Abstract: The production of a Z boson in association with a J/psi meson in proton-proton collisions probes the production mechanisms of quarkonium and heavy flavour in association with vector bosons, and allows studies of multiple parton scattering. Using 20.3 fb(-1) of data collected with theATLAS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at root s = 8 TeV, the first measurement of associated Z + J/psi production is presented for both prompt and non-prompt J/psi production, with both signatures having a significance in excess of 5 sigma. The inclusive production cross-sections for Z boson production (analysed in mu(+) mu(-) or e(+) e(-) decay modes) in association with prompt and non-prompt J/psi (-> mu(+) mu(-)) are measured relative to the inclusive production rate of Z bosons in the same fiducial volume to be (36.8 +/- 6.7 +/- 2.5) x 10(-7) and (65.8 +/- 9.2 +/- 4.2) x 10(-7) respectively. Normalised differential production cross-section ratios are also determined as a function of the J/psi transverse momentum. The fraction of signal events arising from single and double parton scattering is estimated, and a lower limit of 5.3 (3.7) mb at 68 (95)% confidence level is placed on the effective cross-section regulating double parton interactions.

Abstract: We present a non-minimal renormalizable SUSY SU(5) model, with extended Higgs sector and right-handed neutrinos, where the flavor sector exhibits a Q(6) flavor symmetry. We analyzed the simplest version of this model, in which R-parity is conserved and the right-handed neutrino masses in the flavor doublet are considered with and without degeneracy. We find the generic form of the mass matrices both in the quark and lepton sectors. We reproduce, according to current data, the mixing in the CKM matrix. In the leptonic sector, in the general case where the right-handed neutrino masses are not degenerate, we find that the values for the solar, atmospheric, and reactor mixing angles are in very good agreement with the experimental data, both for a normal and an inverted hierarchy. In the particular casewhere the right-handed neutrinos masses are degenerate, the model predicts a strong inverted hierarchy spectrum and a sum rule among the neutrino masses. In this case the atmospheric and solar angles are in very good agreement with experimental data, and the reactor one is different from zero, albeit too small (theta(lth)(13) similar to 3.38.). This value constitutes a lower bound for.13 in the general case. We also find the range of the values for the neutrino masses in each case.

Abstract: We calculate the shape of the pi Sigma and (K) over bar N invariant mass distributions in the Lambda(b) -> J/psi pi Sigma and Lambda(b) -> J/psi (K) over bar N decays that are dominated by the Lambda (1405) resonance. The weak interaction part is the same for both processes and the hadronization into the different meson-baryon channels in the final state is given by symmetry arguments. The most important feature is the implementation of the meson-baryon final-state interaction using two chiral unitary models from different theoretical groups. Both approaches give a good description of antikaon-nucleon scattering data, the complex energy shift in kaonic hydrogen and the line shapes of pi Sigma K in photoproduction, based on the two-pole scenario for the Lambda (1405). We find that this reaction reflects more the higher mass pole and we make predictions of the line shapes and relative strength of the meson-baryon distributions in the final state.

Abstract: A search is presented for narrow diboson resonances decaying to WW or WZ in the final state where one W boson decays leptonically (to an electron or a muon plus a neutrino) and the other W/Z boson decays hadronically. The analysis is performed using an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb(-1) of pp collisions at root s = 8 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the large hadron collider. No evidence for resonant diboson production is observed, and resonance masses below 700 and 1490 GeV are excluded at 95 % confidence level for the spin-2 Randall-Sundrum bulk graviton G* with coupling constant of 1.0 and the extended gauge model W' boson respectively.

Abstract: A search is presented for the direct pair production of a chargino and a neutralino pp -> (X) over tilde (+/-)(1)(X) over tilde (0)(2), where the chargino decays to the lightest neutralino and the W boson, (X) over tilde (+/-)(1) -> (X) over tilde (0)(1) (W-+/- -> l(+/-)nu), while the neutralino decays to the lightest neutralino and the 125 GeV Higgs boson, (X) over tilde (0)(2) -> (X) over tilde (0)(1) (h -> bb/gamma gamma/l(+/-)nu qq). The final states considered for the search have large missing transverse momentum, an isolated electron or muon, and one of the following: either two jets identified as originating from bottom quarks, or two photons, or a second electron or muon with the same electric charge. The analysis is based on 20.3 fb(-1) of root s = 8 TeV proton-proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with the Standard Model expectations, and limits are set in the context of a simplified supersymmetric model.

