Abstract: Prompt photon production in root S-NN = 2.76-TeV Pb + Pb collisions has been measured by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data collected in 2011 with an integrated luminosity of 0.14 nb(-1). Inclusive photon yields, scaled by the mean nuclear thickness function, are presented as a function of collision centrality and transverse momentum in two pseudorapidity intervals, vertical bar eta vertical bar < 1.37 and 1.52 <= vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.37. The scaled yields in the two pseudorapidity intervals, as well as the ratios of the forward yields to those at midrapidity, are compared to the expectations from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations. The measured cross sections agree well with the predictions for proton-proton collisions within statistical and systematic uncertainties. Both the yields and the ratios are also compared to two other pQCD calculations, one which uses the isospin content appropriate to colliding lead nuclei and another which includes nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distribution functions.

Abstract: Linear polarization and angular correlations of gamma-rays depopulating excited states in the neutron-deficient nucleus Ru-94(44)50 have been measured, enabling firm spin-parity assignments for several excited states in this nucleus. The deduced multipolarities of strong transitions in the yrast structure were found to be mostly of stretched M1, E1, and E2 types and, in most cases, in agreement with previous tentative assignments. The deduced multipolarity of the 1869 keV and the connecting 257 and 1641 keV transitions indicates that the state at 6358 keV excitation energy has spin parity 12(1)(-) rather than 12(3)(+) as proposed in previous works. The presence of a 12(1)(-) state is interpreted within the framework of large-scale shell-model calculations as a pure proton-hole state dominated by the pi(p(1/2)(-1)circle times g(9/2)(-5)) and pi(p(3/2)(-1) g(9/2)(-5)) configurations. A new positive-parity state is observed at 6103 keV and is tentatively assigned as 12(2)(+). The 14(1)(-) state proposed earlier is reassigned as 13(4)(-) and is interpreted as being dominated by neutron particle-hole core excitations. The strengths of several E1 transitions have been measured and are found to provide a signature of core-excited configurations.

Abstract: We explore the interplay between renormalization, charge independence and charge symmetry breaking (CIB and CSB) in S-wave nucleon-nucleon scattering. The renormalizability requirement generates universality functions, that is, correlations between the low-energy scattering observables in the neutron-neutron, neutron-proton, and proton-proton systems. The universality functions only depend on the (known) form of the nucleon-nucleon potential at long distances and, in particular, they do not require any assumptions about short-range CIB and CSB effects. In addition, the inclusion of Coulomb effects is trivial for the particular case of proton-proton scattering, allowing us to relate strong and Coulomb scattering observables. Within this approach, and using a one-boson-exchange potential, the previous correlations are shown to be phenomenologically satisfied without the need to introduce further parameters.

Abstract: With the aim of achieving a better and more complete understanding of neutrino interactions with nuclear targets, the coherent production of charged kaons induced by neutrinos and antineutrinos is investigated in the energy range of some of the current neutrino experiments. We follow a microscopic approach which, at the nucleon level, incorporates the most important mechanisms allowed by the chiral-symmetry-breaking pattern of QCD. The distortion of the outgoing K ((K) over bar) is taken into account by solving the Klein-Gordon equation with realistic optical potentials. Angular and momentum distributions, as well as the energy and nuclear dependence of the total cross section, are studied.

Abstract: The spins and parities of low-lying states in 72Br populated in the beta decay of 72Kr have been studied via conversion electron spectroscopy. The measurements were carried out at ISOLDE using a miniorange spectrometer with Si(Li) and HPGe detectors for electrons and gamma ray detection. Results of the conversion coefficients corresponding to transitions deexciting 12 levels in 72Br are reported. The multipolarities of the transitions are deduced and the spins and parities of the levels involved are discussed. From the multipolarities of the most intense transitions to the ground state, the spin and parity of the 72Br ground state have been definitely established as 1+. The spin of the 101.2-keV isomeric state is determined to be 3-. The level scheme is compared with mean-field and shell-model calculations and oblate deformation for the 72Br ground state is deduced. No E0 transitions have been found in 72Br. E0 transitions in the neighboring isobaric nuclei, 72Se and 72Ge, have also been studied.

