Title Coarse graining of NN inelastic interactions up to 3 GeV: Repulsive versus structural core Type Journal Article
Year 2017 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 96 Issue 1 Pages 014004 - 14pp
Keywords
Abstract The repulsive short-distance core is one of the main paradigms of nuclear physics which even seems confirmed by QCD lattice calculations. On the other hand nuclear potentials at short distances are motivated by high energy behavior where inelasticities play an important role. We analyze NN interactions up to 3 GeV in terms of simple coarse grained complex and energy dependent interactions. We discuss two possible and conflicting scenarios which share the common feature of a vanishing wave function at the core location in the particular case of S waves. We find that the optical potential with a repulsive core exhibits a strong energy dependence whereas the optical potential with the structural core is characterized by a rather adiabatic energy dependence which allows one to treat inelasticity perturbatively. We discuss the possible implications for nuclear structure calculations of both alternatives.

Title Muon capture on light isotopes measured with the Double Chooz detector Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 93 Issue 5 Pages 054608 - 18pp
Keywords
Abstract Using the Double Chooz detector, designed to measure the neutrino mixing angle theta(13), the products of mu(-) capture on C-12, C-13, N-14, and O-16 have been measured. Over a period of 489.5 days, 2.3 x 10(6) stopping cosmic mu(-) have been collected, of which 1.8 x 10(5) captured on carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen nuclei in the inner detector scintillator or acrylic vessels. The resulting isotopes were tagged using prompt neutron emission (when applicable), the subsequent beta decays, and, in some cases, beta-delayed neutrons. The most precise measurement of the rate of C-12(mu(-), nu)B-12 to date is reported: 6.57(-0.21)(+0.11) x 10(3) s(-1), or (17.35(-0.59)(+0.35))% of nuclear captures. By tagging excited states emitting gamma s, the ground state transition rate to B-12 has been determined to be 5.68(-0.23)(+0.14) x 10(3) s(-1). The heretofore unobserved reactions C-12(mu(-), nu alpha)Li-8, C-13(mu(-), nu n alpha)Li-8, and C-13(mu(-), nu n)B-12 are measured. Further, a population of beta n decays following stopping muons is identified with 5.5 sigma significance. Statistics limit our ability to identify these decays definitively. Assuming negligible production of He-8, the reaction C-13(mu(-), nu alpha)Li-9 is found to be present at the 2.7 sigma level. Limits are set on a variety of other processes.

Title (K)over-bar-induced formation of the f(0)(980) and a(0)(980) resonances on proton targets Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 93 Issue 3 Pages 035206 - 8pp
Keywords
Abstract We perform a calculation of the cross section for nine reactions induced by (K) over bar scattering on protons. The reactions studied are K- p -> Lambda pi(+)pi(-), K- p -> Sigma(0)pi(+)pi(-), K- p -> Lambda pi(0)eta, K- p -> Sigma(0)pi(0)eta, K- p -> Sigma(+)pi(-)eta, (K) over bar (0) p -> Lambda pi(+)eta, (K) over bar (0) p -> Sigma(0)pi(+)eta, (K) over bar (0) p -> Sigma(+)pi(+)pi(-), and (K) over bar (0) p -> Sigma+pi(0)eta. We find that in the reactions producing pi(+)pi(-), a clear peak for the f(0)(980) resonance is found, while no trace of f(0)(500) appears. Similarly, in the cases of p. production, a strong peak is found for the a(0)(980) resonance, with the characteristic strong cusp shape. Cross sections and invariant mass distributions are evaluated which should serve, by comparing them with future data, to test the dynamics of the chiral unitary approach used for the evaluations and the nature of these resonances.

Title Centrality, rapidity, and transverse momentum dependence of isolated prompt photon production in lead-lead collisions at root S-NN=2.76 TeV measured with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 93 Issue 3 Pages 034914 - 28pp
Keywords
Abstract Prompt photon production in root S-NN = 2.76-TeV Pb + Pb collisions has been measured by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data collected in 2011 with an integrated luminosity of 0.14 nb(-1). Inclusive photon yields, scaled by the mean nuclear thickness function, are presented as a function of collision centrality and transverse momentum in two pseudorapidity intervals, vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.37 and 1.52 <= vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.37. The scaled yields in the two pseudorapidity intervals, as well as the ratios of the forward yields to those at midrapidity, are compared to the expectations from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations. The measured cross sections agree well with the predictions for proton-proton collisions within statistical and systematic uncertainties. Both the yields and the ratios are also compared to two other pQCD calculations, one which uses the isospin content appropriate to colliding lead nuclei and another which includes nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distribution functions.

Title Spectroscopy of neutron-rich Dy-168,Dy-170: Yrast band evolution close to the NpNn valence maximum Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 81 Issue 3 Pages 034310 - 5pp
Keywords
Abstract The yrast sequence of the neutron-rich dysprosium isotope Dy-168 has been studied using multinucleon transfer reactions following collisions between a 460-MeV Se-82 beam and an Er-170 target. The reaction products were identified using the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer and the gamma rays detected using the CLARA HPGe-detector array. The 2(+) and 4(+) members of the previously measured ground-state rotational band of Dy-168 have been confirmed and the yrast band extended up to 10(+). A tentative candidate for the 4(+) -> 2(+) transition in Dy-170 was also identified. The data on these nuclei and on the lighter even-even dysprosium isotopes are interpreted in terms of total Routhian surface calculations and the evolution of collectivity in the vicinity of the proton-neutron valence product maximum is discussed.

