Title (up) First constraints on the Lμ – Lτ explanation of the muon g-2 anomaly from NA64-e at CERN Type Journal Article
Year 2024 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 07 Issue 7 Pages 212 - 15pp
Keywords Beyond Standard Model; Fixed Target Experiments; Dark Matter
Abstract The inclusion of an additional U(1) gauge L-mu – L-tau symmetry would release the tension between the measured and the predicted value of the anomalous muon magnetic moment: this paradigm assumes the existence of a new, light Z ' vector boson, with dominant coupling to μand tau leptons and interacting with electrons via a loop mechanism. The L-mu – L-tau model can also explain the Dark Matter relic abundance, by assuming that the Z ' boson acts as a “portal” to a new Dark Sector of particles in Nature, not charged under known interactions. In this work we present the results of the Z ' search performed by the NA64-e experiment at CERN SPS, that collected similar to 9 x 10(11) 100 GeV electrons impinging on an active thick target. Despite the suppressed Z ' production yield with an electron beam, NA64-e provides the first accelerator-based results excluding the g – 2 preferred band of the Z ' parameter space in the 1 keV < m(Z ') less than or similar to 2 MeV range, in complementarity with the limits recently obtained by the NA64-mu experiment with a muon beam.

Title (up) First determination of beta-delayed multiple neutron emission beyond A=100 through direct neutron measurement: The P-2n value of Sb-136 Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
  Volume 98 Issue 3 Pages 034310 - 10pp
  Keywords
Abstract Background: beta-delayed multiple neutron emission has been observed for some nuclei with A <= 100 being the Rb-100 the heaviest beta 2n emitter measured to date. So far only 25 P-2n values have been determined for the approximate to 300 nuclei that may decay in this way. Accordingly it is of interest to measure P-2n values for the other possible multiple neutron emitters throughout the chart of the nuclides. It is of particular interest to make such a measurement for nuclei with A > 100 to test the predictions of theoretical models and simulation tools for the decays of heavy nuclei in the region of very neutron-rich nuclei. In addition the decay properties of these nuclei are fundamental for the understanding of astrophysical nucleosynthesis processes such as the r-process and safety inputs for nuclear reactors. Purpose: To determine for the first time the two-neutron branching ratio the P-2n value for Sb-136 through a direct neutron measurement and to provide precise P-1n values for Sb-136 and Te-136. Method: A pure beam of each isotope of interest was provided by the JYFLTRAP Penning trap at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility of the University of Jyvaskyla Finland. The purified ions were implanted into a moving tape at the end of the beam line. The detection setup consisted of a plastic scintillator placed right behind the implantation point after the tape to register the beta decays and the BELEN detector based on neutron counters embedded in a polyethylene matrix. The analysis was based on the study of the beta- and neutron-growth-and-decay curves and the beta-one-neutron and beta-two-neutron time correlations which allowed us the determination of the neutron branching ratios. Results: The P-2n value of Sb-136 was found to be 0.14(3)% and the measured P-1n values for Sb-136 and Te-136 were found to be 32.2(15)% and 1.47(6)% respectively. Conclusions: The measured P-2n value is a factor 44 smaller than predicted by the finite-range droplet model plus the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (FRDM+QRPA) model used for r-process calculations.

Title (up) First Evidence for cos 2 beta > 0 and Resolution of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Quark-Mixing Unitarity Triangle Ambiguity Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 121 Issue 26 Pages 261801 - 11pp
  Keywords
Abstract We present first evidence that the cosine of the CP-violating weak phase 2 beta is positive, and hence exclude trigonometric multifold solutions of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) Unitarity Triangle using a time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis of B-0 -> D-(*) h(0) with D -> K-S(0)pi(+)pi(-) decays, where h(0) is an element of {pi(0), eta, omega} denotes a light unflavored and neutral hadron. The measurement is performed combining the final data sets of the BABAR and Belle experiments collected at the (sic)(4S) resonance at the asymmetric-energy B factories PEP-II at SLAC and KEKB at KEK, respectively. The data samples contain (471 +/- 3) x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs recorded by the BABAR detector and (772 +/- 11) x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs recorded by the Belle detector. The results of the measurement are sin 2 beta = 0.80 +/- 0.14 (stat) +/- 0.06 (syst) +/- 0.03 (model) and cos 2 beta = 0.91 +/- 0.22(stat) +/- 0.09 (syst) +/- 0.07(model). The result for the direct measurement of the angle beta of the CKM Unitarity Triangle is beta = [22.5 +/- 4.4 (stat) +/- 1.2 (syst) +/- 0.6(model)]degrees. The measurement assumes no direct CP violation in B-0 -> D-(*) h(0) decays. The quoted model uncertainties are due to the composition of the D-0 -> K-S(0)pi(+)pi(-) decay amplitude model, which is newly established by performing a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis using a high-statistics e(+)e(-) -> c (c) over bar data sample. CP violation is observed in B-0 -> D-(*) h(0) decays at the level of 5.1 standard deviations. The significance for cos 2 beta > 0 is 3.7 standard deviations. The trigonometric multifold solution pi/2 – beta = (68.1 +/- 0.7)degrees is excluded at the level of 7.3 standard deviations. The measurement resolves an ambiguity in the determination of the apex of the CKM Unitarity Triangle.

