Title Laser calibration of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter during LHC Run 2 Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 18 Issue 6 Pages P06023 - 35pp
Keywords Calorimeter methods; Photon detectors for UV; visible and IR photons (vacuum) (photomultipliers; HPDs; others); Calorimeters; Scintillators; scintillation and light emission processes (solid; gas and liquid scintillators)
Abstract This article reports the laser calibration of the hadronic Tile Calorimeter of the ATLAS experiment in the LHC Run 2 data campaign. The upgraded Laser II calibration system is described. The system was commissioned during the first LHC Long Shutdown, exhibiting a stability better than 0.8% for the laser light monitoring. The methods employed to derive the detector calibration factors with data from the laser calibration runs are also detailed. These allowed to correct for the response fluctuations of the 9852 photomultiplier tubes of the Tile Calorimeter with a total uncertainty of 0.5% plus a luminosity-dependent sub-dominant term. Finally, we report the regular monitoring and performance studies using laser events in both standalone runs and during proton collisions. These studies include channel timing and quality inspection, and photomultiplier linearity and response dependence on anode current.

Title EUDAQ – a data acquisition software framework for common beam telescopes Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 15 Issue 1 Pages P01038 - 30pp
Keywords Data acquisition concepts; Detector control systems (detector and experiment monitoring and slow-control systems, architecture, hardware, algorithms, databases); Particle tracking detectors; Calorimeters
Abstract EUDAQ is a generic data acquisition software developed for use in conjunction with common beam telescopes at charged particle beam lines. Providing high-precision reference tracks for performance studies of new sensors, beam telescopes are essential for the research and development towards future detectors for high-energy physics. As beam time is a highly limited resource, EUDAQ has been designed with reliability and ease-of-use in mind. It enables flexible integration of different independent devices under test via their specific data acquisition systems into a top-level framework. EUDAQ controls all components globally, handles the data flow centrally and synchronises and records the data streams. Over the past decade, EUDAQ has been deployed as part of a wide range of successful test beam campaigns and detector development applications.

Title The C-Band accelerating structures for SPARC photoinjector energy upgrade Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 8 Issue Pages P05004 - 24pp
Keywords Acceleration cavities and magnets superconducting (high-temperature superconductor; radiation hardened magnets; normal-conducting; permanent magnet devices; wigglers and undulators); Accelerator Subsystems and Technologies; Instrumentation for FEL
Abstract The use of C-Band structures for electron acceleration and production of high quality beams has been proposed and adopted in several linac projects all over the world. The two main projects that adopted such type of structures are the Japanese Free Electron Laser (FEL) project in Spring-8 and the SwissFEL project at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). Also the energy upgrade of the SPARC photo-injector at LNF-INFN (Italy) from 150 to more than 240 MeV will be done by replacing a low gradient S-Band accelerating structure with two C-band structures. The structures are Traveling Wave (TW) and Constant Impedance (CI), have symmetric axial input couplers and have been optimized to work with a SLED RF input pulse. The paper presents the design criteria of the structures, the realization procedure and the low and high power RF test results on a prototype. The high power tests have been carried out by the Frascati INFN Laboratories in close collaboration with the Japanese Laboratory KEK. Experimental results confirmed the feasibility of the operation of the prototype at 50 MV/m with about 10(6) breakdowns per pulse per meter. Such high gradients have not been reached before in C-Band systems and demonstrated the possibility to use C-band accelerators, if needed, at such high field level. The results of the internal inspection of the structure after the high power test are also presented.

Title Cryogenic characterization of Hamamatsu HWB MPPCs for the DUNE photon detection system Type Journal Article
Year 2024 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 19 Issue 1 Pages T01007 - 27pp
Keywords Cryogenic detectors; Photon detectors for UV, visible and IR photons (solid-state); Photon detectors for UV, visible and IR photons (solid-state) (PIN diodes, APDs, Si-PMTs, G-APDs, CCDs, EBCCDs, EMCCDs, CMOS imagers, etc)
Abstract The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a next generation experiment aimed to study neutrino oscillation. Its long-baseline configuration will exploit a Near Detector (ND) and a Far Detector (FD) located at a distance of similar to 1300 km. The FD will consist of four Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) modules. A Photon Detection System (PDS) will be used to detect the scintillation light produced inside the detector after neutrino interactions. The PDS will be based on light collectors coupled to Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs). Different photosensor technologies have been proposed and produced in order to identify the best samples to fullfill the experiment requirements. In this paper, we present the procedure and results of a validation campaign for the Hole Wire Bonding (HWB) MPPCs samples produced by Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (HPK) for the DUNE experiment, referring to them as 'SiPMs'. The protocol for a characterization at cryogenic temperature (77 K) is reported. We present the down-selection criteria and the results obtained during the selection campaign undertaken, along with a study of the main sources of noise of the SiPMs including the investigation of a newly observed phenomenon in this field.

Title Integrated cooling channels in position-sensitive silicon detectors Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 11 Issue Pages P06018 - 15pp
Keywords Particle tracking detectors; Particle tracking detectors (Solid-state detectors)
Abstract We present an approach to construct position-sensitive silicon detectors with an integrated cooling circuit. Tests on samples demonstrate that a very modest liquid flow very effectively cool the devices up to a power dissipation of over 10 W/cm(2). The liquid flow is found to have a negligible impact on the mechanical stability. A finite-element simulation predicts the cooling performance to an accuracy of approximately 10%.

