Title Ramp-up of Hawking Radiation in Bose-Einstein-Condensate Analog Black Holes Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 126 Issue 11 Pages 111301 - 6pp
  Keywords
Abstract Inspired by a recent experiment by Steinhauer and co-workers, we present a simple model which describes the formation of an acoustic black hole in a Bose-Einstein condensate, allowing an analytical computation of the evolution in time of the corresponding density-density correlator. We show the emergence of analog Hawking radiation out of a “quantum atmosphere” region significantly displaced from the horizon. This is quantitatively studied both at T = 0 and even in the presence of an initial temperature T, as is always the case experimentally.

Title Very Heavy Flavored Dibaryons Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 124 Issue 21 Pages 212001 - 4pp
  Keywords
Abstract We explore the possibility of very heavy dibaryons with three charm quarks and three beauty quarks, bbbccc, using a constituent model which should lead to the correct solution in the limit of hadrons made of heavy quarks. The six-body problem is treated rigorously, in particular taking into account the orbital, color, and spin mixed-symmetry components of the wave function. Unlike a recent claim based on lattice QCD, no bound state is found below the lowest dissociation threshold.

Title Observation of Enhanced Double Parton Scattering in Proton-Lead Collisions at root s(NN)=8.16 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 125 Issue 21 Pages 212001 - 13pp
  Keywords
Abstract A study of prompt charm-hadron pair production in proton-lead collisions at root s(NN) = 8.16 TeV is performed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 30 nb(-1), collected with the LHCb experiment. Production cross sections for different pairs of charm hadrons are measured and kinematic correlations between the two charm hadrons are investigated. This is the first measurement of associated production of two charm hadrons in proton-lead collisions. The results confirm the predicted enhancement of double parton scattering production in proton-lead collisions compared to the single parton scattering production.

Title Search for Axionlike Particles Produced in e(+)e(-) Collisions at Belle II Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 125 Issue 16 Pages 161806 - 9pp
  Keywords
Abstract We present a search for the direct production of a light pseudoscalar a decaying into two photons with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We search for the process e(+)e(-) -> gamma a, a -> gamma gamma in the mass range 0.2 < m(a) < 9.7 GeV/c(2) using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of (445 +/- 3) pb(-1). Light pseudoscalars interacting predominantly with standard model gauge bosons (so-called axionlike particles or ALPs) are frequently postulated in extensions of the standard model. We find no evidence for ALPs and set 95% confidence level upper limits on the coupling strength g(a gamma gamma) of ALPs to photons at the level of 10(-3) GeV-1. The limits are the most restrictive to date for 0.2 < m(a) < 1 GeV/c(2).

Title Search for Heavy Resonances Decaying into a Photon and a Hadronically Decaying Higgs Boson in pp Collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS Detector Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 125 Issue 25 Pages 251802 - 20pp
  Keywords
Abstract This Letter presents a search for the production of new heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon using proton-proton collision data at root s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1). The analysis is performed by reconstructing hadronically decaying Higgs boson (H -> b (b) over bar) candidates as single large-radius jets. A novel algorithm using information about the jet constituents in the center-of-mass frame of the jet is implemented to identify the two b quarks in the single jet. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the production cross-section times branching fraction for narrow spin-1 resonances decaying into a Higgs boson and a photon in the resonance mass range from 0.7 to 4 TeV, cross-section times branching fractions are excluded between 11.6 fb and 0.11 fb at a 95% confidence level.

Title Medium-Induced Modification of Z-Tagged Charged Particle Yields in Pb plus Pb Collisions at 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS Detector Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 126 Issue 7 Pages 072301 - 20pp
  Keywords
Abstract The yield of charged particles opposite to a Z boson with large transverse momentum (p(T)) is measured in 260 pb(-1) of pp and 1.7 nb(-1) of Pb + Pb collision data at 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The Z boson tag is used to select hard-scattered partons with specific kinematics, and to observe how their showers are modified as they propagate through the quarkgluon plasma created in Pb + Pb collisions. Compared with pp collisions, charged-particle yields in Pb + Pb collisions show significant modifications as a function of charged-particle p(T) in a way that depends on event centrality and Z boson p(T). The data are compared with a variety of theoretical calculations and provide new information about the medium-induced energy loss of partons in a p(T) regime difficult to measure through other channels.

Title Model-Independent Study of Structure in B+ -> D+D-K+ Decays Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 125 Issue 24 Pages 242001 - 10pp
  Keywords
Abstract The only anticipated resonant contributions to B+ -> D+D-K+ decays are charmonium states in the D+D- channel. A model-independent analysis, using LHCb proton-proton collision data taken at centerof-mass energies of root s = 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb(-1), is carried out to test this hypothesis. The description of the data assuming that resonances only manifest in decays to the D+D- pair is shown to be incomplete. This constitutes evidence for a new contribution to the decay, potentially one or more new charm-strange resonances in the D-K+ channel with masses around 2.9 GeV/c(2).

Title Edges and Endpoints in 21-cm Observations from Resonant Photon Production Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 127 Issue 1 Pages 011102 - 7pp
  Keywords
Abstract We introduce a novel class of signatures-spectral edges and end points-in 21-cm measurements resulting from interactions between the standard and dark sectors. Within the context of a kinetically mixed dark photon, we demonstrate how resonant dark photon-to-photon conversions can imprint distinctive spectral features in the observed 21-cm brightness temperature, with implications for current, upcoming, and proposed experiments targeting the cosmic dawn and the dark ages. These signatures open up a qualitatively new way to look for physics beyond the Standard Model using 21-cm observations.

Title Observation of Multiplicity Dependent Prompt chi(c1) (3872) and psi (2S) Production in pp Collisions Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 126 Issue 9 Pages 092001 - 11pp
  Keywords
Abstract The production of chi(c1)(3872) and psi(2S) hadrons is studied as a function of charged particle multiplicity in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb(-1). For both states, the fraction that is produced promptly at the collision vertex is found to decrease as charged particle multiplicity increases. The ratio of chi(c1) (3872) to psi(2S) cross sections for promptly produced particles is also found to decrease with multiplicity, while no significant dependence on multiplicity is observed for the equivalent ratio of particles produced away from the collision vertex in b-hadron decays. This behavior is consistent with a calculation that models the chi(c1) (3872) structure as a compact tetraquark. Comparisons with model calculations and implications for the binding energy of the chi(c1)(3872) state are discussed.

Title Observation and Measurement of Forward Proton Scattering in Association with Lepton Pairs Produced via the Photon Fusion Mechanism at ATLAS Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 125 Issue 26 Pages 261801 - 21pp
  Keywords
Abstract The observation of forward proton scattering in association with lepton pairs (e(+)e(-) + p or mu(+)mu(-) + p) produced via photon fusion is presented. The scattered proton is detected by the ATLAS Forward Proton spectrometer, while the leptons are reconstructed by the central ATLAS detector. Proton-proton collision data recorded in 2017 at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV are analyzed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.6 fb(-1). A total of 57 (123) candidates in the ee + p (mu μ+ p) final state arc selected, allowing the background-only hypothesis to be rejected with a significance exceeding 5 standard deviations in each channel. Proton-tagging techniques are introduced for cross-section measurements in the fiducial detector acceptance, corresponding to sigma(ee)(+p) = 11.0 +/- 2.6(stat) 1.2(syst) +/- 0.3(lumi) and sigma(mu)(mu+)(p) = 7.2 +/- 1.6(stat) +/- 0.9(syst) 0.2(lumi) fb in the dielectron and dimuon channel, respectively.