Title (up) First i-TED demonstrator: A Compton imager with Dynamic Electronic Collimation Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research A Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A

Abstract i-TED consists of both a total energy detector and a Compton camera primarily intended for the measurement of neutron capture cross sections by means of the simultaneous combination of neutron time-of-flight (TOF) and gamma-ray imaging techniques. TOF allows one to obtain a neutron-energy differential capture yield, whereas the imaging capability is intended for the discrimination of radiative background sources, that have a spatial origin different from that of the capture sample under investigation. A distinctive feature of i-TED is the embedded Dynamic Electronic Collimation (DEC) concept, which allows for a trade-off between efficiency and image resolution. Here we report on some general design considerations and first performance characterization measurements made with an i-TED demonstrator in order to explore its gamma-ray detection and imaging capabilities.

Title (up) First lifetime investigations of N > 82 iodine isotopes: The quest for collectivity Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C
  Volume 104 Issue 1 Pages 014316 - 18pp

Abstract We report on spectroscopic information and lifetime measurements in the neutron-rich I-135,I-137,I-139 isotopes. This is the first lifetime data on iodine isotopes beyond N = 82. Excited states were populated in fast neutron-induced fission of U-238 at the ALTO facility of IJCLab with the LICORNE neutron source and detected using the hybrid nu-ball spectrometer. The level schemes of the I-135,I-137,I-139 isotopes are revised in terms of excited states with up to maximum spin-parity of (33/2(+)), populated for the first time in fast neutron-induced fission. We provide first results on the lifetimes of the (9/2(1)(+)) and (13/2(1)(+)) states in I-137 and I-139, and the (17/2(1)(+)) state in 137I. In addition, we give upper lifetime limits for the (11/2(1)(+)) states in I135-139, the (15/2(1)(+)) state in I-137, the (17/2(1)(+)) state in I-139, and reexamine the (29/2(1)(+)) state in I-137. The isomeric data in I-13(5) are reinvestigated, such as the previously known (15/2(1)(+)) and (23/21) isomers with T-1/2 of 1.64(14) and 4.6(7) ns, respectively, as obtained in this work. The new spectroscopic information is compared to that from spontaneous or thermal-neutron induced fission and discussed in the context of large scale shell-model (LSSM) calculations for the region beyond Sn-132, indicating the behavior of collectivity for the three valence-proton iodine chain with N = 82, 84, 86.

Title (up) First Measurement of Charm Production in its Fixed-Target Configuration at the LHC Type Journal Article
Year 2019 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 122 Issue 13 Pages 132002 - 12pp

Abstract The first measurement of heavy-flavor production by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target mode is presented. The production of J/psi and D-0 mesons is studied with beams of protons of different energies colliding with gaseous targets of helium and argon with nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies of root s(NN) = 86.6 and 110.4 GeV, respectively. The J/psi and D-0 production cross sections in pHe collisions in the rapidity range [2, 4.6] are found to be sigma(J/psi) = 652 +/- 33(stat) +/- 42(syst) nb/nucleon and sigma(D0) = 80.8 +/- 2.4(syst) +/- 6.3(syst) μb/nucleon, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. No evidence for a substantial intrinsic charm content of the nucleon is observed in the large Bjorken-x region.

Title (up) First measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on hydrocarbon without pions in the final state using multiple detectors with correlated energy spectra at T2K Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 108 Issue 11 Pages 112009 - 32pp

Abstract This paper reports the first measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions without pions in the final state using multiple detectors with correlated energy spectra at T2K. The data was collected on hydrocarbon targets using the off-axis T2K near detector (ND280) and the on-axis T2K near detector (INGRID) with neutrino energy spectra peaked at 0.6 GeV and 1.1 GeV, respectively. The correlated neutrino flux presents an opportunity to reduce the impact of the flux uncertainty and to study the energy dependence of neutrino interactions. The extracted double-differential cross sections are compared to several Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators showing the agreement between both detectors individually and with the correlated result.

Title (up) First measurement of the CP-violating phase in B-s(0) -> J/Psi (-> e(+) e(-))phi decays Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication European Physical Journal C Abbreviated Journal Eur. Phys. J. C
  Volume 81 Issue 11 Pages 1026 - 18pp
  Keywords
Abstract A flavour-tagged time-dependent angular analysis of B-s(0) -> J/Psi phi decays is presented where the J/Psi meson is reconstructed through its decay to an e(+)e(-) pair. The analysis uses a sample of pp collision data recorded with the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1). The CP-violating phase and lifetime parameters of the B-s(0) s system are measured to be phi(s) = 0.00 +/- 0.28 +/- 0.07 rad, Delta Gamma(s) = 0.115 +/- 0.045 +/- 0.011 ps(-1) and Delta Gamma(s) = 0.608 +/- 0.018 +/- 0.012 ps(-1) where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the first time that CP-violating parameters are measured in the B-s(0) -> J/Psi phi decay with an e+e- pair in the final state. The results are consistent with previous measurements in other channels and with the Standard Model predictions.

Abstract The first study of the angular distribution of mu(+) mu(-) pairs produced in the forward rapidity region via the Drell-Yan reaction pp -> gamma*/Z + X -> l(+) l(-) + X is presented, using data collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb(-1). The coefficients of the five leading terms in the angular distribution are determined as a function of the dimuon transverse momentum and rapidity. The results are compared to various theoretical predictions of the Z-boson production mechanism and can also be used to probe transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions within the proton.
