Title i-TED: A novel concept for high-sensitivity (n,gamma) cross-section measurements Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research A Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A
  Volume 825 Issue Pages 78-86
Keywords Radiative neutron capture; Neutron time-of-flight; Cross-section; Pulse-height weighting technique; Compton imaging
Abstract (down) A new method for measuring (n, gamma) cross-sections aiming at enhanced signal-to-background ratio is presented. This new approach is based on the combination of the pulse-height weighting technique with a total energy detection system that features gamma-ray imaging capability (i-TED). The latter allows one to exploit Compton imaging techniques to discriminate between true capture gamma-rays arising from the sample under study and background gamma-rays coming from contaminant neutron (prompt or delayed) captures in the surrounding environment. A general proof-of-concept detection system for this application is presented in this paper together with a description of the imaging method and a conceptual demonstration based on Monte Carlo simulations.

Title Characterization of a neutron-beta counting system with beta-delayed neutron emitters Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research A Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A
  Volume 807 Issue Pages 69-78
Keywords Beta-delayed neutron emission probability; Neutron and beta counters; Self-triggered digital data acquisition system; Geant4 simulations
Abstract (down) A new detection system for the measurement of beta-delayed neutron emission probabilities has been characterized using fission products with well known beta-delayed neutron emission properties. The setup consists of BELEN-20, a 4 pi-neutron counter with twenty He-3 proportional tubes arranged inside a large polyethylene neutron moderator, a thin Si detector for beta counting and a self-triggering digital data acquisition system. The use of delayed-neutron precursors with different neutron emission windows allowed the study of the effect of energy dependency on neutron, beta and beta-neutron rates. The observed effect is well reproduced by Monte Carlo simulations. The impact of this dependency on the accuracy of neutron emission probabilities is discussed. A new accurate value of the neutron emission probability for the important delayed-neutron precursor I-137 was obtained, P-n = 7.76(14)%.

Title A new algorithm for identifying the flavour of B-s(0) mesons at LHCb Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 11 Issue Pages P05010 - 23pp
Keywords Analysis and statistical methods; Particle identification methods; Pattern recognition; cluster finding; calibration and fitting methods
Abstract (down) A new algorithm for the determination of the initial flavour of B-s(0) mesons is presented. The algorithm is based on two neural networks and exploits the b hadron production mechanism at a hadron collider. The first network is trained to select charged kaons produced in association with the B-s(0) meson. The second network combines the kaon charges to assign the B-s(0) flavour and estimates the probability of a wrong assignment. The algorithm is calibrated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energies. The calibration is performed in two ways: by resolving the B-s(0)-B-s(0) flavour oscillations in B-s(0) -> D-s(-)pi(+) decays, and by analysing flavour-specific B-s2*(5840)(0) -> B+K- decays. The tagging power measured in B-s(0) -> D-s(-)pi(+) decays is found to be (1.80 +/- 0.19 ( stat) +/- 0.18 (syst))%, which is an improvement of about 50% compared to a similar algorithm previously used in the LHCb experiment.

  Abstract (down) A model-dependent amplitude analysis of the decay B (0) -> D(K (S) (0) pi (+) pi (-))K (au 0) is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1), recorded at and 8 TeV by the LHCb experiment. The CP violation observables x (+/-) and y (+/-), sensitive to the CKM angle gamma, are measured to be x- = 0.15 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.01; y- = 0.25 +/- 0.15 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.01; x+ = 0.05 +/- 0.24 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.01; y+ = 0.65(-0.23)(+0.24) +/- 0.08 +/- 0.01; where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second systematic and the third arise from the uncertainty on the D -> K (S) (0) pi (+) pi (-) amplitude model. These are the most precise measurements of these observables. They correspond to gamma = (80 (- 22) (+ 21) )A degrees and , where is the magnitude of the ratio of the suppressed and favoured B (0) -> DK (+) pi (-) decay amplitudes, in a K pi mass region of +/- 50 MeV around the K (*)(892)(0) mass and for an absolute value of the cosine of the K (*0) decay angle larger than 0.4.

Title Measurement of the total cross section from elastic scattering in pp collisions at root s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article

Abstract (down) A measurement of the total ppcross section at the LHC at root s = 8TeV is presented. An integrated luminosity of 500 μb(-1) was accumulated in a special run with high-beta* beam optics to measure the differential elastic cross section as a function of the Mandelstam momentum transfer variable t. The measurement is performed with the ALFA sub-detector of ATLAS. Using a fit to the differential elastic cross section in the -t range from 0.014 GeV2 to 0.1 GeV2 to extrapolate t -> 0, the total cross section, sigma(tot)( pp -> X), is measured via the optical theorem to be sigma(tot)(pp -> X) = 96.07 +/- 0.18 (stat.) +/- 0.85 (exp.) +/- 0.31 (extr.) mb, where the first error is statistical, the second accounts for all experimental systematic uncertainties and the last is related to uncertainties in the extrapolation t -> 0. In addition, the slope of the exponential function describing the elastic cross section at small t is determined to be B = 19.74 +/- 0.05 (stat.) +/- 0.23 (syst.) GeV-2.

