Title Prompt and nonprompt ψ(2S) production in pPb collisions at √sNN = 8.16 TeV Type Journal Article
Year (down) 2024 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 04 Issue 4 Pages 111 - 52pp
Keywords QCD; Heavy Quark Production; Particle and Resonance Production; Hadron-Hadron Scattering
Abstract The production of psi(2S) mesons in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root s(NN) = 8.16TeV is studied with the LHCb detector using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34 nb(-1). The prompt and nonprompt psi(2S) production cross-sections and the ratio of the psi(2S) to J/psi cross-section are measured as a function of the meson transverse momentum and rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass frame, together with forward-to-backward ratios and nuclear modification factors. The production of prompt psi(2S) is observed to be more suppressed compared to pp collisions than the prompt J/psi production, while the nonprompt productions have similar suppression factors.

Title Search for CP violation in the phase space of D0 → KS0 K± π∓ decays with the energy test Type Journal Article
Year (down) 2024 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 03 Issue 3 Pages 107 - 20pp
Keywords Charm Physics; CP Violation; Hadron-Hadron Scattering
Abstract A search for CP violation in D-0 -> (KSK+)-K-0 pi(-) and D-0 -> (KSK-)-K-0 pi(+) decays is reported. The search is performed using an unbinned model-independent method known as the energy test that probes local CP violation in the phase space of the decays. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb(-1) collected in proton-proton collisions by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 13TeV, amounting to approximately 950 thousand and 620 thousand signal candidates for the D-0 -> (KSK-)-K-0 pi(+) and D-0 -> (KSK+)-K-0 pi(-) modes, respectively. The method is validated using D-0 -> K-pi(+)pi(-)pi(+) and D-0 -> K-S(0)pi(+)pi(-) decays, where CP-violating effects are expected to be negligible, and using background-enhanced regions of the signal decays. The results are consistent with CP symmetry in both the D-0 -> (KSK-)-K-0 pi(+) and the D-0 -> (KSK+)-K-0 pi(-) decays, with p-values for the hypothesis of no CP violation of 70% and 66%, respectively.

Title Search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons in final states with two same-sign or three leptons with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year (down) 2024 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 02 Issue 2 Pages 107 - 55pp
Keywords Beyond Standard Model; Hadron-Hadron Scattering; Lepton Production; Supersymmetry
Abstract A search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons is reported. The search targets a final state with exactly two leptons with same-sign electric charge or at least three leptons without any charge requirement. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Multiple signal regions are defined, targeting several SUSY simplified models yielding the desired final states. A single control region is used to constrain the normalisation of the WZ + jets background. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted in the context of several supersymmetric models featuring R-parity conservation or R-parity violation, yielding exclusion limits surpassing those from previous searches. In models considering gluino (squark) pair production, gluino (squark) masses up to 2.2 (1.7) TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Title Neutrino structure functions from GeV to EeV energies Type Journal Article
Year (down) 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 05 Issue 5 Pages 149 - 78pp

Abstract The interpretation of present and future neutrino experiments requires accurate theoretical predictions for neutrino-nucleus scattering rates. Neutrino structure functions can be reliably evaluated in the deep-inelastic scattering regime within the perturbative QCD (pQCD) framework. At low momentum transfers (Q(2) less than or similar to few GeV2), inelastic structure functions are however affected by large uncertainties which distort event rate predictions for neutrino energies E-nu up to the TeV scale. Here we present a determination of neutrino inelastic structure functions valid for the complete range of energies relevant for phenomenology, from the GeV region entering oscillation analyses to the multi-EeV region accessible at neutrino telescopes. Our NNSF nu approach combines a machine-learning parametrisation of experimental data with pQCD calculations based on state-of-the-art analyses of proton and nuclear parton distributions (PDFs). We compare our determination to other calculations, in particular to the popular Bodek-Yang model. We provide updated predictions for inclusive cross sections for a range of energies and target nuclei, including those relevant for LHC far-forward neutrino experiments such as FASER nu, SND@LHC, and the Forward Physics Facility. The NNSF nu determination is made available as fast interpolation LHAPDF grids, and it can be accessed both through an independent driver code and directly interfaced to neutrino event generators such as GENIE.

Title Search for long-lived, massive particles in events with displaced vertices and multiple jets in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year (down) 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 06 Issue 6 Pages 200 - 49pp
Keywords Beyond Standard Model; Hadron-Hadron Scattering; Supersymmetry
Abstract A search for long-lived particles decaying into hadrons is presented. The analysis uses 139 fb(-1) of pp collision data collected at root s = 13TeV by the ATLAS detector at the LHC using events that contain multiple energetic jets and a displaced vertex. The search employs dedicated reconstruction techniques that significantly increase the sensitivity to longlived particles decaying in the ATLAS inner detector. Background estimates for Standard Model processes and instrumental effects are extracted from data. The observed event yields are compatible with those expected from background processes. The results are used to set limits at 95% confidence level on model-independent cross sections for processes beyond the Standard Model, and on scenarios with pair-production of supersymmetric particles with long-lived electroweakinos that decay via a small R-parity-violating coupling. The pair-production of electroweakinos with masses below 1.5TeV is excluded for mean proper lifetimes in the range from 0.03 ns to 1 ns. When produced in the decay of m((g) over tilde) – 2.4TeV gluinos, electroweakinos with m((X) over tilde (0)(1)) = 1.5TeV are excluded with lifetimes in the range of 0.02 ns to 4 ns.

