over bar), using proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at center-of-mass energy root s = 13 TeV. This search focuses on the range 15 GeV <= m(a) <= 30 GeV, where the decay products are collimated; it is complementary to a previous search in the same final state targeting the range 20 GeV <= m(a) <= 60 GeV, where the decay products are well separated. A novel strategy for the identification of the a -> b (b) over bar decays is deployed to enhance the efficiency for topologies with small separation angles. The search is performed with 36 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected in 2015 and 2016 and sets upper limits on the production cross section of H -> as -> (b (b) over bar)(b (b) over bar), where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a Z boson.

Title Longitudinal Flow Decorrelations in Xe plus Xe Collisions at root s(NN )=5.44 TeV with the ATLAS Detector Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.

Abstract The first measurement of longitudinal decorrelations of harmonic flow amplitudes v(n) for n = 2-4 in Xe + Xe collisions at root s(NN) = 5.44 TeV is obtained using 3 μb(-1) of data with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The decorrelation signal for v(3) and v(4) is found to be nearly independent of collision centrality and transverse momentum (p(T)) requirements on fmal-state particles, but for v(2) a strong centrality and p(T) dependence is seen. When compared with the results from Pb + Pb collisions at. root s(NN) = 5.02 TcV, the longitudinal decorrelation signal in midcentral Xe + Xe collisions is found to be larger for v(2), but smaller for v(3). Current hydrodynamic models reproduce the ratios of the v(n) measured in Xe + Xe collisions to those in Pb + Pb collisions but fail to describe the magnitudes and trends of the ratios of longitudinal flow decorrelations between Xe + Xe and Pb + Pb. The results on the system-size dependence provide new insights and an important lever arm to separate effects of the longitudinal structure of the initial state from other early and late time effects in heavy-ion collisions.

Title Combination of searches for invisible decays of the Higgs boson using 139 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data at root s=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS experiment Type Journal Article

Abstract Many extensions of the Standard Model predict the production of dark matter particles at the LHC. Sufficiently light dark matter particles may be produced in decays of the Higgs boson that would appear invisible to the detector. This Letter presents a statistical combination of searches for H & RARR; invisible decays where multiple production modes of the Standard Model Higgs boson are considered. These searches are performed with the ATLAS detector using 139 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of & RADIC;s = 13 TeV at the LHC. In combination with the results at & RADIC;s = 7 TeV and 8 TeV, an upper limit on the H & RARR; invisible branching ratio of 0.107 (0.077) at the 95% confidence level is observed (expected). These results are also interpreted in the context of models where the 125 GeV Higgs boson acts as a portal to dark matter, and limits are set on the scattering cross-section of weakly interacting massive particles and nucleons.

Abstract This letter documents a search for flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNCs), which are strongly sup-pressed in the Standard Model, in events with a photon and a top quark with the ATLAS detector. The analysis uses data collected in pp collisions at & RADIC;s =13 TeV during Run 2 of the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1. Both FCNC top-quark production and decay are considered. The final state consists of a charged lepton, missing transverse momentum, a b-tagged jet, one high-momentum photon and possibly additional jets. A multiclass deep neural network is used to classify events either as signal in one of the two categories, FCNC production or decay, or as background. No significant ex-cess of events over the background prediction is observed and 95% CL upper limits are placed on the strength of left-and right-handed FCNC interactions. The 95% CL bounds on the branching fractions for the FCNC top-quark decays, estimated (expected) from both top-quark production and decay, are B(t & RARR; u & gamma; ) < 0.85 (0.88+0.37 -0.25) x 10-5 and B(t & RARR; c & gamma; ) < 4.2 (3.40+1.35-0.95) x 10-5 for a left-handed tq & gamma; cou-pling, and B(t & RARR; u & gamma; ) < 1.2 (1.20+0.50 -0.33) x10-5 and B(t & RARR; c & gamma; ) < 4.5 (3.70+1.47 -1.03) x10-5 for a right-handed coupling.

Abstract A measurement of the top-quark mass (m(t)) in the t (t) over bar -> lepton+ jets channel is presented, with an experimental technique which exploits semileptonic decays of b-hadrons produced in the top-quark decay chain. The distribution of the invariant mass m(l mu) of the lepton, l (with l = e, mu), from the W-boson decay and the muon, mu, originating from the b-hadron decay is reconstructed, and a binned-template profile likelihood fit is performed to extract mt. The measurement is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb(-1) of root s = 13 TeV pp collisions provided by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS detector. The measured value of the top-quark mass is mt = 174.41 +/- 0.39 (stat.) +/- 0.66 (syst.) +/- 0.25 (recoil) GeV, where the third uncertainty arises from changing the Pythia8 parton shower gluon-recoil scheme, used in top-quark decays, to a recently developed setup.

Abstract A model-independent search for new physics leading to final states containing a Higgs boson, with a mass of 125.09 GeV, decaying to a pair of photons is performed with 139 fb(-1) of p root s = 13TeV pp collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. This search examines 22 final states categorized by the objects that are produced in association with the Higgs boson. These objects include isolated electrons or muons, hadronically decaying iota -leptons, additional photons, missing transverse momentum, and hadronic jets, as well as jets that are tagged as containing a b-hadron. No significant excesses above Standard Model expectations are observed and limits on the production cross section at 95% confidence level are set. Detector efficiencies are reported for all 22 signal regions, which can be used to convert detector-level cross-section limits reported in this paper to particle-level cross-section constraints.

Title Inclusive-photon production and its dependence on photon isolation in pp collisions at √s=13 TeV using 139 fb-1 of ATLAS data Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 07 Issue 7 Pages 086 - 71pp

Abstract Measurements of differential cross sections are presented for inclusive isolated photon production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV provided by the LHC and using 139 fb(-1) of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment. The cross sections are measured as functions of the photon transverse energy in different regions of photon pseudorapidity. The photons are required to be isolated by means of a fixed-cone method with two different cone radii. The dependence of the inclusive-photon production on the photon isolation is investigated by measuring the fiducial cross sections as functions of the isolation-cone radius and the ratios of the differential cross sections with different radii in different regions of photon pseudorapidity. The results presented in this paper constitute an improvement with respect to those published by ATLAS earlier: the measurements are provided for different isolation radii and with a more granular segmentation in photon pseudorapidity that can be exploited in improving the determination of the proton parton distribution functions. These improvements provide a more in-depth test of the theoretical predictions. Next-to-leading-order QCD predictions from JETPHOX and SHERPA and next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD predictions from NNLOJET are compared to the measurements, using several parameterisations of the proton parton distribution functions. The measured cross sections are well described by the fixed-order QCD predictions within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties in most of the investigated phase-space region.