Abstract (down) A measurement of the production cross-section of Z bosons in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV is presented using dimuon and dielectron final states in LHCb data. The cross-section is measured for leptons with pseudorapidities in the range 2.0 < eta < 4.5, transverse momenta pT > 20 GeV and dilepton invariant mass in the range 60 < m(ll) < 120 GeV. The integrated cross-section from averaging the two final states is sigma(ll)(Z) = 194.3+/-0.9+/-3.3+/-7.6 pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is due to systematic effects, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. In addition, differential cross-sections are measured as functions of the Z boson rapidity, transverse momentum and the angular variable phi(eta)*.

Title Measurements of the S-wave fraction in B-0 -> K+ pi(-) mu(+) mu(-) decays and the B-0 -> K*(892)(0) mu(+) mu(-) differential branching fraction Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.

Keywords B physics; Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments); Rare decay
Abstract (down) A measurement of the differential branching fraction of the decay B-0 -> K* (892)(0) mu(+)mu(-) is presented together with a determination of the S-wave fraction of the K+ pi(-) system in the decay B-0 -> K+ pi-mu(+)mu(-). The analysis is based on pp-collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1) collected with the LHCb experiment. The measurements are made in bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system, q(2). Precise theoretical predictions for the differential branching fraction of B-0 -> K* (892)(0) mu(+) mu(-) decays are available for the q(2) region 1.1 < q(2) < 6.0 GeV2/c(4). In this q(2) region, for the K+pi(-) invariant mass range 796 < m(K pi) < 996MeV/c(2), the S-wave fraction of the K+pi(-) system in B-0 -> K+pi(-)mu(+)mu(-) decays is found to be F-S – 0.101 +/- 0.017(stat) +/- 0: 009(syst), and the differential branching fraction of B-0 -> K* (892)(0) mu(+)mu(-) decays is determined to be dB/dq(2) = (0.392(-0.019)(+ 0.020)(stat) +/- 0.010(syst) +/- 0.027(norm)) x 10(-7) c(4)/GeV2. The differential branching fraction measurements presented are the most precise to date and are found to be in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

Abstract (down) A measurement of the cross-section for W -> e nu production in pp collisions is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV. The electrons are required to have more than 20 GeV of transverse momentum and to lie between 2.00 and 4.25 in pseudorapidity. The inclusive W production cross-sections, where the W decays to e nu, are measured to be W-sigma(+)-> e(+)nu(e)= 1124.4 +/- 2.1 +/- 21.5 +/- 11.2 +/- 13.0 pb, W-sigma(-)-> e(-)(nu) over bar (e) = 809.0 +/- 1.9 +/- 18.1 +/- 7.0 +/- 9.4 pb, where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, the third are due to the knowledge of the LHC beam energy and the fourth are due to the luminosity determination. Differential cross-sections as a function of the electron pseudorapidity are measured. The W+/W- cross-section ratio and production charge asymmetry are also reported. Results are compared with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Finally, in a precise test of lepton universality, the ratio of W boson branching fractions is determined to be B(W -> e nu)/B(W -> μnu) = 1.020 +/- 0.002 +/- 0.019, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract (down) A measurement of the cross section for the inclusive production of isolated prompt photons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV is presented. The measurement covers the pseudorapidity ranges vertical bar eta(gamma)vertical bar < 1.37 and 1.56 aecurrency sign vertical bar eta(gamma)vertical bar < 2.37 in the transverse energy range 25 < E-T(gamma) < 1500 GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb(-1), recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Photon candidates are identified by combining information from the calorimeters and the inner tracker. The background is subtracted using a data-driven technique, based on the observed calorimeter shower-shape variables and the deposition of hadronic energy in a narrow cone around the photon candidate. The measured cross sections are compared with leading-order and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and are found to be in a good agreement over ten orders of magnitude.

Title Measurement of the correlation between the polar angles of leptons from top quark decays in the helicity basis at root s=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article

Abstract (down) A measurement of the correlations between the polar angles of leptons from the decay of pair-produced t and (t) over bar quarks in the helicity basis is reported, using proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1) at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 7 TeV collected during 2011. Candidate events are selected in the dilepton topology with large missing transverse momentum and at least two jets. The angles theta(1) and theta(2) between the charged leptons and the direction of motion of the parent quarks in the t (t) over bar rest frame are sensitive to the spin information, and the distribution of cos theta(1).cos theta(2) is sensitive to the spin correlation between the t and (t) over bar quarks. The distribution is unfolded to parton level and compared to the next-to-leading order prediction. A good agreement is observed.
