Abstract The T2K experiment has performed a search for nu(e) disappearance due to sterile neutrinos using 5.9 x 10(20) protons on target for a baseline of 280 m in a neutrino beam peaked at about 500 MeV. A sample of nu(e) CC interactions in the off-axis near detector has been selected with a purity of 63% and an efficiency of 26%. The p-value for the null hypothesis is 0.085 and the excluded region at 95% C.L. is approximately sin(2)2 theta(ee) > 0.3 for Delta m(eff)(2) > 7 eV(2)/c(4).

Title Measurements of neutrino oscillation in appearance and disappearance channels by the T2K experiment with 6.6 x 10(20) protons on target Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume (down) 91 Issue 7 Pages 072010 - 50pp

Abstract We report on measurements of neutrino oscillation using data from the T2K long-baseline neutrino experiment collected between 2010 and 2013. In an analysis of muon neutrino disappearance alone, we find the following estimates and 68% confidence intervals for the two possible mass hierarchies: normal hierarchy: sin(2)theta(23) = 0.514(-0.055)(+0.056) and Delta m(32)(2) = (2.51 +/- 0.10) x 10(-3) eV(2)/c(4) and inverted hierarchy: sin(2)theta(23) = 0.511 +/- 0.055 and Delta m(13)(2) = (2.48 +/- 0.10) x 10(-3) eV(2)/c(4). The analysis accounts for multinucleon mechanisms in neutrino interactions which were found to introduce negligible bias. We describe our first analyses that combine measurements of muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance to estimate four oscillation parameters, vertical bar Delta m(2)vertical bar, sin(2)theta(23), sin(2)theta(13,) delta(CP), and the mass hierarchy. Frequentist and Bayesian intervals are presented for combinations of these parameters, with and without including recent reactor measurements. At 90% confidence level and including reactor measurements, we exclude the region delta(CP) = [0.15; 0.83]pi for normal hierarchy and delta(CP) = [-0.08; 1.09]pi for inverted hierarchy. The T2K and reactor data weakly favor the normal hierarchy with a Bayes factor of 2.2. The most probable values and 68% one-dimensional credible intervals for the other oscillation parameters, when reactor data are included, are sin(2)theta(23) = 0.528(-0.055)(+0.038) and vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar = (2.51 +/- 0.11) x 10(-3) eV(2)/c(4).

Abstract We report a measurement of the nu(mu) charged current quasielastic cross-sections on carbon in the T2K on-axis neutrino beam. The measured charged current quasielastic cross-sections on carbon at mean neutrino energies of 1.94 GeV and 0.93 GeV are (11.95 +/- 0.19(stat)(-1.47)(+1.82)(syst)) x 10(-39) cm(2)/neutron, and (10.64 +/- 0.37(stat)(-1.65)(+2.03)(syst)) x 10(-39) cm(2)/neutron, respectively. These results agree well with the predictions of neutrino interaction models. In addition, we investigated the effects of the nuclear model and the multi-nucleon interaction.

Title Measurement of the electron neutrino charged-current interaction rate on water with the T2K ND280 pi(0) detector Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume (down) 91 Issue 11 Pages 112010 - 11pp

Abstract This paper presents a measurement of the charged current interaction rate of the electron neutrino beam component of the beam above 1.5 GeV using the large fiducial mass of the T2K pi(0) detector. The predominant portion of the v(e) flux (similar to 85%) at these energies comes from kaon decays. The measured ratio of the observed beam interaction rate to the predicted rate in the detector with water targets filled is 0.89 +/- 0.08(stat) +/- 0.11(sys), and with the water targets emptied is 0.90 +/- 0.09(stat) +/- 0.13 (sys). The ratio obtained for the interactions on water only from an event subtraction method is 0.87 +/- 0.33(stat) +/- 0.21(sys). This is the first measurement of the interaction rate of electron neutrinos on water, which is particularly of interest to experiments with water Cherenkov detectors.

Abstract We report a measurement of the nu(mu) inclusive charged current cross sections on iron and hydrocarbon in the Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) on-axis neutrino beam. The measured inclusive charged current cross sections on iron and hydrocarbon averaged over the T2K on-axis flux with a mean neutrino energy of 1.51 GeVare (1.444 +/- 0.002(stat)(-0.157)(+0.189)- (syst)) x 10(-38) cm(2)/ nucleon and (1.379 +/- 0.009(stat)(-0.147)(+0.178) (syst)) x 10(-38) 38 cm(2)/ nucleon, respectively, and their cross-section ratio is 1.047 +/- 0.007(stat) +/- 0.035(syst). These results agree well with the predictions of the neutrino interaction model, and thus we checked the correct treatment of the nuclear effect for iron and hydrocarbon targets in the model within the measurement precisions.