Abstract: The interrelation of the quadrupole deformation and clusterization is investigated in the example of the (56)Ni nucleus. The shape isomers, including superdeformed and hyperdeformed states, are obtained as stability regions of the quasidynamical U(3) symmetry based on a Nilsson calculation. Their possible binary clusterizations are investigated by considering both the consequences of the Pauli exclusion principle and the energetic preference.

Abstract: The repulsive short-distance core is one of the main paradigms of nuclear physics which even seems confirmed by QCD lattice calculations. On the other hand nuclear potentials at short distances are motivated by high energy behavior where inelasticities play an important role. We analyze NN interactions up to 3 GeV in terms of simple coarse grained complex and energy dependent interactions. We discuss two possible and conflicting scenarios which share the common feature of a vanishing wave function at the core location in the particular case of S waves. We find that the optical potential with a repulsive core exhibits a strong energy dependence whereas the optical potential with the structural core is characterized by a rather adiabatic energy dependence which allows one to treat inelasticity perturbatively. We discuss the possible implications for nuclear structure calculations of both alternatives.

Abstract: Background: Neutron-rich nuclei with protons in the fp shell show an onset of collectivity around N=40. Spectroscopic information is required to understand the underlying mechanism and to determine the relevant terms of the nucleon-nucleon interaction that are responsible for the evolution of the shell structure in this mass region. Methods: We report on the lifetime measurement of the first 2+ and 4+ states in 70,72,74Zn and the first 6+ state in 72Zn using the recoil distance Doppler shift method. The experiment was carried out at the INFN Laboratory of Legnaro with the AGATA demonstrator, first phase of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array of highly segmented, high-purity germanium detectors coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. The excited states of the nuclei of interest were populated in the deep inelastic scattering of a 76Ge beam impinging on a 238U target. Results: The maximum of collectivity along the chain of Zn isotopes is observed for 72Zn at N=42. An unexpectedly long lifetime of 20−5.2+1.8 ps was measured for the 4+ state in 74Zn. Conclusions: Our results lead to small values of the B(E2;41+→21+)/B(E2;21+→01+) ratio for 72,74Zn, suggesting a significant noncollective contribution to these excitations. These experimental results are not reproduced by state-of-the-art microscopic models and call for lifetime measurements beyond the first 2+ state in heavy zinc and nickel isotopes.

Abstract: We use recent data that show a narrow peak around root s = 2.37 GeV in the pn -> d pi(+)pi(-) cross section, with about double strength at the peak than in the analogous pn -> d pi(0)pi(0) reaction, and, assuming that it is due to the excitation of a dibaryon resonance, we evaluate the cross section for the pn -> pn pi(+)pi(-) reaction, with the final pn unbound but with the same quantum numbers as the deuteron. We use accurate techniques to determine the final state interaction in the case of the pn forming a deuteron or a positive energy state, which allow us to get the pn -> pn pi(+)pi(-) cross section with pn in I = 0 and S = 1, that turns out to be quite close or saturates the experimental pn -> pn pi(+)pi(-) total cross section around root s = 2.37 GeV, depending on the angular momentum assumed. This poses problems to the assumption of the dibaryon hypothesis, which could be rendered more restrictive with future precise data on the pn -> pn pi(+)pi(-) reaction.

Abstract: The electromagnetic responses of carbon obtained from the Green's function Monte Carlo and spectral function approaches using the same dynamical input are compared in the kinematical region corresponding to momentum transfer in the range 300-570 MeV. The results of our analysis, aimed at pinning down the limits of applicability of the approximations involved in the two schemes, indicate that the factorization ansatz underlying the spectral function formalism provides remarkably accurate results down to momentum transfer as low as 300 MeV. On the other hand, it appears that at 570 MeV relativistic corrections to the electromagnetic current not included in the Monte Carlo calculations may play a significant role in the transverse channel.
