Title Precision Measurement of CP Violation in B-S(0) -> J/Psi K+K- Decays Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 114 Issue 4 Pages 041801 - 9pp
Keywords
Abstract The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B-S(0) -> J/Psi K+K- decays is measured using pp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1), collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. In a sample of 96 000 B-S(0) -> J/Psi K+K- decays, the CP-violating phase phi(s) is measured, as well as the decay widths GL and GH of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B-s(0)-(B) over bar (0)(s) system. The values obtained are phi(s) = -0.058 +/- 0.049 +/- 0.006 rad, Gamma(s) equivalent to (Gamma(L) + Gamma(H))/2 = 0.6603 +/- 0.0027 +/- 0.0015 ps(-1), and Delta Gamma(s) equivalent to Gamma(L)-Gamma(H) = 0.0805 +/- 0.0091 +/- 0.0032 ps(-1), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second, systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of those quantities to date. A combined analysis with B-s(0) -> J/Psi pi(+)pi(-) decays gives phi(s) = -0.010 +/- 0.039 rad. All measurements are in agreement with the standard model predictions. For the first time, the phase phi(s) is measured independently for each polarization state of the K+K- system and shows no evidence for polarization dependence.

Title Observation of the rare B-s(0)->mu(+)mu(-) decay from the combined analysis of CMS and LHCb data Type Journal Article

Volume 522 Issue 7554 Pages 68-72

Abstract The standard model of particle physics describes the fundamental particles and their interactions via the strong, electromagnetic and weak forces. It provides precise predictions for measurable quantities that can be tested experimentally. The probabilities, or branching fractions, of the strange B meson (B-s(0)) and the B-0 meson decaying into two oppositely charged muons (mu(+) and mu(-)) are especially interesting because of their sensitivity to theories that extend the standard model. The standard model predicts that the B-s(0)->mu(+)mu(-) and B-0 ->mu(+)mu(-) decays are very rare, with about four of the former occurring for every billion B-s(0) mesons produced, and one of the latter occurring for every ten billion B-0 mesons(1). A difference in the observed branching fractions with respect to the predictions of the standard model would provide a direction in which the standard model should be extended. Before the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN2 started operating, no evidence for either decay mode had been found. Upper limits on the branching fractions were an order of magnitude above the standard model predictions. The CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) and LHCb(Large Hadron Collider beauty) collaborations have performed a joint analysis of the data from proton-proton collisions that they collected in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of seven teraelectronvolts and in 2012 at eight teraelectronvolts. Here we report the first observation of the B-s(0)->mu(+)mu(-) decay, with a statistical significance exceeding six standard deviations, and the best measurement so far of its branching fraction. Furthermore, we obtained evidence for the B-0 ->mu(+)mu(-) decay with a statistical significance of three standard deviations. Both measurements are statistically compatible with standard model predictions and allow stringent constraints to be placed on theories beyond the standard model. The LHC experiments will resume taking data in 2015, recording proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 teraelectronvolts, which will approximately double the production rates of B-s(0) and B-0 mesons and lead to further improvements in the precision of these crucial tests of the standard model.

Title Observation of Two New Xi(-)(b) Baryon Resonances Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
Volume 114 Issue 6 Pages 062004 - 9pp
Keywords
Abstract Two structures are observed close to the kinematic threshold in the Xi(0)(b)pi(-) mass spectrum in a sample of proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1), recorded by the LEICb experiment. In the quark model, two baryonic resonances with quark content bds are expected in this mass region: the spin-parity J(P) = (1/2)(+) and J(P) = (3/2)(+) states, denoted Xi'(-)(b) and Xi*(-)(b). Interpreting the structures as these resonances, we measure the mass differences and the width of the heavier state to be m(Xi'(-)(b)) – m(Xi(0)(b)) – m(pi(-))=3.653 +/- 0.018 +/- 0.006 MeV/c(2), m(Xi*(-)(b)) – m(Xi(0)(b)) – m(pi(-)) = 23.96 +/- 0.12 +/- 0.06 MeV/e(2), Gamma(Xi*(-)(b)) = 1.65 +/- 0.31 +/- 0.10 MeV, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The width of the lighter state is consistent with zero, and we place an upper limit of Gamma(Xi'(-)(b)) < 0.08 MeV at 95% confidence level. Relative production rates of these states are also reported.

Title Measurement of the lifetime of the B-c(+) cmeson using the B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+) decay mode Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
Volume 742 Issue Pages 29-37
Keywords
Abstract The difference in total widths between the B-c(+) and B+ mesons is measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment in 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Through the study of the time evolution of B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+) and B+ -> J/psi K+ decays, the width difference is measured to be Delta Gamma = Gamma(Bc+) – Gamma(Bc+) = 4.46 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.07 mm(-1) c, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The known lifetime of the B+ meson is used to convert this to a precise measurement of the B-c(+) clifetime, tau(Bc+) = 513.4 +/- 11.0 +/- 5.7 fs, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Title Measurement of the inelastic pp cross-section at a centre-of-mass energy of root s=7 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 02 Issue 2 Pages 129 - 16pp
Keywords Hadron-Hadron Scattering; Global features
Abstract The cross-section for inelastic proton-proton collisions, with at least one prompt long-lived charged particle of transverse momentum P-T > 0.2GeV/c in the pseudorapidity range 2.0 < eta < 4.5, is measured by the 1:11Cb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 7 TeV. The cross-section in this kinematic range is determined to be sigma(accc)(inel) = 55.0 +/- 2.4 nib with an experimental uncertainty that is dominated by systematic contributions. Extrapolation to the full phase space, using PYTHIA 6, yields sigma(inel) = 66.9 +/- 2.9 +/- 4.4 nib, where the first uncertainty is experimental and the second is due to the extrapolation.

