Title Superallowed decays within and beyond the standard model Type Journal Article

Abstract (down) This note reviews the role of superallowed transitions in determining the strength of the weak interaction among the lightest quarks and in searching for new physics beyond the standard electroweak model. The two sets of superallowed decays in nuclei considered here are pure Fermi and mirror transitions. The first have been scrutinized for more than 50 years. The most relevant results are presented and the role of the nucleus-dependent radiative correction and nucleus-independent inner radiative correction are reviewed. In this context, the systematic study of mirror transitions started about 15 years ago. Despite the significant progress made since then, the data is still limited by experimental uncertainties. Combining the results from all superallowed transitions, which are fully consistent, provides a test of unitarity of the first row of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, which displays a 2 sigma tension with the standardmodel.Superallowed transitions in beta decay are considered to be the “cleanest” ones in terms of hadronic contributions arising from the nuclear medium. These transitions have been identified since the early days in the study of beta decay and have played a crucial role in determining the strength of weak processes involving the lightest u and d quarks. They offer today a sensitive window to search for NP through high precision measurements. This paper reviews the contributions of pure Fermi and mirror superallowed transitions, to determine parameters within the SMor to constrain NP. It relies in particular on the results of four recent reviews and global analyses which can be found in Refs. [1-4]. Although neutron decay is the simplest mirror transition, the recent progress in neutron decay is not covered here besides mentioning the most relevant results.

Abstract (down) This manuscript summarizes the results of radiative neutron capture cross-section measurements on two stable germanium isotopes, Ge-70 and Ge-73. Experiments were performed at the n_TOF facility at CERN via the time-of-flight technique, over a wide neutron energy range, for all stable germanium isotopes (70,72,73,74, and 76). Results for Ge-70 [Phys. Rev. C 100, 045804 (2019)] and Ge-73 [Phys. Lett. B 790, 458 (2019)] are already published. In the field of nuclear structure, such measurements allow to study excited levels close to the neutron binding energy and to obtain information on nuclear properties. In stellar nucleosynthesis research, neutron induced reactions on germanium are of importance for nucleosynthesis in the weak component of the slow neutron capture processes.

Abstract (down) This Letter reports the observation of WZ gamma production and a measurement of its cross section using 140.1 +/- 1.2 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the bosons decaying leptonically, pp -> WZ gamma -> l'(perpendicular to)nu l(+) l(-)gamma (l(')(+) = e, mu), is measured in a fiducial phasespace region defined such that the leptons and the photon have high transverse momentum and the photon is isolated. The cross section is found to be 2.01 +/- 0.30(stat) +/- 0.16(syst) fb. The corresponding standard model predicted cross section calculated at next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics and at leading order in the electroweak coupling constant is 1.50 +/- 0.06 fb. The observed significance of the WZ gamma signal is 6.3 sigma, compared with an expected significance of 5.0 sigma.

Abstract (down) This Letter reports the observation of WWW production and a measurement of its cross section using detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with two same-sign leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two jets, as well as events with three charged leptons, are selected. A multivariate technique is then used to discriminate between signal and background events. Events from WWW production are observed with a significance of 8.0 standard deviations, where the expectation is 5.4 standard deviations. The inclusive WWW production cross section is measured to be 820 ± 100 (stat) ± 80 (syst) fb, approximately 2.6 standard deviations from the predicted cross section of 511 ± 18 fb calculated at next-to-leading-order QCD and leading-order electroweak accuracy.

Abstract (down) This Letter reports the observation of tau-lepton-pair production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions Pb + Pb -> Pb(gamma gamma -> tau tau)Pb and constraints on the tau-lepton anomalous magnetic moment a(tau). The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.44 nb(-1) of LHC Pb + Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-s = 5.02 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2018. Selected events contain one muon from a t-lepton decay, an electron or charged-particle track(s) from the other tau-lepton decay, little additional central-detector activity, and no forward neutrons. The gamma gamma -> tau tau process is observed in Pb + Pb collisions with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations and a signal strength of mu(tau tau) = 1.03(-0.05)(+0.06) assuming the standard model value for a(tau). To measure a(tau), a template fit to the muon transverse-momentum distribution from tau-lepton candidates is performed, using a dimuon (gamma gamma -> μmu) control sample to constrain systematic uncertainties. The observed 95% confidence-level interval for a(tau) is -0.057 < a(tau) < 0.024.

Abstract (down) This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139 fb(-1) of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688 +/- 23(stat)(-71)(+75) (syst) fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515(-42)(+36) fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Abstract (down) This letter reports the observation of photon-induced production of W-boson pairs, gamma gamma -> WW. The analysis uses 139 fb(-1) of LHC proton-proton collision data taken at root s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment during the years 2015-2018. The measurement is performed selecting one electron and one muon, corresponding to the decay of the diboson system as WW -> e(+/-)nu mu(-/+)nu final state. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with a significance of well above 5 standard deviations consistent with the expectation from Monte Carlo simulation. A cross section for the gamma gamma -> WW process of 3.13 +/- 0.31(stat.) +/- 0.28(syst.) fb is measured in a fiducial volume close to the acceptance of the detector, by requiring an electron and a muon of opposite signs with large dilepton transverse momentum and exactly zero additional charged particles. This is found to be in agreement with the Standard Model prediction.

Abstract (down) This letter reports on the first observation of an octupole band in the neutron-deficient (N = Z + 2) nucleus Xe-110. The Xe-110 nuclei were produced via the Fe-54(Ni-58,2n) fusion-evaporation reaction. The emitted gamma rays were detected using the jurogam 3 gamma-ray spectrometer, while the fusion-evaporation residues were separated with the MARA separator at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyv & auml;skyl & auml;, Finland. The experimental observation of the low-lying 3(-) and 5(-) states and inter-band E1 transitions between the ground-state band and the octupole band proves the importance of octupole correlations in this region. These new experimental data combined with theoretical calculations using the symmetry-conserving configuration-mixing method, based on a Gogny energy density functional, have been interpreted as an evidence of enhanced octupole correlations in neutron-deficient xenon isotopes.

Title Evidence of off-shell Higgs boson production from ZZ leptonic decay channels and constraints on its total width with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
  Volume 846 Issue Pages 138223 - 29pp
  Keywords
Abstract (down) This Letter reports on a search for off-shell production of the Higgs boson using 139 fb(-1) of pp collision data at root s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The signature is a pair of Z bosons, with contributions from both the production and subsequent decay of a virtual Higgs boson and the interference of that process with other processes. The two observable final states are ZZ -> 4l and Z Z -> 2l2 nu with l = e or mu. In the ZZ -> 4l final state, a dense Neural Network is used to enhance analysis sensitivity with respect to matrix element-based discrimination. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with an observed (expected) significance of 3.3 (2.2) standard deviations, representing experimental evidence for off-shell Higgs boson production. Assuming that no new particles enter the production of the virtual Higgs boson, its total width can be deduced from the measurement of its off-shell production cross-section. The measured total width of the Higgs boson is 4.5(-2.5)(+3.3) MeV, and the observed (expected) upper limit on the total width is found to be 10.5 (10.9) MeV at 95% confidence level.
