Abstract: This Letter reports the observation of single top quarks produced together with a photon, which directly probes the electroweak coupling of the top quark. The analysis uses 139 fb(-1) of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Requiring a photon with transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV and within the detector acceptance, the fiducial cross section is measured to be 688 +/- 23(stat)(-71)(+75) (syst) fb, to be compared with the standard model prediction of 515(-42)(+36) fb at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Abstract: Observations are reported of different sources of CP violation from an amplitude analysis of B+ -> pi(+)pi(+)pi(-) decays, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1) of pp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. A large CP asymmetry is observed in the decay amplitude involving the tensor f(2)(1270) resonance, and in addition significant CP violation is found in the pi(+)pi S- wave at low invariant mass. The presence of CP violation related to interference between the pi(+)pi S- wave and the P wave B+ -> rho(770)(0)pi(+) amplitude is also established; this causes large local asymmetries but cancels when integrated over the phase space of the decay. The results provide both qualitative and quantitative new insights into CP -violation effects in hadronic B decays.

Abstract: This Letter presents a study of the flavor-changing neutral current radiative B-+/- -> K-+/-pi(-/+)pi(+/-)gamma decays performed using data collected in proton-proton collisions with the LHCb detector at 7 and 8 TeV center-of-mass energies. In this sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1), nearly 14 000 signal events are reconstructed and selected, containing all possible intermediate resonances with a K-+/-pi(-/+)pi(+/-) final state in the [1.1, 1.9] GeV/c(2) mass range. The distribution of the angle of the photon direction with respect to the plane defined by the final-state hadrons in their rest frame is studied in intervals of K-+/-pi(-/+)pi(+/-) mass and the asymmetry between the number of signal events found on each side of the plane is obtained. The first direct observation of the photon polarization in the b -> s(gamma) transition is reported with a significance of 5.2 sigma.

Abstract: The resonant substructure of B-s(0) -> (D) over bar K-0(-)pi(+) decays is studied using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) of pp collision data recorded by the LHCb detector. An excess at m((D) over bar K-0(-)) approximate to 2.86 GeV/c(2) is found to be an admixture of spin-1 and spin-3 resonances. Therefore, the D-sJ*(2860)(-) state previously observed in inclusive e(+)e(-) -> (D) over bar (K-X)-K-0 and pp -> (D) over bar (K-X)-K-0 processes consists of at least two particles. This is the first observation of a heavy flavored spin-3 resonance, and the first time that any spin-3 particle has been seen to be produced in B decays. The masses and widths of the new states and of the D-s2*(2573)(-) meson are measured, giving the most precise determinations to date.

Abstract: Two new excited states, S2c(3185)0 and S2c(3327)0, are observed in the E thorn c K- invariant-mass spectrum using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb-1. Five previously observed excited S20c states are confirmed, namely S2c(3000)0, S2c(3050)0, S2c(3065)0, S2c(3090)0, and S2c(3119)0. The masses and widths of these seven states are measured with the highest precision to date.