Title Search for long-lived particles decaying to jet pairs Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication European Physical Journal C Abbreviated Journal Eur. Phys. J. C
Volume 75 Issue 4 Pages 152 - 12pp
Keywords
Abstract A search is presented for long-lived particles with a mass between 25 and 50 GeV/c(2) and a lifetime between 1 and 200 ps in a sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.62 fb(-1), collected by the LHCb detector. The particles are assumed to be pair-produced by the decay of a standard model-like Higgs boson. The experimental signature of the long-lived particle is a displaced vertex with two associated jets. No excess above the background is observed and limits are set on the production cross-section as a function of the long-lived particle mass and lifetime.

Title Measurement of the D-0 -> pi(-)e(+)nu(e) differential decay branching fraction as a function of q(2) and study of form factor parametrizations Type Journal Article

Abstract Based on a sample of 500 million e(+)e(-) -> c (c) over bar events recorded by the BABAR detector at c. m. energies of close to 10.6 GeV, we report on a study of the decay D0 ->pi(-)e(+)nu(e). We measure the ratio of branching fractions, R-D = B(D-0 -> pi(-)e(+)nu(e))/beta(D-0 -> K-pi(+)) = 0.0713 +/- 0.0017(stat) +/- 0.0024(syst), and use the present world average for B(D-0 -> K-pi(+)) to obtain B(D-0 -> pi(-)e(+)nu e) = (2.770 +/- 0.068(stat) +/- 0.092(syst) +/- 0.037(ext)) x 10(-3) where the third error accounts for the uncertainty on the branching fraction for the reference channel. The measured dependence of the differential branching fraction on q(2), the four-momentum transfer squared between the D and the pi meson, is compared to various theoretical predictions for the hadronic form factor, f(+,D)(pi)(q(2)), and the normalization vertical bar V-cd vertical bar x f(+,D)(pi)(q(2) = 0) = 0.1374 +/- 0.0038(stat) +/- 0.0022(sys)t +/- 0.0009(ext). is extracted from a fit to data. Using the most recent LQCD prediction of f(+,D)(pi)(q(2) = 0) = 0.666 +/- 0.029, we obtain vertical bar V-cd vertical bar = 0.206 +/- 0.007(exp) +/- 0.009(LQCD). Assuming, instead, vertical bar V-cd vertical bar = vertical bar V-us vertical bar = 0.2252 +/- 0.0009, we obtain f(+,D)(pi)(q(2) = 0) = 0.610 +/- 0.020(exp) +/- 0.005(ext). The q(2) dependence of f(+,D)(pi)(q(2)) is compared to a variety of multipole parametrizations. This information is applied to B-0 -> pi(-)e(+)nu(e) decays and, combined with an earlier B-0 -> pi(-)e(+)nu(e) measurement by BABAR, is used to derive estimates of vertical bar V-ub vertical bar.

Abstract The LHCb detector is a forward spectrometer at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The experiment is designed for precision measurements of CP violation and rare decays of beauty and charm hadrons. In this paper the performance of the various LHCb sub-detectors and the trigger system are described, using data taken from 2010 to 2012. It is shown that the design criteria of the experiment have been met. The excellent performance of the detector has allowed the LHCb collaboration to publish a wide range of physics results, demonstrating LHCb's unique role, both as a heavy flavour experiment and as a general purpose detector in the forward region.

Abstract A search for the rare decays B-s(0) -> pi(+) pi-mu(+) mu-and B-0 -> pi(+) pi-mu(+) mu-is performed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Decay candidates with pion pairs that have invariant mass in the range 0.5-1.3GeV/c(2) and with muon pairs that do not originate from a resonance are considered. The first observation of the decay B-s(0) -> pi(+) pi-mu(+) mu- and the first evidence of the decay B-0 -> pi(+) pi-mu(+) mu-are obtained and the branching fractions, restricted to the dipion-mass range considered, are measured to be B(B-s(0) -> pi(+) pi-mu(+) mu(-)) =(8.6 +/- 1.5(stat) +/- 0.7(syst) +/- 0.7 (norm)) x 10(-8) and B(B-0 -> pi(+) pi-mu(+) mu(-)) =(2.11 +/- 0.51(stat) +/- 0.15(syst) +/- 0.16(norm)) x10(-8), where the third uncertainty is due to the branching fraction of the decay B-0. -> J/Psi(mu(+) mu(-)) K*(892)(0)(-> K+ pi(-)), used as a normalisation.

Abstract We present Dalitz plot analyses for the decays of B mesons to (D-DK+)-K-0 and (D) over bar (DK+)-D-0-K-0. We report the observation of the D*(s1)(2700)(+) resonance in these two channels and obtain measurements of the mass M(D*(s1)(2700)(+)) = 2699(-7)(+14) MeV/c(2) and of the width Gamma(D*(s1)(2700)(+)) = 127(-19)(+24) MeV, including statistical and systematic uncertainties. In addition, we observe an enhancement in the (DK+)-K-0 invariant mass around 2350-2500 MeV/c(2) in both decays B-0 -> (D-DK+)-K-0 and B+ -> (D) over bar (DK+)-D-0-K-0, which we are not able to interpret. The results are based on 429 fb(-1) of data containing 471 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
