Title Updated search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decay D-0 -> mu(+)mu(-) in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 82 Issue 9 Pages 091105 - 8pp
  Keywords
Abstract We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral-current decay D-0 -> mu(+)mu(-) in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using 360 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A displaced vertex trigger selects long-lived D-0 candidates in the mu(+)mu(-), pi(+)pi(-), and K-pi(+) decay modes. We use the Cabibbo-favored D-0 -> K-pi(+) channel to optimize the selection criteria in an unbiased manner, and the kinematically similar D-0 -> pi(+)pi(-) channel for normalization. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction B(D-0 -> mu(+)mu(-)) < 2.1 X 10(-7) (3.0 X 10(-7)) at the 90% (95%) confidence level.

Abstract We use a theoretical model of the gamma d --> K+K- np reaction adapted to the experiment done at LEPS where a peak was observed and associated with the Theta(+)(1540) pentaquark. The study shows that the method used in the experiment to assign momenta to the undetected proton and neutron, together with the chosen cuts, necessarily creates an artificial broad peak in the assumed K(+)n invariant mass in the region of the claimed Theta(+)(1540), such that the remaining strength seen for the experimental peak is compatible with a fluctuation of 2 sigma significance.

Title Measurement of the WW plus WZ production cross section using a matrix element technique in lepton plus jets events Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 82 Issue 11 Pages 112001 - 15pp
  Keywords
Abstract We present a measurement of the WW + WZ production cross section observed in a final state consisting of an identified electron or muon, two jets, and missing transverse energy. The measurement is carried out in a data sample corresponding to up to 4.6 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity at root s = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector. Matrix element calculations are used to separate the diboson signal from the large backgrounds. The WW + WZ cross section is measured to be 17.4 +/- 3.3 pb in agreement with standard model predictions. A fit to the dijet invariant mass spectrum yields a compatible cross section measurement.

Title Measurement of the absolute branching fractions for D-s(-) -> l(-) (nu)over-bar(l) and extraction of the decay constant f(Ds) Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 82 Issue 9 Pages 091103 - 8pp
  Keywords
Abstract The absolute branching fractions for the decays D-s(-) -> l(-) (nu) over bar (l) (l = e, mu, or tau) are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 521 fb(-1) collected at center-of-mass energies near 10.58 GeV with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e(+)e(-) collider at SLAC. The number of D-s(-) mesons is determined by reconstructing the recoiling system DKX gamma in events of the type e(+)e(-) -> DKXDs*(-), where D-s*(-) -> D-s(-) gamma and X represents additional pions from fragmentation. The D-s(-) -> l(-) nu(l) events are detected by full or partial reconstruction of the recoiling system DKX gamma l. The branching fraction measurements are combined to determine the D-s(-) decay constant f(Ds) (258.6 +/- 6.4 +/- 7:5) MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Title Direct Top-Quark Width Measurement at CDF Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 105 Issue 23 Pages 232003 - 7pp
  Keywords
Abstract We present a measurement of the top-quark width in the lepton + jets decay channel of t (t) over bar events produced in p (p) over bar collisions at Fermilab's Tevatron collider and collected by the CDF II detector. From a data sample corresponding to 4.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, we identify 756 candidate events. The top-quark mass and the mass of the hadronically decaying W boson that comes from the top-quark decay are reconstructed for each event and compared with templates of different top-quark widths (Gamma(t)) and deviations from nominal jet energy scale (Delta(JES)) to perform a simultaneous fit for both parameters, where Delta(JES) is used for the in situ calibration of the jet energy scale. By applying a Feldman-Cousins approach, we establish an upper limit at 95% confidence level (CL) of Gamma(t) < 7.6 GeV and a two-sided 68% CL interval of 0.3 GeV < Gamma(t) < 4.4 GeV for a top-quark mass of 172.5 GeV/c(2), which are consistent with the standard model prediction.

