Abstract: In this paper we propose several methods of constructing the system matrix (SM) of a Computed Tomography (CT) scanner with two objectives: (1) to construct SMs in the shortest possible time and store them in an ordinary PC without losing quality, (2) to analyze the possible applications of the proposed method to 3D, taking into account SMs' sizes, computing time and reconstructed image quality. In order to build the SM, we propose two new field of view (FOV) pixellation schemes, based on a polar coordinate system (polar grid) by taking advantage of the polar rotation symmetries of CT devices. Comparisons between the SMs proposed are performed using two phantom and a real CT-simulator images. Global error, contrast, noise and homogeneity of the reconstructed images are discussed.

Menjo, H. et al, Faus-Golfe, A., & Velasco, J. (2011). Monte Carlo study of forward pi(0) production spectra to be measured by the LHCf experiment for the purpose of benchmarking hadron interaction models at 10(17) eV. Astropart Phys., 34(7), 513–520.
Abstract: The LHCf experiment aims to improve knowledge of forward neutral particle production spectra at the LHC energy which is relevant for the interpretation of air shower development of high energy cosmic rays. Two detectors, each composed of a pair of sampling and imaging calorimeters, have been installed at the forward region of IP1 to measure pi(0) energy spectra above 600 GeV. In this paper, we present a Monte Carlo study of the pi(0) measurements to be performed with one of the LHCf detectors for proton-proton collisions at root s = 14 TeV. In approximately 40 min of operation at luminosity 0.8 x 10(29) cm(-2) s(-1) during the beam commissioning phase of LHC, about 1.5 x 10(4) pi(0) events are expected to be obtained at two transverse positions of the detector. The backgrounds from interactions of secondary particles with beam pipes and interactions of beam particles with residual gas in the beam pipes are expected to be less than 0.1% of the signal from pi(0)s. We also discuss the capability of LHCf measurements to discriminate between the various hadron interaction models that are used for simulation of high energy air showers, such as DPMJET3.03, QGSJETII-03, SIBYLL2.1 and EPOS1.99.

Mendez, V., Amoros, G., & Kaci, M. (2011). A Decentralized Deployment Strategy and Performance Evaluation of LCG File Catalog Service. J. Grid Comput., 9(3), 345–354.
Abstract: The LHC Computing Grid (LCG) leads by CERN, has solved with the LCG File Catalog (LFC) the major problem of scaling the data management catalog. However, additional performance issues should be faced to deploy a painless catalog service. With this aim, we present a decentralized LFC server configuration, and its performance evaluation compared with the traditional LFC deployment. A performance analysis is shown, including not only the catalog server, but also analysing the client side overhead. We find that the LFC service has in the clients a relevant workload of the overall service. The experimental results show that the proposed LFC deployment for servers and clients, improves the performance of the service.

Navarro, J., & Guardiola, R. (2011). Thermal Effects on Small Para-Hydrogen Clusters. Int. J. Quantum Chem., 111(2), 463–471.
Abstract: A brief review of different quantum Monte Carlo simulations of small (p-H-2)(N) clusters is presented. The clusters are viewed as a set of N structureless p-H-2 molecules, interacting via an isotropic pairwise potential. Properties as superfluidity, magic numbers, radial structure, excitation spectra, and abundance production of (p-H-2)(N) clusters are discussed and, whenever possible, a comparison with He-4(N) droplets is presented. All together, the simulations indicate that temperature has a paradoxical effect of the properties of (p-H-2)(N) clusters, as they are solid-like at high T and liquid-like at low T, due to quantum delocalization at the lowest temperature.

Pavon Valderrama, M. (2011). Perturbative renormalizability of chiral two-pion exchange in nucleon-nucleon scattering. Phys. Rev. C, 83(2), 024003–11pp.
Abstract: We study the perturbative renormalizability of chiral two-pion exchange for singlet and triplet channels within effective field theory, provided that the one-pion exchange piece of the interaction has been fully iterated. We determine the number of counterterms/subtractions needed to obtain finite results when the cutoff is removed, resulting in three counterterms for the singlet channel and six for the triplet. The results show that perturbative chiral two-pion exchange reproduce the data up to a center-of-mass momentum of k similar to 200-300 MeV in the singlet channel and k similar to 300-400 MeV in the triplet.
