Title Observation of the decay Lambda(0)(b) -> pK(-)mu(+)mu(-) and a search for CP violation Type Journal Article
Year 2017 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume (up) 06 Issue 6 Pages 108 - 17pp
Keywords B physics; CP violation; FCNC Interaction; Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments)
Abstract A search for CP violation in the decay Lambda(0)(b) -> pK(-)mu(+)mu(-) is presented. This decay is mediated by flavour-changing neutral-current transitions in the Standard Model and is potentially sensitive to new sources of CP violation. The study is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions recorded with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1). The Lambda(0)(b) -> pK(-)mu(+)mu(-) decay is observed for the first time, and two observables that are sensitive to different manifestations of CP violation are measured, Delta A(CP) equivalent to A(CP) (Lambda(0)(b) -> pK(-)mu(+)mu(-)) – A(CP) (Lambda(0)(b) -> pK(-)J/psi) and a(CP)((T) over cap -odd), where the latter is based on asymmetries in the angle between the mu(+)mu(-) and pK(-) decay planes. These are measured to be Delta A(CP) = (-3.5 +/- 5.0 (stat) +/- 0.2 (syst)) x 10(-2), a(CP)((T) over cap -odd) = (1.2 +/- 5.0 (stat) +/- 0.7 (syst)) x 10(-2), and no evidence for CP violation is found.

Title The seesaw portal in testable models of neutrino masses Type Journal Article
Year 2017 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume (up) 06 Issue 6 Pages 112 - 20pp
Keywords Beyond Standard Model; Neutrino Physics
Abstract A Standard Model extension with two Majorana neutrinos can explain the measured neutrino masses and mixings, and also account for the matter-antimatter asymmetry in a region of parameter space that could be testable in future experiments. The testability of the model relies to some extent on its minimality. In this paper we address the possibility that the model might be extended by extra generic new physics which we parametrize in terms of a low-energy effective theory. We consider the effects of the operators of the lowest dimensionality, d = 5, and evaluate the upper bounds on the coefficients so that the predictions of the minimal model are robust. One of the operators gives a new production mechanism for the heavy neutrinos at LHC via higgs decays. The higgs can decay to a pair of such neutrinos that, being long-lived, leave a powerful signal of two displaced vertices. We estimate the LHC reach to this process.

Title Proton decay and light sterile neutrinos Type Journal Article

Abstract Within the standard model, non-renormalizable operators at dimension six (d = 6) violate baryon and lepton number by one unit and thus lead to proton decay. Here, we point out that the proton decay mode with a charged pion and missing energy can be a characteristic signature of d = 6 operators containing a light sterile neutrino, if it is not accompanied by the standard pi(0)e(+) final state. We discuss this effect first at the level of effective operators and then provide a concrete model with new physics at the TeV scale, in which the lightness of the active neutrinos and the stability of the proton are related.

Title A fresh look into the interacting dark matter scenario Type Journal Article

Abstract The elastic scattering between dark matter particles and radiation represents an attractive possibility to solve a number of discrepancies between observations and standard cold dark matter predictions, as the induced collisional damping would imply a suppression of small-scale structures. We consider this scenario and confront it with measurements of the ionization history of the Universe at several redshifts and with recent estimates of the counts of Milky Way satellite galaxies. We derive a conservative upper bound on the dark matter photon elastic scattering cross section of sigma gamma DM < 8 x 10(-10) sigma(T) (m(DM)/GeV) at 95% CL, about one order of magnitude tighter than previous constraints from satellite number counts. Due to the strong degeneracies with astrophysical parameters, the bound on the dark matter-photon scattering cross section derived here is driven by the estimate of the number of Milky Way satellite galaxies. Finally, we also argue that future 21 cm probes could help in disentangling among possible non-cold dark matter candidates, such as interacting and warm dark matter scenarios. Let us emphasize that bounds of similar magnitude to the ones obtained here could be also derived for models with dark matter-neutrino interactions and would be as constraining as the tightest limits on such scenarios.

Title Measurement of CP violation in B-0 -> D-/+pi(+/-) decays Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume (up) 06 Issue 6 Pages 084 - 23pp
Keywords B physics; CKM angle gamma; CP violation; Flavor physics; Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments)
Abstract A measurement of the CP asymmetries S-f and S-(f) over bar in B-0 -> D--/+pi(+/-) decays is reported. The decays are reconstructed in a dataset collected with the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1). The CP asymmetries are measured to be S-f = 0.058 +/- 0.020(stat) +/- 0.011(syst) and S-(f) over bar = 0.038 +/- 0.020(stat) +/- 0.007(syst). These results are in agreement with, and more precise than, previous determinations. They are used to constrain angles of the unitarity triangle, vertical bar sin (2 beta + gamma)vertical bar and gamma, to intervals that are consistent with the current world-average values.