Title Search for New Particles in Two-Jet Final States in 7 TeV Proton-Proton Collisions with the ATLAS Detector at the LHC Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 105 Issue 16 Pages 161801 - 19pp
  Keywords
Abstract A search for new heavy particles manifested as resonances in two-jet final states is presented. The data were produced in 7 TeV proton-proton collisions by the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 315 nb(-1) collected by the ATLAS detector. No resonances were observed. Upper limits were set on the product of cross section and signal acceptance for excited-quark (q*) production as a function of q* mass. These exclude at the 95% C. L. the q* mass interval 0: 30< m(q)*< 1:26 TeV, extending the reach of previous experiments.

Title Semiclassical gravity in the far field limit of stars, black holes, and wormholes Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 82 Issue 12 Pages 124070 - 24pp

Abstract Semiclassical gravity is investigated in a large class of asymptotically flat, static, spherically symmetric spacetimes including those containing static stars, black holes, and wormholes. Specifically the stress-energy tensors of massless free spin 0 and spin 1/2 fields are computed to leading order in the asymptotic regions of these spacetimes. This is done for spin 0 fields in Schwarzschild spacetime using a WKB approximation. It is done numerically for the spin 1/2 field in Schwarzschild, extreme Reissner-Nordstrom, and various wormhole spacetimes. And it is done by finding analytic solutions to the leading order mode equations in a large class of asymptotically flat static spherically symmetric spacetimes. Agreement is shown between these various computational methods. It is found that, for all of the spacetimes considered, the energy density and pressure in the asymptotic region are proportional to r(-5) to leading order. Furthermore, for the spin 1/2 field and the conformally coupled scalar field, the stress-energy tensor depends only on the leading order geometry in the far field limit. This is also true for the minimally coupled scalar field for spacetimes containing either a static star or a black hole, but not for spacetimes containing a wormhole.

Abstract We calculate the scattering lengths of Nambu-Goldstone bosons interacting with D mesons in a covariant formulation of chiral perturbation theory, which satisfies heavy-quark spin symmetry and analytical properties of loop amplitudes. We compare our results with previous studies performed using heavy-meson chiral perturbation theory and show that recoil corrections are sizable in most cases.

Title Readiness of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter for LHC collisions Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication European Physical Journal C Abbreviated Journal Eur. Phys. J. C
  Volume 70 Issue 4 Pages 1193-1236
  Keywords
Abstract The Tile hadronic calorimeter of the ATLAS detector has undergone extensive testing in the experimental hall since its installation in late 2005. The readout, control and calibration systems have been fully operational since 2007 and the detector has successfully collected data from the LHC single beams in 2008 and first collisions in 2009. This paper gives an overview of the Tile Calorimeter performance as measured using random triggers, calibration data, data from cosmic ray muons and single beam data. The detector operation status, noise characteristics and performance of the calibration systems are presented, as well as the validation of the timing and energy calibration carried out with minimum ionising cosmic ray muons data. The calibration systems' precision is well below the design value of 1%. The determination of the global energy scale was performed with an uncertainty of 4%.

Title Diffractive W and Z production at the Fermilab Tevatron Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 82 Issue 11 Pages 112004 - 10pp

Abstract We report on a measurement of the fraction of events with a W or Z boson which are produced diffractively in (p) over barp collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV, using data from 0.6 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the CDF II detector equipped with a Roman- pot spectrometer that detects the (p) over bar from (p) over bar + p -> (p) over bar + [X + W/Z]. We find that (1.00 +/- 0.11)% of Ws and (0.88 +/- 0.22)% of Zs are produced diffractively in a region of antiproton or proton fractional momentum loss xi of 0.03 < xi < 0.10 and 4-momentum transferred squared t of -1 < t < 0 (GeV/c)(2), where we account for the events in which the proton scatters diffractively while the antiproton dissociates, (p) over bar + p -> [X + W/Z] + p, by doubling the measured proton dissociation fraction. We also report on searches for W and Z production in double Pomeron exchange, (p) over bar + p -> [X + W/Z] + p, and on exclusive Z production, (p) over bar + p -> (p) over bar + Z + p. No signal is seen above background for these processes, and comparisons are made with expectations.
