Title Sub-MeV dark matter and the Goldstone modes of superfluid helium Type Journal Article

Abstract We show how a relativistic effective field theory for the superfluid phase of 4 He can replace the standard methods used to compute the production rates of low-momentum excitations due to the interaction with an external probe. This is done by studying the scattering problem of a light dark matter particle in the superfluid and comparing to some existing results. We show that the rate of emission of two phonons, the Goldstone modes of the effective theory, gets strongly suppressed for sub-MeV dark matter particles due to a fine cancellation between two different tree-level diagrams in the limit of small exchanged momenta. This phenomenon is found to be a consequence of the particular choice of the potential felt by the dark matter particle in helium. The predicted rates can vary by orders of magnitude if this potential is changed. We prove that the dominant contribution to the total emission rate is provided by excitations in the phonon branch. Finally, we analyze the angular distributions for the emissions of one and two phonons and discuss how they can be used to measure the mass of the hypothetical dark matter particle hitting the helium target.

Title The electro-weak couplings of the top and bottom quarks – Global fit and future prospects Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 12 Issue 12 Pages 098 - 44pp
Keywords Phenomenology of Field Theories in Higher Dimensions
Abstract We evaluate the implications of LHC and LEP/SLC measurements for the electro-weak couplings of the top and bottom quarks. We derive global bounds on the Wilson coefficients of ten two-fermion operators in an effective field theory description. The combination of hadron collider data with Z -pole measurements is found to yield tight limits on the operator coefficients that modify the left-handed couplings of the bottom and top quark to the Z boson. We also present projections for the high-luminosity phase of the LHC and for future electron-positron colliders. The bounds on the operator coefficients are expected to improve substantially during the remaining LHC programme, by factors of 1 to 5 if systematic uncertainties are scaled as statistical ones. The operation of an e(+)e(-) collider at a center-of-mass energy above the top-quark pair production threshold is expected to further improve the bounds by one to two orders of magnitude. The combination of measurements in pp and e(+)e(-) collisions allows for a percent-level determination of the top-quark Yukawa coupling, that is robust in a global fit.

Title Measurement of W-+/- boson production in Pb plus Pb collisions at root s(NN)=5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication European Physical Journal C Abbreviated Journal Eur. Phys. J. C
  Volume 79 Issue 11 Pages 935 - 32pp
  Keywords
Abstract A measurement of W-+/- boson production in Pb+Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV is reported using data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 0.49 nb(-1). The W-+/- bosons are reconstructed in the electron or muon leptonic decay channels. Production yields of leptonically decaying W-+/- bosons, normalised by the total number of minimum-bias events and the nuclear thickness function, are measured within a fiducial region defined by the detector acceptance and the main kinematic requirements. These normalised yields are measured separately for W+ and W- bosons, and are presented as a function of the absolute value of pseudorapidity of the charged lepton and of the collision centrality. The lepton charge asymmetry is also measured as a function of the absolute value of lepton pseudorapidity. In addition, nuclear modification factors are calculated using the W-+/- boson production cross-sections measured in pp collisions. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-leading-order calculations with CT14 parton distribution functions as well as with predictions obtained with the EPPS16 and nCTEQ15 nuclear parton distribution functions. No dependence of normalised production yields on centrality and a good agreement with predictions are observed for mid-central and central collisions. For peripheral collisions, the data agree with predictions within 1.7 (0.9) standard deviations for W- (W+) bosons.

Title Measurement of CP violation in the B-s(0)-> phi phi decay and search for the B-0 -> phi phi decay Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 12 Issue 12 Pages 155 - 34pp
  Keywords Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments)
Abstract A measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in Bs0 ->phi phi = 7 TeV in 2011, 8 TeV in 2012 and 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016, a signal yield of around 9000 Bs0 ->phi phi decays is obtained. The CP-violating phase phi sss over bar is measured to be -0.073 +/- 0.115(stat) +/- 0.027(syst) rad, under the assumption it is independent of the helicity of the phi phi decay. In addition, the CP-violating phases of the transverse polarisations under the assumption of CP conservation of the longitudinal phase are measured. The helicity-independent direct CP-violation parameter is also measured, and is found to be |lambda| = 0.99 +/- 0.05(stat) +/- 0.01(syst). In addition, T-odd triple-product asymmetries are measured. The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis of CP conservation in b over bar -> s over bar ss over bar transitions. Finally, a limit on the branching fraction of the B-0 -> phi phi decay is determined to be Bmml:mfenced close=“)” open=(B0 ->phi phi 2.7x10(-8) at 90% confidence level.

Title Discerning the two K-1 (1270) poles in D-0 -> pi(+) VP decay Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 100 Issue 7 Pages 074018 - 10pp
  Keywords
Abstract Within the chiral unitary approach, the axial-vector resonance K-1 (1270) has been predicted to manifest a two-pole nature. The lowest pole has a mass of 1195 MeV and a width of 246 MeV and couples mostly to K*pi, and the highest pole has a mass of 1284 MeV and a width of 146 MeV and couples mostly to rho K. We analyze theoretically how this double-pole structure can show up in D-0 -> pi+VP decays by looking at the vector-pseudoscalar (VP) invariant mass distribution for different VP channels, exploiting the fact that each pole couples differently to different VP pairs. We find that the final (K) over bar*pi and rho(K) over tilde channels are sensible to the different poles of the K-1 (1270) resonance and hence are suitable reactions to analyze experimentally the double-pole nature of this resonance.