Title Measurement of single top-quark production in the s-channel in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year (down) 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 06 Issue 6 Pages 191 - 47pp
  Keywords Hadron-Hadron Scattering; Top Physics
Abstract A measurement of single top-quark production in the s-channel is performed in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1). The analysis is performed on events with an electron or muon, missing transverse momentum and exactly two b-tagged jets in the final state. A discriminant based on matrix element calculations is used to separate single-top-quark s-channel events from the main background contributions, which are top-quark pair production and W-boson production in association with jets. The observed (expected) signal significance over the background-only hypothesis is 3.3 (3.9) standard deviations, and the measured cross-section is sigma = 8.2(-2.9)(+3.5) pb, consistent with the Standard Model prediction of sigma(SM) = 10.32(-0.36)(+0.40) pb.

Title Search for pair-produced scalar and vector leptoquarks decaying into third-generation quarks and first- or second-generation leptons in pp collisions with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year (down) 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.

  Keywords Exotics; Hadron-Hadron Scattering
Abstract A search for pair-produced scalar and vector leptoquarks decaying into quarks and leptons of different generations is presented. It uses the full LHC Run 2 (2015-2018) data set of 139 fb(-1) collected with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 13TeV. Scalar leptoquarks with charge -(1/3) e as well as scalar and vector leptoquarks with charge +(2/3) e are considered. All possible decays of the pair-produced leptoquarks into quarks of the third generation ( t, b) and charged or neutral leptons of the first or second generation ( e, mu, nu) with exactly one electron or muon in the final state are investigated. No significant deviations from the Standard Model expectation are observed. Upper limits on the production cross-section are provided for eight models as a function of the leptoquark mass and the branching ratio of the leptoquark into the charged or neutral lepton. In addition, lower limits on the leptoquark masses are derived for all models across a range of branching ratios. Two of these models have the goal of providing an explanation for the recent B-anomalies. In both models, a vector leptoquark decays into charged and neutral leptons of the second generation with a similar branching fraction. Lower limits of 1980 GeV and 1710 GeV are set on the leptoquark mass for these two models.

Title Measurement of the t(t)over-bar production cross-section in pp collisions at root s=5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article

Abstract The inclusive top-quark pair ( t (t) over bar) production cross-section sigma(t (t) over bar) is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy root s = 5.02TeV, using 257 pb(-1) of data collected in 2017 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The t (t) over bar cross-section is measured in both the dilepton and single-lepton final states of the t<overline> t system and then combined. The combination of the two measurements yields sigma(t (t) over bar) = 67.5 +/- 0.9 (stat.) +/- 2.3 (syst.) +/- 1.1 (lumi.) +/- 0.2 (beam) pb, where the four uncertainties reflect the limited size of the data sample, experimental and theoretical systematic effects, and imperfect knowledge of both the integrated luminosity and the LHC beam energy, giving a total uncertainty of 3.9%. The result is in agreement with theoretical quantum chromodynamic calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant, including the resummation of next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic soft-gluon terms, and constrains the parton distribution functions of the proton at large Bjorken-x.

Title Search for flavour-changing neutral current interactions of the top quark and the Higgs boson in events with a pair of tau-leptons in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year (down) 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.

Abstract A search for flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) tqH interactions involving a top quark, another up-type quark (q = u, c), and a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson decaying into a tau-lepton pair (H -> tau(+)tau(-)) is presented. The search is based on a dataset of pp collisions at root s = 13 TeV that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Two processes are considered: single top quark FCNC production in association with a Higgs boson (pp -> tH), and top quark pair production in which one of top quarks decays into Wb and the other decays into qH through the FCNC interactions. The search selects events with two hadronically decaying tau-lepton candidates (tau(had)) or at least one tau(had) with an additional lepton (e, mu), as well as multiple jets. Event kinematics is used to separate signal from the background through a multivariate discriminant. A slight excess of data is observed with a significance of 2.3 sigma above the expected SM background, and 95% CL upper limits on the t -> qH branching ratios are derived. The observed (expected) 95% CL upper limits set on the t -> cH and t -> uH branching ratios are 9.4x10(-4)(4.8(-1.4)(+2.2) x 10(-4)) and 6.9x10(-4) (3.5(-1.0)(+1.5) x10(-4)), respectively. The corresponding combined observed (expected) upper limits on the dimension-6 operator Wilson coefficients in the effective tqH couplings are C-c phi < 1.35 (0.97) and C-u phi < 1.16 (0.82).

Title Measurement of electroweak Z(v (v)over-bar)gamma jj production and limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year (down) 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 06 Issue 6 Pages 082 - 48pp
  Keywords Electroweak Interaction; Hadron-Hadron Scattering
Abstract The electroweak production of Z(v (v) over bar)gamma in association with two jets is studied in a regime with a photon of high transverse momentum above 150 GeV using proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis uses a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) collected by the ATLAS detector during the 2015-2018 LHC data-taking period. This process is an important probe of the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism in the Standard Model and is sensitive to quartic gauge boson couplings via vector-boson scattering. The fiducial Z( v (v) over bar)gamma jj cross section for electroweak production is measured to be 0.77(-0.30)(+0.34) fb and is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. Evidence of electroweak Z( v (v) over bar)gamma jj production is found with an observed significance of 3.2 sigma for the background-only hypothesis, compared with an expected significance of 3.7 sigma. The combination of this result with the previously published ATLAS observation of electroweak Z(v (v) over bar)gamma jj production yields an observed (expected) signal significance of 6.3 sigma (6.6 sigma). Limits on anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings are obtained in the framework of effective field theory with dimension-8 operators.
