Abstract |
A benchmark experiment on (208)Pb shows that polarized proton inelastic scattering at very forward angles including 0 degrees is a powerful tool for high-resolution studies of electric dipole (E1) and spin magnetic dipole (M1) modes in nuclei over a broad excitation energy range to test up-to-date nuclear models. The extracted E1 polarizability leads to a neutron skin thickness r(skin) = 0.156(-0.021)(+0.025) fm in (208)Pb derived within a mean-field model [Phys. Rev. C 81, 051303 (2010)], thereby constraining the symmetry energy and its density dependence relevant to the description of neutron stars. |

Abstract |
The Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to neutrinos of all flavors above 0.1 EeV. These interact through charged and neutral currents in the atmosphere giving rise to extensive air showers. When interacting deeply in the atmosphere at nearly horizontal incidence, neutrinos can be distinguished from regular hadronic cosmic rays by the broad time structure of their shower signals in the water-Cherenkov detectors. In this paper we present for the first time an analysis based on down-going neutrinos. We describe the search procedure, the possible sources of background, the method to compute the exposure and the associated systematic uncertainties. No candidate neutrinos have been found in data collected from 1 January 2004 to 31 May 2010. Assuming an E(-2) differential energy spectrum the limit on the single-flavor neutrino is E(2)dN/dE < 1.74 x 10(-7)GeVcm(-2)s(-1)sr(-1) at 90% C.L. in the energy range 1 x 10(17) eV < E < 1 x 10(20)eV. |

Abstract |
We analyse the deviation from universality in leptonic W decays suggested by current PDG data within a general effective field theory approach. Considering the constraints to the New Physics effects coming from Electroweak precision observables we are able to set limits on the amount of universality violation that can be accounted for in a broad class of New Physics models. Our approach starts from a usual Single Operator analysis and extends up to considering the interplay of all the effective operators defined by our EFT. |

Abstract |
A search is presented for microscopic black holes in a like-sign dimuon final state in proton-proton collisions at root s = 8 TeV. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb(-1). Using a high track multiplicity requirement, 0.6 +/- 0.2 background events from Standard Model processes are predicted and none observed. This result is interpreted in the context of low-scale gravity models and 95% C.L. lower limits on microscopic black hole masses are set for different model assumptions. |

Abstract |
The production of (nS) mesons (n = 1; 2; 3) in p Pb and Pb p collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair p sNN = 8 : 16TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 31.8 nb. The (nS) mesons are reconstructed through their decays into two opposite-sign muons. The measurements comprise the di ff erential production cross-sections of the (1 S) and (2 S) states, their forward-to-backward ratios and nuclear modi fi cation factors. The measurements are performed as a function of the transverse momentum pT and rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass frame y of the (nS) states, in the kinematic range pT < 25 GeV/ c and 1 : 5 < y < 4 : 0 (5 : 0 < y < 2 : 5) for p Pb (Pb p) collisions. In addition, production cross-sections for (3 S) are measured integrated over phase space and the production ratios between all three (nS) states are determined. Suppression for bottomonium in proton-lead collisions is observed, which is particularly visible in the ratios. The results are compared to theoretical models. |
