  Title (up) First Measurement of the Charge Asymmetry in Beauty-Quark Pair Production Type Journal Article
  Year 2014 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 113 Issue 8 Pages 082003 - 9pp
  Keywords
  Abstract The difference in the angular distributions between beauty quarks and antiquarks, referred to as the charge asymmetry, is measured for the first time in b (b) over bar pair production at a hadron collider. The data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1) collected at 7 TeV center-of-mass energy in proton-proton collisions with the LHCb detector. The measurement is performed in three regions of the invariant mass of the b (b) over bar system. The results obtained are A(C)(b (b) over bar) (40 < M-b<(b)over bar> < 75 GeV/c(2)) = 0.4 +/- 0.4 +/- 0.3%, A(C)(b (b) over bar) (75 < M-b<(b)over bar> < 105 GeV/c(2)) = 2.0 +/- 0.9 +/- 0.6%, A(C)(b (b) over bar) (M-b (b) over bar > 10(5) GeV/c(2)) = 1.6 +/- 1.7 +/- 0.6%,where A(C)(b (b) over bar) is defined as the asymmetry in the difference in rapidity between jets formed from the beauty quark and antiquark, where in each case the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The beauty jets are required to satisfy 2 < eta < 4, E-T > 20 GeV, and have an opening angle in the transverse plane Delta phi > 2.6 rad. These measurements are consistent with the predictions of the standard model.

  Title (up) First Observation of a Baryonic B-c(+) Decay Type Journal Article
  Year 2014 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 113 Issue 15 Pages 152003 - 9pp
  Keywords
  Abstract A baryonic decay of the B-c(+) meson, B-c(+) -> J/psi p (p) over bar pi(+) is observed for the first time, with a significance of 7.3 standard deviations, in pp collision data collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) taken at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. With the B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+) decay as the normalization channel, the ratio of branching fractions is measured to be B(B-c(+) -> J/psi p (p) over bar pi(+)) /B(B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+)) = 0.143(-0.034)(+0.039) (stat) +/- 0.013 (syst). The mass of the B-c(+) messon is determined as M(B-c(+)) = 6274.0 +/- 0.4 (sysst) MeV/c(2), using the B-c(+) -> J/psi p (p) over bar pi(+) channel.

  Title (up) First observations of the rare decays B (+) -> K (+)pi (+)pi (-)mu(+)mu (-) and B (+)-> phi K (+)mu(+)mu (-) Type Journal Article
  Year 2014 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 10 Issue 10 Pages 064 - 18pp
  Keywords Rare decay; Hadron-Hadron Scattering; B physics; Flavor physics
  Abstract First observations of the rare decays B (+) -> K (+)pi (+) pi (-) μ(+) μ(-) and B (+)-> phi K+ mu(+)mu(-) are presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1), collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The branching fractions of the decays are B(B (+) -> K (+)pi (+) pi (-) μ(+) μ(-) ) = (4.36 (-0.27) (+0.29) (stat) +/- 0.21 (syst) +/- (norm)) x 10(-7), B(B (+)-> phi K+ mu(+)mu(-)) = (0.82 (+0.19)(-0.17) (stat) (+0.10)(-0.04) (syst) +/- 0.27 (norm)) x 10(-7) where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty on the branching fractions of the normalisation modes. A measurement of the differential branching fraction in bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system is also presented for the decay B (+) -> K (+)pi (+) pi (-) μ(+) μ(-)

  Title (up) Fitting (NLO)-L-3 pseudo-potentials through central plus tensor Landau parameters Type Journal Article
  Year 2014 Publication Journal of Physics G Abbreviated Journal J. Phys. G
  Volume 41 Issue 6 Pages 065104 - 12pp
  Keywords Landau parameters; (NLO)-L-3; phenomenological interactions; fitting methods
  Abstract Landau parameters determined from phenomenological finite-range interactions are used to get an estimation of next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order ((NLO)-L-3) pseudo-potentials parameters. The parameter sets obtained in this way are shown to lead to consistent results concerning saturation properties. The uniqueness of this procedure is discussed, and an estimate of the error induced by the truncation at (NLO)-L-3 is given.

  Title (up) Flavor Composition of the High-Energy Neutrino Events in IceCube Type Journal Article
  Year 2014 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 113 Issue 9 Pages 091103 - 5pp
  Keywords
  Abstract The IceCube experiment has recently reported the observation of 28 high-energy (> 30 TeV) neutrino events, separated into 21 showers and 7 muon tracks, consistent with an extraterrestrial origin. In this Letter, we compute the compatibility of such an observation with possible combinations of neutrino flavors with relative proportion (alpha(e:)alpha(mu):alpha tau)(circle plus). Although the 7: 21 track-to-shower ratio is naively favored for the canonical (1:1:1)(circle plus) at Earth, this is not true once the atmospheric muon and neutrino backgrounds are properly accounted for. We find that, for an astrophysical neutrino E-2 energy spectrum, (1:1:1)(circle plus). at Earth is disfavored at 81% C. L. If this proportion does not change, 6 more years of data would be needed to exclude (1:1:1)(circle plus) at Earth at 3 sigma C.L. Indeed, with the recently released 3-yr data, that flavor composition is excluded at 92% C. L. The best fit is obtained for (1:0:0)(circle plus). at Earth, which cannot be achieved from any flavor ratio at sources with averaged oscillations during propagation. If confirmed, this result would suggest either a misunderstanding of the expected background events or a misidentification of tracks as showers, or even more compellingly, some exotic physics which deviates from the standard scenario.
