Abstract: An angular analysis of the decay B (0) -> phi K (*)(892)(0) is reported based on a pp collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1), collected at a centre-of-mass energy of root S = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. The P-wave amplitudes and phases are measured with a greater precision than by previous experiments, and confirm about equal amounts of longitudinal and transverse polarization. The S-wave K+ pi(-) and K+ K- contributions are taken into account and found to be significant. A comparison of the B (0) -> phi K (*)(892)(0) and results shows no evidence for direct CP violation in the rate asymmetry, in the triple-product asymmetries or in the polarization amplitudes and phases.

Abstract: The T2K experiment has reported the first observation of the appearance of electron neutrinos in a muon neutrino beam. The main and irreducible background to the appearance signal comes from the presence in the neutrino beam of a small intrinsic component of electron neutrinos originating from muon and kaon decays. In T2K, this component is expected to represent 1.2% of the total neutrino flux. A measurement of this component using the near detector (ND280), located 280 m from the target, is presented. The charged current interactions of electron neutrinos are selected by combining the particle identification capabilities of both the time projection chambers and electromagnetic calorimeters of ND280. The measured ratio between the observed electron neutrino beam component and the prediction is 1.01 +/- 0.10 providing a direct confirmation of the neutrino fluxes and neutrino cross section modeling used for T2K neutrino oscillation analyses. Electron neutrinos coming from muons and kaons decay are also separately measured, resulting in a ratio with respect to the prediction of 0.68 +/- 0.30 and 1.10 +/- 0.14, respectively.

Abstract: New data from the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment produce the most precise measurement of the neutrino mixing parameter theta(23). Using an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV and a data set corresponding to 6.57 x 10(20) protons on target, T2K has fit the energy-dependent nu(mu) oscillation probability to determine oscillation parameters. The 68% confidence limit on sin(2)(theta(23)) is 0.514(-0.056)(+0.055) (0.511 +/- 0.055), assuming normal (inverted) mass hierarchy. The best-fit mass-squared splitting for normal hierarchy is Delta m(32)(2) = (2.51 +/- 0.10) x 10(-3) eV(2)/c(4) (inverted hierarchy: Delta m(13)(2) = (2.48 +/- 0.10) x 10(-3) eV(2)/c(4)). Adding a model of multinucleon interactions that affect neutrino energy reconstruction is found to produce only small biases in neutrino oscillation parameter extraction at current levels of statistical uncertainty.

Abstract: This Letter presents a study of the flavor-changing neutral current radiative B-+/- -> K-+/-pi(-/+)pi(+/-)gamma decays performed using data collected in proton-proton collisions with the LHCb detector at 7 and 8 TeV center-of-mass energies. In this sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1), nearly 14 000 signal events are reconstructed and selected, containing all possible intermediate resonances with a K-+/-pi(-/+)pi(+/-) final state in the [1.1, 1.9] GeV/c(2) mass range. The distribution of the angle of the photon direction with respect to the plane defined by the final-state hadrons in their rest frame is studied in intervals of K-+/-pi(-/+)pi(+/-) mass and the asymmetry between the number of signal events found on each side of the plane is obtained. The first direct observation of the photon polarization in the b -> s(gamma) transition is reported with a significance of 5.2 sigma.

Abstract: We explore the upper bound on the tensor-to-scalar ratio r in supersymmetric (F-term) hybrid inflation models with the gauge symmetry breaking scale set equal to the value 2.86 . 10(16) GeV, as dictated by the unification of the MSSM gauge couplings. We employ a unique renormalizable superpotential and a quasi-canonical Kahler potential, and the scalar spectral index n(s) is required to lie within the two-sigma interval from the central value found by the Planck satellite. In a sizable region of the parameter space the potential along the inflationary trajectory is a monotonically increasing function of the inflaton, and for this case, r less than or similar to 2.9.10(-4), while the spectral index running, vertical bar dn(s)/d ln k vertical bar, can be as large as 0.01. Ignoring higher order terms which ensure the boundedness of the potential for large values of the inflaton, the upper bound on r is significantly larger, of order 0.01, for subplanckian values of the inflaton, and vertical bar dn(s)/dlnk vertical bar similar or equal to 0.006.