Title Measurement of the C-12(n, p)B-12 cross section at n_TOF at CERN by in-beam activation analysis Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 90 Issue 2 Pages 021601 - 5pp
Keywords
Abstract The integral cross section of the C-12(n, p)B-12 reaction has been determined for the first time in the neutron energy range from threshold to several GeV at the n_TOF facility at CERN. The measurement relies on the activation technique with the beta decay of B-12 measured over a period of four half-lives within the same neutron bunch in which the reaction occurs. The results indicate that model predictions, used in a variety of applications, are mostly inadequate. The value of the integral cross section reported here can be used as a benchmark for verifying or tuning model calculations.

Title Role of the Delta*(1940) in the pi(+) p -> K+ Sigma(+)(1385) and pp -> nK(+) Sigma(+)(1385) reactions Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 90 Issue 2 Pages 025207 - 11pp
Keywords
Abstract The pp -> nK(+)Sigma(+)(1385) reaction is a very good isospin 3/2 filter for studying Delta(++)* resonance decaying to K+Sigma(+)(1385). Within the effective Lagrangian method, we investigate the Sigma (1385) (spin parity J(P) = 3/2(+)) hadronic production in the pi(+) p -> K+Sigma(+)(1385) and pp -> nK(+)Sigma(+)(1385) reactions. For the pi(+) p -> K+Sigma(+)(1385) reaction, in addition to the “background” contributions from t-channel K*(0) exchange and u-channel Lambda(1115) and Sigma(0)(1193) exchange, we also consider the contribution from the s-channel Delta*(1940) resonance, which has significant coupling to the K Sigma(1385) channel. We show that the inclusion of the Delta*(1940) resonance leads to a fairly good description of the low-energy experimental total cross section data of pi(+)p -> K+Sigma(+)(1385) reaction. Basing on the study of the pi(+)p -> K+Sigma(+)(1385) reaction and with the assumption that the excitation of Delta*(1940) resonance dominates the pp -> nK(+)Sigma(+)(1385) reaction, we calculate the total and differential cross sections of the pp -> nK(+)Sigma(+)(1385) reaction. It is shown that the new experimental data support the important role played by the Delta*(1940) resonance with a mass in the region of 1940 MeV and a width of around 200 MeV. We also demonstrate that the invariant mass distribution and the Dalitz plot provide direct information of the Sigma(+)(1385) production, which can be tested by future experiments.

Title Composite nature of the Lambda (1520) resonance Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 90 Issue 2 Pages 025208 - 8pp
Keywords
Abstract Recently, the Weinberg compositeness condition of a bound state was generalized to account for resonant states and higher partial waves. We apply this extension to the case of the Lambda (1520) resonance and quantify the weight of the meson-baryon components in contrast to other possible genuine building blocks. This resonance was theoretically obtained from a coupled channels analysis using the s-wave pi Sigma* and K Xi* and the d-wave (K) over bar N and pi Sigma channels, applying the techniques of the chiral unitary approach. We obtain the result that this resonance is essentially dynamically generated from these meson-baryon channels, leaving room for only 15% weight of other kinds of components in its wave function.

Title Ni-62(n,gamma) and Ni-63(n,gamma) cross sections measured at the n_TOF facility at CERN Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 89 Issue 2 Pages 025810 - 11pp

Abstract The cross section of the Ni-62(n,gamma) reaction was measured with the time-of-flight technique at the neutron time-of-flight facility nTOF at CERN. Capture kernels of 42 resonances were analyzed up to 200 keV neutron energy and Maxwellian averaged cross sections (MACS) from kT = 5-100 keV were calculated. With a total uncertainty of 4.5%, the stellar cross section is in excellent agreement with the the KADoNiS compilation at kT = 30 keV, while being systematically lower up to a factor of 1.6 at higher stellar temperatures. The cross section of the Ni-63(n,gamma) reaction was measured for the first time at nTOF. We determined unresolved cross sections from 10 to 270 keV with a systematic uncertainty of 17%. These results provide fundamental constraints on s-process production of heavier species, especially the production of Cu in massive stars, which serve as the dominant source of Cu in the solar system.

Title Gamow-Teller response in deformed even and odd neutron-rich Zr and Mo isotopes Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
Volume 89 Issue 3 Pages 034311 - 13pp
Keywords
Abstract beta-decay properties of neutron-rich Zr and Mo isotopes are investigated within a microscopic theoretical approach based on the proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation. The underlying mean field is described self-consistently from deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculations with pairing correlations. Residual separable particle-hole and particle-particle forces are also included in the formalism. The structural evolution in these isotopic chains including both even and odd isotopes is analyzed in terms of the equilibrium deformed shapes. Gamow-Teller strength distributions, beta-decay half-lives, and beta-delayed neutron-emission probabilities are studied, stressing their relevance to describe the path of the nucleosynthesis rapid neutron capture process.