Abstract: The mass of the top quark is measured in a data set corresponding to 4.6 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions with centre-of-mass energy root s = 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events consistent with hadronic decays of top-antitop quark pairs with at least six jets in the final state are selected. The substantial background from multijet production is modelled with data-driven methods that utilise the number of identified b-quark jets and the transverse momentum of the sixth leading jet, which have minimal correlation. The top-quark mass is obtained from template fits to the ratio of three-jet to dijet mass. The three-jet mass is calculated from the three jets produced in a top-quark decay. Using these three jets the dijet mass is obtained from the two jets produced in the W boson decay. The top-quark mass obtained from this fit is thus less sensitive to the uncertainty in the energy measurement of the jets. A binned likelihood fit yields a top-quark mass of m(t) = 175.1 +/- 1.4 (stat.) +/- 1.2 (syst.) GeV.

Abstract: The performance of the ATLAS muon trigger system is evaluated with proton-proton collision data collected in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 8TeV. It is primarily evaluated using events containing a pair of muons from the decay of Z bosons. The efficiency of the single-muon trigger is measured for muons with transverse momentum 25 < pT < 100 GeV, with a statistical uncertainty of less than 0.01% and a systematic uncertainty of 0.6%. The pT range for efficiency determination is extended by using muons from decays of J/Psi mesons, W bosons, and top quarks. The muon trigger shows highly uniform and stable performance. The performance is compared to the prediction of a detailed simulation.

Abstract: A search for a massive W' gauge boson decaying to a top quark and a bottom quark is performed with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at the LHC. The datasetwas taken at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV and corresponds to 20.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. This analysis is done in the hadronic decay mode of the top quark, where novel jet substructure techniques are used to identify jets from high-momentum top quarks. This allows for a search for high-mass W' bosons in the range 1.5-3.0 TeV. b-tagging is used to identify jets originating from b-quarks. The data are consistent with Standard Model background-only expectations, and upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the W' -> tb cross section times branching ratio ranging from 0.16 pb to 0.33 pb for left-handed W' bosons, and ranging from 0.10 pb to 0.21 pb for W' bosons with purely righthanded couplings. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the W'-boson coupling to tb as a function of the W' mass using an effective field theory approach, which is independent of details of particular models predicting a W' boson.

Abstract: The production of the eta(c)(1S) state in protonproton collisions is probed via its decay to the p (p) over bar final state with the LHCb detector, in the rapidity range 2.0 < y < 4.5 and in the meson transverse-momentum range p(T) > 6.5GeV/c. The cross-section for prompt production of eta(c)(1S) mesons relative to the prompt J/psi cross-section is measured, for the first time, to be s sigma(eta c(1S))/sigma J/psi = 1.74 +/- 0.29 +/- 0.28 +/- 0.18(B) at a centre-of-mass energy root s = 7 TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 fb(-1), and s sigma(eta c(1S))/sigma(J/psi) = 1.60 +/- 0.29 +/- 0.25 +/- 0.17(B) at root s = 8 TeV using 2.0 fb(-1). The uncertainties quoted are, in order, statistical, systematic, and that on the ratio of branching fractions of the (eta c)(1S) and J/psi decays to the p (p) over bar final state. In addition, the inclusive branching fraction of b-hadron decays into (eta c)(1S) mesons is measured, for the first time, to be B(b -> X-eta c) = (4.88 +/- 0.64 +/- 0.29 +/- 0.67(B)) x10(-3), where the third uncertainty includes also the uncertainty on the J/psi inclusive branching fraction from b-hadron decays. The difference between the J/psi and (eta c)(1S) meson masses is determined to be 114.7 +/- 1.5 +/- 0.1MeV/c(2).

Abstract: In the context of two Higgs doublet models, we study the conditions required in order to have stable quasi-alignment in flavour space. We show that stability under the renormalisation group equations imposes strong constraints on the flavour structure of the Yukawa couplings associated to each one of the Higgs doublets. In particular, we find a novel solution, where all Yukawa couplings are proportional to the so-called democratic matrix. This solution is rather unique, since it is the only stable solution which is a good starting point for reproducing the observed pattern of quark masses and mixing. We also showthat this stable solution can be obtained by imposing on the Lagrangian a Z(3)xZ(3)' flavour symmetry. Quark masses of the lighter quark generations are generated through the breaking of this discrete symmetry, and, at this stage, scalar-mediated flavour-changing neutralcurrents arise, but they are naturally suppressed by the smallness of the light quark masses. In this way, we relate Higgs alignment to the hierarchy of the quark masses through a discrete family symmetry.