Title Measurement of the neutrino-oxygen neutral-current interaction cross section by observing nuclear deexcitation gamma rays Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume (down) 90 Issue 7 Pages 072012 - 11pp

Abstract We report the first measurement of the neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic (NCQE) cross section gamma It is obtained by observing nuclear deexcitation. rays which follow neutrino-oxygen interactions at the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov detector. We use T2K data corresponding to 3.01 x 10(20) protons on target. By selecting only events during the T2K beam window and with well-reconstructed vertices in the fiducial volume, the large background rate from natural radioactivity is dramatically reduced. We observe 43 events in the 4-30 MeV reconstructed energy window, compared with an expectation of 51.0, which includes an estimated 16.2 background events. The background is primarily nonquasielastic neutral-current interactions and has only 1.2 events from natural radioactivity. The flux-averaged NCQE cross section we measure is 1.55 x 10(-38) cm(2) with a 68% confidence interval of (1.22, 2.20) x 10(-38) cm(2) at a median neutrino energy of 630 MeV, compared with the theoretical prediction of 2.01 x 10(-38) cm(2).

Title Light sterile neutrino sensitivity at the nuSTORM facility Type Journal Article

Abstract A facility that can deliver beams of electron and muon neutrinos from the decay of a stored muon beam has the potential to unambiguously resolve the issue of the evidence for light sterile neutrinos that arises in short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments and from estimates of the effective number of neutrino flavors from fits to cosmological data. In this paper, we show that the nuSTORM facility, with stored muons of 3.8 GeV/c +/- 10%, will be able to carry out a conclusive muon neutrino appearance search for sterile neutrinos and test the LSND and MiniBooNE experimental signals with 10 sigma sensitivity, even assuming conservative estimates for the systematic uncertainties. This experiment would add greatly to our knowledge of the contribution of light sterile neutrinos to the number of effective neutrino flavors from the abundance of primordial helium production and from constraints on neutrino energy density from the cosmic microwave background. The appearance search is complemented by a simultaneous muon neutrino disappearance analysis that will facilitate tests of various sterile neutrino models.

Title Measurement of the intrinsic electron neutrino component in the T2K neutrino beam with the ND280 detector Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D

Abstract The T2K experiment has reported the first observation of the appearance of electron neutrinos in a muon neutrino beam. The main and irreducible background to the appearance signal comes from the presence in the neutrino beam of a small intrinsic component of electron neutrinos originating from muon and kaon decays. In T2K, this component is expected to represent 1.2% of the total neutrino flux. A measurement of this component using the near detector (ND280), located 280 m from the target, is presented. The charged current interactions of electron neutrinos are selected by combining the particle identification capabilities of both the time projection chambers and electromagnetic calorimeters of ND280. The measured ratio between the observed electron neutrino beam component and the prediction is 1.01 +/- 0.10 providing a direct confirmation of the neutrino fluxes and neutrino cross section modeling used for T2K neutrino oscillation analyses. Electron neutrinos coming from muons and kaons decay are also separately measured, resulting in a ratio with respect to the prediction of 0.68 +/- 0.30 and 1.10 +/- 0.14, respectively.

Abstract The T2K Collaboration reports evidence for electron neutrino appearance at the atmospheric mass splitting, vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar approximate to 2.4 X 10(-3) eV(2). An excess of electron neutrino interactions over background is observed from a muon neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV at the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector 295 km from the beam's origin. Signal and background predictions are constrained by data from near detectors located 280 m from the neutrino production target. We observe 11 electron neutrino candidate events at the SK detector when a background of 3.3 +/- 0.4(syst) events is expected. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with a p value of 0.0009 (3.1 sigma), and a fit assuming nu(mu) -> nu(e) oscillations with sin (2)2 theta(23) = 1, delta(CP) = 0 and vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar = 2.4 X 10(-3) eV(2) yields sin (2)2 theta(13) = 0.088(-0.039)(+0.049)(stat + syst).

Abstract The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) will be a powerful tool for a variety of physics topics. The high-intensity proton beams provide a large neutrino flux, sampled by a near detector system consisting of a combination of capable precision detectors, and by the massive far detector system located deep underground. This configuration sets up DUNE as a machine for discovery, as it enables opportunities not only to perform precision neutrino measurements that may uncover deviations from the present three-flavor mixing paradigm, but also to discover new particles and unveil new interactions and symmetries beyond those predicted in the Standard Model (SM). Of the many potential beyond the Standard Model (BSM) topics DUNE will probe, this paper presents a selection of studies quantifying DUNE's sensitivities to sterile neutrino mixing, heavy neutral leptons, non-standard interactions, CPT symmetry violation, Lorentz invariance violation, neutrino trident production, dark matter from both beam induced and cosmogenic sources, baryon number violation, and other new physics topics that complement those at high-energy colliders and significantly extend the present reach.