Abstract: Structure of the decay B0s. J=.pp- is studied using data corresponding to 3 fb- 1 of integrated luminosity from pp collisions produced by the LHC and collected by the LHCb detector. Five interfering pp- states are required to describe the decay: F-0(980), F-0(1500), F-0(1790), F-2 (1270) and F-2(1525) An alternative model including these states and a nonresonant J=.pp- component also provides a good description of the data. Based on the different transversity components measured for the spin- 2 intermediate states, the final state is found to be compatible with being entirely CP odd. The CP- even part is found to be < 2.3% at a 95% confidence level. The f 0d500 state is not observed, allowing a limit to be set on the absolute value of the mixing angle with the f 0d980 of < 7.7 at a 90% confidence level, consistent with a tetraquark interpretation of the f(0)(980) substructure.

Abstract: The LHCb measurement of the lifetime ratio of the Lambda(0)(b) baryon to the (B) over bar (0) meson is updated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected using 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy pp collisions at the LHC. The decay modes used are Lambda(0)(b) -> J/psi pK(-) and (B) over bar (0) -> J/psi pi K-+(-), where the pi K-+(-) mass is consistent with that of the (K) over bar*(0)(892) meson. The lifetime ratio is determined with unprecedented precision to be 0.974 +/- 0.006 +/- 0.004, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with original theoretical predictions based on the heavy quark expansion. Using the current world average of the (B) over bar (0) lifetime, the Lambda(0)(b) lifetime is found to be 1.479 +/- 0.009 +/- 0.010 ps.

Abstract: A facility that can deliver beams of electron and muon neutrinos from the decay of a stored muon beam has the potential to unambiguously resolve the issue of the evidence for light sterile neutrinos that arises in short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments and from estimates of the effective number of neutrino flavors from fits to cosmological data. In this paper, we show that the nuSTORM facility, with stored muons of 3.8 GeV/c +/- 10%, will be able to carry out a conclusive muon neutrino appearance search for sterile neutrinos and test the LSND and MiniBooNE experimental signals with 10 sigma sensitivity, even assuming conservative estimates for the systematic uncertainties. This experiment would add greatly to our knowledge of the contribution of light sterile neutrinos to the number of effective neutrino flavors from the abundance of primordial helium production and from constraints on neutrino energy density from the cosmic microwave background. The appearance search is complemented by a simultaneous muon neutrino disappearance analysis that will facilitate tests of various sterile neutrino models.

Abstract: The formalism of linear response theory for a Skyrme functional including spin-orbit and tensor terms is generalized to the case of infinite nuclear matter with arbitrary isospin asymmetry. Response functions are obtained by solving an algebraic system of equations, which is explicitly given. Spin-isospin strength functions are analyzed varying the conditions of density, momentum transfer, asymmetry, and temperature. The presence of instabilities, including the spinodal one, is studied by means of the static susceptibility.

Abstract: A search is reported for a neutral Higgs boson in the decay channel H -> Z gamma, Z -> l(+)l(-) (l = e, mu), using 4.5 fb(-1) of pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV and 20.3 fb(-1) of pp collisions at root s = 8 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The observed distribution of the invariant mass of the three final-state particles, m(ll gamma), is consistent with the Standard Model hypothesis in the investigated mass range of 120-150 GeV. For a Higgs boson with a mass of 125.5 GeV, the observed upper limit at the 95% confidence level is 11 times the Standard Model expectation. Upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio of a neutral Higgs boson with mass in the range 120-150 GeV between 0.13 and 0.5 pb for root s = 8 TeV at 95% confidence level.