Title The positioning system of the ANTARES Neutrino Telescope Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 7 Issue Pages T08002 - 20pp
Keywords Timing detectors; Detector modelling and simulations II (electric fields, charge transport, multiplication and induction, pulse formation, electron emission, etc); Detector alignment and calibration methods (lasers, sources, particle-beams); Detector control systems (detector and experiment monitoring and slow-control systems, architecture, hardware, algorithms, databases)
Abstract The ANTARES neutrino telescope, located 40km off the coast of Toulon in the Mediterranean Sea at a mooring depth of about 2475m, consists of twelve detection lines equipped typically with 25 storeys. Every storey carries three optical modules that detect Cherenkov light induced by charged secondary particles (typically muons) coming from neutrino interactions. As these lines are flexible structures fixed to the sea bed and held taut by a buoy, sea currents cause the lines to move and the storeys to rotate. The knowledge of the position of the optical modules with a precision better than 10cm is essential for a good reconstruction of particle tracks. In this paper the ANTARES positioning system is described. It consists of an acoustic positioning system, for distance triangulation, and a compass-tiltmeter system, for the measurement of the orientation and inclination of the storeys. Necessary corrections are discussed and the results of the detector alignment procedure are described.

Title Forward tracking at the next e(+)e(-) collider part II: experimental challenges and detector design Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 8 Issue Pages T06001 - 26pp
Keywords Particle tracking detectors; Large detector systems for particle and astroparticle physics; Particle tracking detectors (Solid-state detectors)
Abstract We present the second in a series of studies into the forward tracking system for a future linear e(+)e(-) collider with a center-of-mass energy in the range from 250 GeV to 3 TeV. In this note a number of specific challenges are investigated, which have caused a degradation of the tracking and vertexing performance in the forward region in previous experiments. We perform a quantitative analysis of the dependence of the tracking performance on detector design parameters and identify several ways to mitigate the performance loss for charged particles emitted at shallow angle.

Title Electron and photon energy calibration with the ATLAS detector using 2015-2016 LHC proton-proton collision data Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 14 Issue Pages P03017 - 60pp
Keywords Calorimeter methods; Pattern recognition, cluster finding, calibration and fitting methods; Performance of High Energy Physics Detectors
Abstract This paper presents the electron and photon energy calibration obtained with the ATLAS detector using about 36 fb(-1) of LHC proton-proton collision data recorded at root s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. The different calibration steps applied to the data and the optimization of the reconstruction of electron and photon energies are discussed. The absolute energy scale is set using a large sample of Z boson decays into electron-positron pairs. The systematic uncertainty in the energy scale calibration varies between 0.03% to 0.2% in most of the detector acceptance for electrons with transverse momentum close to 45 GeV. For electrons with transverse momentum of 10 GeV the typical uncertainty is 0.3% to 0.8% and it varies between 0.25% and 1% for photons with transverse momentum around 60 GeV. Validations of the energy calibration with J/psi -> e(+)e(-) decays and radiative Z boson decays are also presented.

Title Modelling radiation damage to pixel sensors in the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 14 Issue Pages P06012 - 52pp
Keywords Detector modelling and simulations II (electric fields, charge transport, multiplication and induction, pulse formation, electron emission, etc); Radiation-hard detectors; Solid state detectors
Abstract Silicon pixel detectors are at the core of the current and planned upgrade of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Given their close proximity to the interaction point, these detectors will be exposed to an unprecedented amount of radiation over their lifetime. The current pixel detector will receive damage from non-ionizing radiation in excess of 10(15) 1 MeV n(eq)/cm(2), while the pixel detector designed for the high-luminosity LHC must cope with an order of magnitude larger fluence. This paper presents a digitization model incorporating effects of radiation damage to the pixel sensors. The model is described in detail and predictions for the charge collection efficiency and Lorentz angle are compared with collision data collected between 2015 and 2017 (<= 10(15) 1 MeV n(eq)/cm(2)).

Title Comparison between simulated and observed LHC beam backgrounds in the ATLAS experiment at E-beam=4 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 13 Issue Pages P12006 - 41pp
Keywords Accelerator modelling and simulations (multi-particle dynamics; single-particle dynamics); Radiation calculations; Simulation methods and programs
Abstract Results of dedicated Monte Carlo simulations of beam-induced background (BIB) in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented and compared with data recorded in 2012. During normal physics operation this background arises mainly from scattering of the 4 TeV protons on residual gas in the beam pipe. Methods of reconstructing the BIB signals in the ATLAS detector, developed and implemented in the simulation chain based on the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation package, are described. The interaction rates are determined from the residual gas pressure distribution in the LHC ring in order to set an absolute scale on the predicted rates of BIB so that they can be compared quantitatively with data. Through these comparisons the origins of the BIB leading to different observables in the ATLAS detectors are analysed. The level of agreement between simulation results and BIB measurements by ATLAS in 2012 demonstrates that a good understanding of the origin of BIB has been reached.
