Abstract |
A measurement of the Higgs boson mass is presented based on the combined data samples of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN LHC in the H --> gamma gamma and H --> ZZ --> 4l decay channels. The results are obtained from a simultaneous fit to the reconstructed invariant mass peaks in the two channels and for the two experiments. The measured masses from the individual channels and the two experiments are found to be consistent among themselves. The combined measured mass of the Higgs boson is m(H) = 125.09 +/- 0.21 (stat) +/- 0.11 (syst) GeV. |

Abstract |
A measurement of the production cross-section for Z bosons that decay to muons is presented. The data were recorded by the LHCb detector during pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1). The cross-section is measured for muons in the pseudorapidity range 2.0 < eta < 4.5 with transverse momenta p(T) >20 GeV/e. The dimuon mass is restricted to 60 < M mu+mu- < 120 GeV/c(2). The measured cross-section is sigma(Z ->mu+mu-) = (76.0 +/- 0.3 +/- 0.5 +/- 1.0 +/- 1.3) pb where the uncertainties are due to the sample size, systematic effects, the beam energy and the luminosity. This result is in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. The cross-section is also measured differentially as a function of kinematic variables of the Z boson. Ratios of the production cross-sections of electroweak bosons are presented using updated LHCb measurements of W boson production. A precise test of the Standard Model is provided by the measurement of the ratio sigma(W+) -> mu(+) nu(mu) + sigma(W) -> mu(+) (nu) over bar (mu)/sigma(Z ->mu+mu-) = 0.09 +/- 0.12 +/- 0.05, where the uncertainty due to luminosity cancels. |

Abstract |
A measurement of the top-antitop (t (t) over bar) charge asymmetry is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1) of LHC pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector. Events with two charged leptons, at least two jets and large missing transverse momentum are selected. Two observables are studied: A(C)(ll) based on the identified charged leptons, and A(C)(t (t) over bar), based on the reconstructed t (t) over bar final state. The asymmetries are measured to be A(C)(ll) =0.024 +/- 0.015 (stat.) +/- 0.009 (syst.), A(C)(t (t) over bar) = 0.021 +/- 0.025 (stat.) +/- 0.017 (syst.). The measured values are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. |

Abstract |
A measurement of W boson production in lead-lead collisions at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV is presented. It is based on the analysis of data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2011 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.14 nb(-1) and 0.15 nb(-1) in the muon and electron decay channels, respectively. The differential production yields and lepton charge asymmetry are each measured as a function of the average number of participating nucleons < N-part > and absolute pseudorapidity of the charged lepton. The results are compared to predictions based on next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. These measurements are, in principle, sensitive to possible nuclear modifications to the parton distribution functions and also provide information on scaling of W boson production in multi-nucleon systems. |

Abstract |
A method to find relations between the operators in the mesonic Lagrangian of Chiral Perturbation Theory at order p(6) is presented. The procedure can be used to establish if the basis of operators in the Lagrangian is minimal. As an example, we apply the method to the two-flavor case in the absence of scalar and pseudo-scalar sources (s = p = 0), and conclude that the minimal Lagrangian contains 27 independent operators. |

Abstract |
A metric-affine approach is employed to study higher-dimensional modified gravity theories involving different powers and contractions of the Ricci tensor. It is shown that the field equations are always second-order, as opposed to the standard metric approach, where this is only achieved for Lagrangians of the Lovelock type. We point out that this property might have relevant implications for the AdS/CFT correspondence in black hole scenarios. We illustrate these aspects by considering the case of Born-Infeld gravity in d dimensions, where we work out exact solutions for electrovacuum configurations. Our results put forward that black hole singularities in arbitrary dimensions can be cured in a purely classical geometric scenario governed by second-order field equations. |

Abstract |
A model for S-wave eta pi scattering is proposed which could be realistic in an energy range from threshold up to above 1 GeV, where inelasticity is dominated by the K (K) over bar channel. The T-matrix, satisfying two-channel unitarity, is given in a form which matches the chiral expansion results at order p(4) exactly for the eta pi -> eta pi, eta pi -> K (K) over bar amplitudes and approximately for K (K) over bar -> K (K) over bar. It contains six phenomenological parameters. Asymptotic conditions are imposed which ensure a minimal solution of the Muskhelishvili-Omnes problem, thus allowing one to compute the eta pi and K (K) over bar form factor matrix elements of the I = 1 scalar current from the T-matrix. The phenomenological parameters are determined such as to reproduce the experimental properties of the a(0)(980), a(0)(1450) resonances, as well as the chiral results of the eta pi and K (K) over bar scalar radii, which are predicted to be remarkably small at O(p(4)). This T-matrix model could be used for a unified treatment of the eta pi final-state interaction problem in processes such as eta ' -> eta pi pi, phi -> eta pi gamma or the eta pi initial-state interaction in eta -> 3 pi. |

Abstract |
A model-independent ansatz to describe lepton and quark mixing in a unified way is suggested based upon the Cabibbo angle. In our framework neutrinos mix in a “Bi-Large” fashion, while the charged leptons mix as the “down-type” quarks do. In addition to the standard Wolfenstein parameters (lambda, A) two other free parameters (psi, delta) are needed to specify the physical lepton mixing matrix. Through this simple assumption one makes specific predictions for the atmospheric angle as well as leptonic CP violation in good agreement with current observations. |

Abstract |
A multitude of discrete 2(+) states in Sn-124 with energy up to 5 MeV were populated and identified with the (O-17, O-17'gamma) reaction at 340 MeV. Cross sections were compared with distorted wave Born approximation predictions and in general a good agreement was found. The measured energy and intensity distributions of the 2(+) states are very similar to the predictions based on self-consistent density functional theory and extended QRPA approach accounting for multiphonon degrees of freedom. This provides evidence of the excitation of the pygmy quadrupole resonance in skin nuclei. |

Abstract |
A new digital pulse-timing algorithm, to be used with the future neutron detector array NEDA, has been developed and tested. The time resolution of four 5 in diameter photomultiplier tubes (XP4512, R4144, R11833-100, and ET9390-kb), coupled to a cylindrical 5 in by 5 in BC501A liquict scintillator detector was measured by employing digital sampling electronics and a constant fraction discriminator (CFD) algorithm. The zero crossing of the CM algorithm was obtained with a cubic spline interpolation, which was continuous up to the second derivative. The performance of the algorithm was studied at sampling rates of 500 MS/s and 200 MS/s. The time resolution obtained with the digital electronics was compared to the values acquired with a standard analog CFD. The result of this comparison shows that the time resolution from the analog and the digital measurements at 500 MS/s and at 200 MS/s are within 15% for all the tested photomultiplier tubes. |
