Title Linear analysis of the gravitational beam-plasma instability Type Journal Article

Abstract We investigate the well-known phenomenon of the beam-plasma instability in the gravitational sector when a fast population of particles interacts with the massive scalar mode of a Horndeski theory of gravity, resulting in linear growth of the latter amplitude. Following the approach used in the standard electromagnetic case, we start from the dielectric representation of the gravitational plasma, as introduced in a previous analysis of the Landau damping for the scalar Horndeski mode. We then set up the modified Vlasov-Einstein equation, using a Dirac delta function to describe the fast beam distribution. We thus provide an analytical expression for the dispersion relation, and we demonstrate the existence of a nonzero growth rate for the linear evolution of the Horndeski scalar mode. A numerical investigation is then performed with a trapezoidal beam distribution function, which confirms the analytical results and allows us to demonstrate how the growth rate decreases as the beam spread increases.

Title Precision CMB constraints on eV-scale bosons coupled to neutrinos Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication European Physical Journal C Abbreviated Journal Eur. Phys. J. C
  Volume (down) 83 Issue 8 Pages 709 - 12pp

Abstract The cosmic microwave background (CMB) has proven to be an invaluable tool for studying the properties and interactions of neutrinos, providing insight not only into the sum of neutrino masses but also the free streaming nature of neutrinos prior to recombination. The CMB is a particularly powerful probe of new eV-scale bosons interacting with neutrinos, as these particles can thermalizewith neutrinos via the inverse decay process, v (v) over bar -> X, and suppress neutrino free streaming near recombination – even for couplings as small as lambda(v) similar to O(10(-13)). Here, we revisit CMB constraints on such bosons, improving upon a number of approximations previously adopted in the literature and generalizing the constraints to a broader class of models. This includes scenarios in which the boson is either spin-0 or spin-1, the number of interacting neutrinos is either N-int = 1, 2 or 3, and the case in which a primordial abundance of the species is present. We apply these bounds to well-motivatedmodels, such as the singlet majoron model or a light U(1) L-mu- L-t gauge boson, and find that they represent the leading constraints for masses m(X) similar to 1 eV. Finally, we revisit the extent to which neutrinophilic bosons can ameliorate the Hubble tension, and find that recent improvements in the understanding of how such bosons damp neutrino free streaming reduces the previously found success of this proposal.

Title nu Electroweak baryogenesis: the scalar singlet strikes back Type Journal Article

Abstract We perform a comprehensive scan of the parameter space of a general singlet scalar extension of the Standard Model to identify the regions which can lead to a strong first-order phase transition, as required by the electroweak baryogenesis mechanism. We find that taking into account bubble nucleation is a fundamental constraint on the parameter space and present a conservative and fast estimate for it so as to enable efficient parameter space scanning. The allowed regions turn out to be already significantly probed by constraints on the scalar mixing from Higgs signal strength measurements. We also consider the addition of new neutrino singlet fields with Yukawa couplings to both scalars and forming heavy (pseudo)-Dirac pairs, as in the linear or inverse Seesaw mechanisms for neutrino mass generation. We find that their inclusion does not alter the allowed parameter space from early universe phenomenology in a significant way. Conversely, there are allowed regions of the parameter space where the presence of the neutrino singlets would remarkably modify the collider phenomenology, yielding interesting new signatures in Higgs and singlet scalar decays.

Title First observation of the cosmic ray shadow of the Moon and the Sun with KM3NeT/ORCA Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication European Physical Journal C Abbreviated Journal Eur. Phys. J. C

Abstract This article reports the first observation of the Moon and the Sun shadows in the sky distribution of cosmicray induced muons measured by the KM3NeT/ORCA detector. The analysed data-taking period spans from February 2020 to November 2021, when the detector had 6 Detection Units deployed at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, each composed of 18 Digital Optical Modules. The shadows induced by theMoon and the Sun were detected at their nominal position with a statistical significance of 4.2 sigma and 6.2 sigma, and an angular resolution of sigma(res) = 0.49 degrees and sigma(res) = 0.66 degrees, respectively, consistent with the prediction of 0.53 degrees from simulations. This early result confirms the effectiveness of the detector calibration, in time, position and orientation and the accuracy of the event direction reconstruction. This also demonstrates the performance and the competitiveness of the detector in terms of pointing accuracy and angular resolution.

Title Measurement of the nuclear modification factor of b-jets in 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb collisions with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication European Physical Journal C Abbreviated Journal Eur. Phys. J. C
  Volume (down) 83 Issue 5 Pages 438 - 32pp
  Keywords
Abstract This paper presents a measurement of b-jet production in Pb+Pb and pp collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurement uses 260 pb(-1) of pp collisions collected in 2017 and 1.4 nb(-1) of Pb+Pb collisions collected in 2018. In both collision systems, jets are reconstructed via the anti-kt algorithm. The b-jets are identified from a sample of jets containing muons from the semileptonic decay of b-quarks using template fits of the muon momentum relative to the jet axis. In pp collisions, b-jets are reconstructed for radius parameters R=0.2 and R=0.4, and only R=0.2 jets are used in Pb+Pb collisions. For comparison, inclusive R=0.2 jets are also measured using 1.7 nb(-1) of Pb+Pb collisions collected in 2018 and the same pp collision data as the b-jet measurement. The nuclear modification factor, RAA, is calculated for both b-jets and inclusive jets with R=0.2 over the transverse momentum range of 80-290 GeV. The nuclear modification factor for b-jets decreases from peripheral to central collisions. The ratio of the b-jet RAA to inclusive jet RAA is also presented and suggests that the RAA for b-jets is larger than that for inclusive jets in central Pb+Pb collisions. The measurements are compared with theoretical calculations and suggest a role for mass and colour-charge effects in partonic energy loss in heavy-ion collisions.
