Abstract: Cosmological bounds on neutrinos and additional hypothetical light thermal relics, such as QCD axions, are currently among the most restrictive ones. These limits mainly rely on cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropies. Nonetheless, one of the largest cosmological signatures of thermal relics is that on gravitational lensing, due to their free-streaming behavior before their nonrelativistic period. We investigate late-time only hot-relic mass constraints, primarily based on recently released lensing data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, both alone and in combination with lensing data from the Planck satellite. Additionally, we consider other local probes, such as baryon acoustic oscillations measurements, shear-shear, galaxy-galaxy, and galaxy-shear correlation functions from the dark energy survey, and distance moduli measurements from Type-Ia Supernovae. The tightest bounds we find are Sigma m(v) < 0.43 eV and m(a) < 1.1 eV, both at 95% CL Interestingly, these limits are still much stronger than those found on e.g., laboratory neutrino mass searches, reassessing the robustness of the extraction of thermal relic properties via cosmological observations. In addition, when considering lensing-only data, the significance of the Hubble constant tension is considerably reduced, while the clustering parameter sigma 8 controversy is completely absent.

Abstract: Leptoquarks are theorized particles of either scalar or vector nature that couple simultaneously to quarks and leptons. Motivated by recent measurements of coherent elastic neutrino -nucleus scattering, we consider the impact of scalar leptoquarks coupling to neutrinos on a few complementary processes, from low energy to colliders. In particular, we set competitive constraints on the typical mass and coupling of scalar leptoquarks by analyzing recent COHERENT data. We compare these constraints with bounds from atomic parity violation experiments, deep inelastic neutrino -nucleon scattering and collider data. Our results highlight a strong complementarity between different facilities and demonstrate the power of coherent elastic neutrino -nucleus scattering experiments to probe leptoquark masses in the sub-TeV range. Finally, we also present prospects for improving current bounds with future upgrades of the COHERENT detectors and the planned European Spallation Source.

Abstract: The decay E-b -> A0bx-- is observed using a proton-proton collision data sample collected at center-of-ffiffimass energy p s 1/4 13 TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb-1. This process is mediated by the s -> uu over bar d quark-level transition, where the b quark in the E-b baryon is a spectator in the decay. Averaging the results obtained using the two A0b decay modes, A0b -> A thorn c x-- and A0b -> A thorn c x--x- thorn x--, the relative production ratio is measured to be ofE-b =fA0b thorn BoE-b -> A0bx-- thorn 1/4 o7.3 ⠂ 0.8 ⠂ 0.6 thorn x 10-4. Here the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and fE-bofA0b thorn is the fragmentation fraction for a b quark into a E-b (A0b) baryon. Using an independent measurement of fE-b =fA0b, the branching fraction BoE-b -> A0bx-- thorn 1/4 o0.89 ⠂ 0.10 ⠂ 0.07 ⠂ 0.29 thorn % is obtained, where the last uncertainty is due to the assumed SU(3) flavor symmetry in the determination of fE-b =fA0b.

Abstract: The imaging by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) of the supermassive central objects at the heart of the M87 and Milky Way (Sgr A*) galaxies, has marked the first step into peering at the photon rings and central brightness depression that characterize the optical appearance of black holes surrounded by an accretion disk. Recently, Vagnozzi et al. [arXiv:2205.07787] used the claim by the EHT that the size of the shadow of Sgr A* can be inferred by calibrated measurements of the bright ring enclosing it, to constrain a large number of spherically symmetric space-time geometries. In this work we use this result to study some features of the first and second photon rings of a restricted pool of such geometries in thin accretion disk settings. The emission profile of the latter is described by calling upon three analytic samples belonging to the family introduced by Gralla, Lupsasca, and Marrone, in order to characterize such photon rings using the Lyapunov exponent of nearly bound orbits and discuss its correlation with the luminosity extinction rate between the first and second photon rings. We finally elaborate on the chances of using such photon rings as observational discriminators of alternative black hole geometries using very long baseline interferometry.

Abstract: We search for a B decay mode where one can find a peak for a DD bound state predicted in effective theories and in lattice QCD calculations, which has also been claimed from some reactions that show an accumulated strength in D D over bar production at threshold. We find a good candidate in the B+-> K+eta eta reaction, by looking at the eta eta mass distribution. The reaction proceeds via a first step in which one has the B+-> D*+ D-0 reaction followed by D*(+) (s) decay to (DK+)-K-0 and a posterior fusion of D-0 over bar D-0 to eta eta, implemented through a triangle diagram that allows the D-0 over bar D-0 to be virtual and to produce the bound state. The choice of eta eta to see the peak is based on results of calculations that find the eta eta among the light pseudoscalar channels with stronger coupling to the D D over bar bound state. We find a neat peak around the predicted mass of that state in the eta eta mass distribution, with an integrated branching ratio for B+-> K+ (D D, bound); (D D, bound) -> eta eta of the order of 1.5 x 10(-4), a large number for hadronic B decays, which should motivate its experimental search.

