Abstract |
Results of a search for new particles decaying into eight or more jets and moderate missing transverse momentum are presented. The analysis uses 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018. The selection rejects events containing isolated electrons or muons, and makes requirements according to the number of b-tagged jets and the scalar sum of masses of large-radius jets. The search extends previous analyses both in using a larger dataset and by employing improved jet and missing transverse momentum reconstruction methods which more cleanly separate signal from background processes. No evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model is found. The results are interpreted in the context of supersymmetry-inspired simplified models, significantly extending the limits on the gluino mass in those models. In particular, limits on the gluino mass are set at 2 TeV when the lightest neutralino is nearly massless in a model assuming a two-step cascade decay via the lightest chargino and second-lightest neutralino. |

Abstract |
This Letter presents a search for the production of new heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon using proton-proton collision data at root s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1). The analysis is performed by reconstructing hadronically decaying Higgs boson (H -> b (b) over bar) candidates as single large-radius jets. A novel algorithm using information about the jet constituents in the center-of-mass frame of the jet is implemented to identify the two b quarks in the single jet. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the production cross-section times branching fraction for narrow spin-1 resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon in the resonance mass range from 0.7 to 4 TeV, cross-section times branching fractions are excluded between 11.6 fb and 0.11 fb at a 95% confidence level. |

Abstract |
Pion electro- and photoproduction off the nucleon close to threshold is studied in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory at O(p(3)) in the extended-on-mass-shell scheme, with the explicit inclusion of the Delta(1232) resonance. The relevant low energy constants are fixed by fitting the available experimental data with the theoretical model. The inclusion of the Delta resonance as an explicit degree of freedom substantially improves the agreement with data and the convergence of the model. |

Abstract |
We determine the sensitivities of short-baseline coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE nu NS) experiments using a pion decay at rest neutrino source as a probe for nonunitarity in the lepton sector, as expected in low-scale type-I seesaw schemes. We also identify the best configuration for probing light sterile neutrinos at future ton-scale liquid argon CE nu NS experiments, estimating the projected sensitivities on the sterile neutrino parameters. Possible experimental setups at the Spallation Neutron Source, Lujan facility and the European Spallation Source are discussed. Provided that systematic uncertainties remain under control, we find that CE nu NS experiments will be competitive with oscillation measurements in the long run. |

Abstract |
The Fourier transform of the density-density correlation function in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) analog black hole is a useful tool to investigate correlations between the Hawking particles and their partners. It can be expressed in terms of <(out)(a) over cap (ext)(up) (out)(a) over cap (int)(up)> where (out)(a) over cap (ext)(up) is the annihilation operator for the Hawking particle and (out)(a) over cap (int)(up) is the corresponding one for the partner. This basic quantity is calculated for three different models for the BEC flow. It is shown that in each model the inclusion of the effective potential in the mode equations makes a significant difference. Furthermore, particle production induced by this effective potential in the interior of the black hole is studied for each model and shown to be nonthermal. An interesting peak that is related to the particle production and is present in some models is discussed. |
