Abstract: We consider static spherically symmetric configurations in a Palatini extension of General Relativity including R-2 and Ricci-squared terms, which is known to replace the central singularity by a wormhole in the electrovacuum case. We modify the matter sector of the theory by adding to the usual Maxwell term a nonlinear electromagnetic extension which is known to implement a confinement mechanism in flat space. One feature of the resulting theory is that the nonlinear electric field leads to a dynamically generated cosmological constant. We show that with this matter source the solutions of the model are asymptotically de Sitter and possess a wormhole topology. We discuss in some detail the conditions that guarantee the absence of singularities and of traversable wormholes.

Abstract: Relaxing the Riemannian condition to incorporate geometric quantities such as torsion and non-metricity may allow to explore new physics associated with defects in a hypothetical space-time microstructure. Here we show that non-metricity produces observable effects in quantum fields in the form of 4-fermion contact interactions, thereby allowing us to constrain the scale of non-metricity to be greater than 1 TeV by using results on Bahbah scattering. Our analysis is carried out in the framework of a wide class of theories of gravity in the metric-affine approach. The bound obtained represents an improvement of several orders of magnitude to previous experimental constraints.

Abstract: A search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The datasets used correspond to integrated luminosities of approximately 4.8 fb(-1) collected at, root s = 7 TeV in 2011 and 5.8 fb(-1) at root s = 8 TeV in 2012. Individual searches in the channels H -> ZZ(()*()) -> 4l, H -> gamma gamma and H -> WW (()*()) -> ev μv in the 8 TeV data are combined with previously published results of searches for H -> ZZ(()*()), WW(*()), b (b) over bar and tau(+)tau(-) in the 7 TeV data and results from improved analyses of the H -> ZZ(()*()) -> 4l and H -> gamma gamma channels in the 7 TeV data. Clear evidence for the production of a neutral boson with a measured mass of 126.0 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.4 (sys) GeV is presented. This observation, which has a significance of 5.9 standard deviations, corresponding to a background fluctuation probability of 1.7 x 10(-9), is compatible with the production and decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson. Abstract: The first observation of the decay eta(c)(2S) -> p (p) over bar is reported using proton -proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre -of -mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The eta c(2S) resonance is produced in the decay B+ [c (c) over bar ]K+. The product of branching fractions normalised to that for the intermediate state, R-eta c,(2s), is measured to be R-eta c,(2s) equivalent to B(B+-> eta c (2S)K+) x B(eta c(2s)(2S) -> p<<(p)over bar> )/B(B+ -> J/psi k(+)) x B(J/psi -> p<<(p)over bar> ) = (1.58 +/- 0.33 +/- 0.09) x 10(-2), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No signals for the decays B+ -> X(3872)(-> p (p) over bar )K+ and B+ psi(3770)(-> p (p) over bar )K+ are seen, and the 95% confidence level upper limits on their relative branching ratios are found to be R-x(3872) < 0.25 x 10(-2) and R-psi(3770) < 0.10. In addition, the mass differences between the nc(1S) and the J/psi states, between the eta(c)(2S) and the eta(c)(2S) states, and the natural width of the psi(1S) are measured as M-J/psi – M-eta c(7s)= 110.2 +/- 0.5 +/- 0.9 MeV, M psi(2S) – M-eta c (2S) = 52.5 +/- 1.7 +/- 0.6 MeV, Gamma(eta c) (1s) = 34.0 +/- 1.9 +/- 1.3 MeV.

Abstract: A search for the decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson into a b (b) over bar pair when produced in association with a W or Z boson is performed with the ATLAS detector. The data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 79.8 fb(-1) were collected in proton-proton collisions during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, an excess of events over the expected background from other Standard Model processes is found with an observed (expected) significance of 4.9 (4.3) standard deviations. A combination with the results from other searches in Run 1 and in Run 2 for the Higgs boson in the bb decay mode is performed, which yields an observed (expected) significance of 5.4 (5.5) standard deviations, thus providing direct observation of the Higgs boson decay into b-quarks. The ratio of the measured event yield for a Higgs boson decaying into b (b) over bar to the Standard Model expectation is 1.01 +/- 0.12(stat.) (-0.15) (+0.16)(syst.). Additionally, a combination of Run 2 results searching for the Higgs boson produced in association with a vector boson yields an observed (expected) significance of 5.3 (4.8) standard deviations.