Abstract: We propose a dynamical scoto-seesaw mechanism using a gauged B – L symmetry. Dark matter is reconciled with neutrino mass generation, in such a way that the atmospheric scale arises a la seesaw, while the solar scale is scotogenic, arising radiatively from the exchange of “dark” states. This way we “explain” the solar-to-atmospheric scale ratio. The TeV-scale seesaw mediator and the two dark fermions carry different B – L charges. Dark matter stability follows from the residual matter parity that survives B – L breaking. Besides having collider tests, the model implies sizable charged lepton flavor violating (cLFV) phenomena, including Goldstone boson emission processes.

Abstract: We consider the local physics of an open quantum system embedded in an expanding three-dimensional space x, evolving in cosmological time t, weakly coupled to a massless quantum field. We derive the corresponding Markovian master equation for the system's nonunitary evolution and show that, for a de Sitter space with Hubble parameter h 1/4 const, the background fields act as a physical heat bath with temperature TdS 1/4 h/2z. The energy density of this bath obeys the Stefan-Boltzmann law pdS proportional to h4. We comment on how these results clarify the thermodynamics of de Sitter space and support previous arguments for its instability in the infrared. The cosmological implications are considered in an accompanying Letter.

Abstract: Models that produce axionlike particles (ALPs) after cosmological inflation due to spontaneous U(1) symmetry breaking also produce cosmic-string networks. Those axionic strings lose energy through gravitational-wave emission during the whole cosmological history, generating a stochastic background of gravitational waves that spans many decades in frequency. We can therefore constrain the axion decay constant and axion mass from limits on the gravitational-wave spectrum and compatibility with dark matter abundance as well as dark radiation. We derive such limits from analyzing the most recent NANOGrav data from pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). The limits are similar to the Neff bounds on dark radiation for ALP masses ma less than or similar to 10-22 eV. On the other hand, for heavy ALPs with ma greater than or similar to 0.1 GeV and NDW not equal 1, new regions of parameter space can be probed by PTA data due to the dominant domain-wall contribution to the gravitational-wave background.

Abstract: We develop a model aimed at understanding the three mass distributions of pairs of mesons in the Cabibbo-suppressed D-s(+) – K+pi(+)pi(-) decay recently measured with high statistics by the BESIII collaboration. The largest contributions to the process come from the D-s(+) -> K+ rho(0) and D-s(+) -> K*(0)pi(+) decay modes, but the D-s(+) -> K-0*(1430)pi(+) and D-s(+) -> K+ f(0) (1370) modes also play a moderate role and all of them are introduced empirically. Instead, the contribution of the f(0)(500), f(0)(980) , and K-0*(700) resonances is introduced dynamically by looking at the decay modes at the quark level, hadronizing q (q) over bar over bar pairs to give two mesons, and allowing these mesons to interact, for which we follow the chiral unitary approach, to finally produce the K+ pi(+) pi(-) final state. While the general features of the mass distributions are fairly obtained, we pay special attention to the specific effects created by the light scalar resonances, which are visible in the low mass region of the pi(+) pi(-) (f(0)(500) and K+ pi(-) K+pi-(K-0*(700)) mass distributions and a narrow peak for pi(+) pi(-) distribution corresponding to f(0)(980) excitation. The contribution of these three resonances is generated by only one parameter. We see the agreement found in these regions as further support for the nature of the light scalar states as dynamically generated from the interaction of pseudoscalar mesons.

Abstract: We study the molecular probability of the X(3872) in the D0 over bar D*0 and D+D*- channels in several scenarios. One of them assumes that the state is purely due to a genuine nonmolecular component. However, it gets unavoidably dressed by the meson components to the point that in the limit of zero binding of the D0 over bar D*0 component becomes purely molecular. Yet, the small but finite binding allows for a nonmolecular state when the bare mass of the genuine state approaches the D0 over bar D*0 threshold, but, in this case the system develops a small scattering length and a huge effective range for this channel in flagrant disagreement with present values of these magnitudes. Next we discuss the possibility to have hybrid states stemming from the combined effect of a genuine state and a reasonable direct interaction between the meson components, where we find cases in which the scattering length and effective range are still compatible with data, but even then the molecular probability is as big as 95%. Finally, we perform the calculations when the binding stems purely from the direct interaction between the meson-meson components. In summary we conclude, that while present data definitely rule out the possibility of a dominant nonmolecular component, the precise value of the molecular probability requires a more precise determination of the scattering length and effective range of the D0 over bar D*0 channel, as well as the measurement of these magnitudes for the D+D*- channel which have not been determined experimentally so far.
