Abstract: The next core-collapse supernova in the Milky Way or its satellites will represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to obtain detailed information about the explosion of a star and provide significant scientific insight for a variety of fields because of the extreme conditions found within. Supernovae in our galaxy are not only rare on a human timescale but also happen at unscheduled times, so it is crucial to be ready and use all available instruments to capture all possible information from the event. The first indication of a potential stellar explosion will be the arrival of a bright burst of neutrinos. Its observation by multiple detectors worldwide can provide an early warning for the subsequent electromagnetic fireworks, as well as signal to other detectors with significant backgrounds so they can store their recent data. The supernova early warning system (SNEWS) has been operating as a simple coincidence between neutrino experiments in automated mode since 2005. In the current era of multi-messenger astronomy there are new opportunities for SNEWS to optimize sensitivity to science from the next galactic supernova beyond the simple early alert. This document is the product of a workshop in June 2019 towards design of SNEWS 2.0, an upgraded SNEWS with enhanced capabilities exploiting the unique advantages of prompt neutrino detection to maximize the science gained from such a valuable event.

Abstract: We present the N-fit algorithm designed to improve the reconstruction of neutrino events detected by a single line of the ANTARES underwater telescope, usually associated with low energy neutrino events (similar to 100 GeV). N-Fit is a neural network model that relies on deep learning and combines several advanced techniques in machine learning-deep convolutional layers, mixture density output layers, and transfer learning (TL). This framework divides the reconstruction process into two dedicated branches for each neutrino event topology-tracks and showers-composed of sub-models for spatial estimation-direction and position-and energy inference, which later on are combined for event classification. Regarding the direction of single-line (SL) events, the N-Fit algorithm significantly refines the estimation of the zenithal angle, and delivers reliable azimuthal angle predictions that were previously unattainable with traditional chi 2-fit methods. Improving on energy estimation of SL events is a tall order; N-Fit benefits from TL to efficiently integrate key characteristics, such as the estimation of the closest distance from the event to the detector. N-Fit also takes advantage from TL in event topology classification by freezing convolutional layers of the pretrained branches. Tests on Monte Carlo simulations and data demonstrate a significant reduction in mean and median absolute errors across all reconstructed parameters. The improvements achieved by N-Fit highlight its potential for advancing multimessenger astrophysics and enhancing our ability to probe fundamental physics beyond the Standard Model using SL events from ANTARES data.

Abstract: General Relativity has shown an outstanding observational success in the scales where it has been directly tested. However, modifications have been intensively explored in the regimes where it seems either incomplete or signals its own limit of validity. In particular, the breakdown of unitarity near the Planck scale strongly suggests that General Relativity needs to be modified at high energies and quantum gravity effects are expected to be important. This is related to the existence of spacetime singularities when the solutions of General Relativity are extrapolated to regimes where curvatures are large. In this sense, Born-Infeld inspired modifications of gravity have shown an extraordinary ability to regularise the gravitational dynamics, leading to non-singular cosmologies and regular black hole spacetimes in a very robust manner and without resorting to quantum gravity effects. This has boosted the interest in these theories in applications to stellar structure, compact objects, inflationary scenarios, cosmological singularities, and black hole and wormhole physics, among others. We review the motivations, various formulations, and main results achieved within these theories, including their observational viability, and provide an overview of current open problems and future research opportunities.

Abstract: We present a new catalog of TeV gamma-ray sources using 1523 days of data from the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) Observatory. The catalog represents the most sensitive survey of the northern gamma-ray sky at energies above several TeV, with three times the exposure compared to the previous HAWC catalog, 2HWC. We report 65 sources detected at >= 5 sigma significance, along with the positions and spectral fits for each source. The catalog contains eight sources that have no counterpart in the 2HWC catalog, but are within 1 degrees of previously detected TeV emitters, and 20 sources that are more than 1 degrees away from any previously detected TeV source. Of these 20 new sources, 14 have a potential counterpart in the fourth Fermi Large Area Telescope catalog of gamma-ray sources. We also explore potential associations of 3HWC sources with pulsars in the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) pulsar catalog and supernova remnants in the Galactic supernova remnant catalog.

Abstract: Neutron capture reactions provide essential nuclear physics input for modeling the synthesis of heavy elements in stars. The growing precision of stellar spectroscopy and isotopic measurements in presolar SiC grains now demands cross sections with improved accuracy over the full energy range, and access to unstable nuclei relevant to slow (s-) process branchings and the intermediate (i-) process. This article reviews recent progress in direct neutron capture measurements, focusing on time-of-flight (TOF) experiments at CERN n_TOF and complementary activation techniques. Substantial advances have been achieved for stable s-only and bottleneck isotopes, significantly improving constraints on s-process models. In parallel, the combination of high instantaneous neutron fluxes and advanced detector systems has facilitated first-time neutron capture measurements on several radioactive branching-point nuclei. Feasibility studies, however, reveal current limitations related to sample availability, background conditions, and restricted energy coverage. In this context, the complementarity between TOF and activation emerges as a central strategy. Future developments, including high-flux facilities and novel inverse kinematics experiments in ion storage rings, are expected to extend the boundaries of neutron capture measurements, overcoming current limitations and helping unlock new frontiers in our understanding of stellar nucleosynthesis.
