Title (down) W+W- production at high transverse momenta beyond NLO Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Nuclear Physics B Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Phys. B
  Volume 879 Issue Pages 65-79
  Keywords
Abstract Pair production of W gauge bosons is an important process at the LHC entering many experimental analyses, both as background in new-physics searches or Higgs measurements and as signal in precision studies and tests of the Standard Model. Therefore, accurate predictions for this class of processes are of great interest in order to exploit the full potential of LHC measurements. We use the LoopSim method to combine NLO QCD results for WW and WW + jet, as well as the loop-squared gluon-fusion contribution, to obtain approximate NNLO predictions for WW production. The cross sections are calculated with VBFNLO and include leptonic decays of the W bosons as well as finite-width and off-shell effects. We find that the size of the additional corrections beyond NLO can be significant and well outside of the NLO error bands given by renormalization and factorization scale variation. Applying a jet veto, we observe further negative corrections at NNLO. which we relate to the presence of large Sudakov logarithms.

Title (down) W polarisation beyond helicity fractions in top quark decays Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Nuclear Physics B Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Phys. B
  Volume 840 Issue 1-2 Pages 349-378
  Keywords
Abstract We calculate the density matrix for the decay of a polarised top quark into a polarised W boson and a massive 17 quark, for the most general Wth vertex arising from dimension-six gauge-invariant effective operators. We show that, in addition to the well-known W helicity fractions, for polarised top decays it is worth defining and studying the transverse and normal W polarisation fractions, that is, the W polarisation alone two directions orthogonal to its momentum. In particular, a rather simple forward-backward asymmetry in the normal direction is found to be very sensitive to complex phases in one of the Wth anomalous couplings. This asymmetry, which indicates a normal W polarisation, can be generated for example by a P-odd. T-odd transition electric dipole moment. We also investigate the angular distribution of decay products in the top quark rest frame, calculating the spin analysing powers for a general Wth vertex. Finally we show that, using a combined fit to top decay observables and the t W cross section, at LHC it will be possible to obtain model-independent measurements of all the (complex) Wth couplings as well as the single top polarisation. Implications for spin correlations in top pair production are also discussed.

Title (down) Up, down, strange and charm quark masses with N-f=2+1+1 twisted mass lattice QCD Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Nuclear Physics B Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Phys. B
  Volume 887 Issue Pages 19-68
  Keywords
Abstract We present a lattice QCD calculation of the up, down, strange and charm quark masses performed using the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration with N-f = 2 + 1 + 1 dynamical quarks, which include in the sea, besides two light mass degenerate quarks, also the strange and charm quarks with masses close to their physical values. The simulations are based on a unitary setup for the two light quarks and on a mixed action approach for the strange and charm quarks. The analysis uses data at three values of the lattice spacing and pion masses in the range 210-450 MeV, allowing for accurate continuum limit and controlled chiral extrapolation. The quark mass renormalization is carried out non-perturbatively using the RI'-MOM method. The results for the quark masses converted to the (MS) over bar scheme are: m(ud) (2 GeV) = 3.70(17) MeV, m(s)(2 GeV) = 99.6(4.3) MeV and m(c)(m(c)) = 1.348(46) GeV. We obtain also the quark mass ratios m(s)/m(ud) = 26.66(32) and m(c)/m(s) = 11.62(16). By studying the mass splitting between the neutral and charged kaons and using available lattice results for the electromagnetic contributions, we evaluate m(u)/m(d) = 0.470(56), leading to m(u) = 2.36(24) MeV and m(d) = 5.03(26) MeV.

Title (down) Tri/Bi-maximal lepton mixing and leptogenesis Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Nuclear Physics B Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Phys. B
  Volume 827 Issue 1-2 Pages 34-58
  Keywords
Abstract In models with flavour symmetries added to the gauge group of the Standard Model the CP-violating asymmetry necessary for leptogenesis may be related with low-energy parameters. A particular case of interest is when the flavour symmetry produces exact Tri/Bi-maximal lepton mixing leading to a vanishing CP-violating asymmetry. In this paper we present a model-independent discussion that confirms this always occurs for unflavoured leptogenesis in type I see-saw scenarios, noting however that Tri/Bi-maximal mixing does not imply a vanishing asymmetry in general scenarios where there is interplay between type I and other see-saws. We also consider a specific model where the exact Tri/Bi-maximal mixing is lifted by corrections that can be parametrised by a small number of degrees of freedom and analyse in detail the existing link between low and high-energy parameters – focusing on how the deviations from Tri/Bi-maximal are connected to the parameters governing leptogenesis.

Title (down) The Zee-Babu model revisited in the light of new data Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Nuclear Physics B Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Phys. B
  Volume 885 Issue Pages 542-570
  Keywords
Abstract We update previous analyses of the Zee-Babu model in the light of new data, e.g., the mixing angle On, the rare decay μ-> e gamma and the LHC results. We also analyze the possibility of accommodating the deviations in Gamma (H -> gamma gamma) hinted by the LHC experiments, and the stability of the scalar potential. We find that neutrino oscillation data and low energy constraints are still compatible with masses of the extra charged scalars accessible to LHC. Moreover, if any of them is discovered, the model can be falsified by combining the information on the singly and doubly charged scalar decay modes with neutrino data. Conversely, if the neutrino spectrum is found to be inverted and the CP phase delta is quite different from pi, the masses of the charged scalars will be well outside the LHC reach.

Title (down) The reactor mixing angle and CP violation with two texture zeros in the light of T2K Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication Nuclear Physics B Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Phys. B
  Volume 857 Issue 3 Pages 411-423
  Keywords
Abstract We reconsider the phenomenological implications of two texture zeros in symmetric neutrino mass matrices in the light of the recent T2K results for the reactor angle and the new global analysis which gives also best fit values for the Dirac CP phase delta. The most important results of the analysis are: Among the viable cases classified by Frampton etal, only A(1) and A(2) predict theta(13) to be different from zero at 3 sigma. Furthermore these two cases are compatible only with a normal mass spectrum in the allowed region for the reactor angle. At the best fit value A(1) and A(2) predict 0.024 >= sin(2)theta(13) >= 0.012 and 0.014 <= sin(2)theta(13) <= 0.032, respectively, where the bounds on the right and the left correspond to cos delta = -1 and cos delta = 1, respectively. The cases B-1, B-2, B-3 and B-4 predict nearly maximal CP violation, i.e. cos delta approximate to 0.

Title (down) The new (g-2)(mu) and right-handed sneutrino dark matter Type Journal Article
Year 2022 Publication Nuclear Physics B Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Phys. B
  Volume 974 Issue Pages 115637 - 23pp
  Keywords
Abstract In this paper we investigate the (g – 2)(mu) discrepancy in the context of the R-parity conserving next-to minimal supersymmetric Standard Model plus right-handed neutrinos superfields. The model has the ability to reproduce neutrino physics data and includes the interesting possibility to have the right-handed sneutrino as the lightest supersymmetric particle and a viable dark matter candidate. Since right-handed sneutrinos are singlets, no new contributions for delta a(mu) with respect to the MSSM and NMSSM are present. However, the possibility to have the right-handed sneutrino as the lightest supersymmetric particle opens new ways to escape Large Hadron Collider and direct detection constraints. In particular, we find that dark matter masses within 10 less than or similar to m((upsilon) over tildeR) less than or similar to 600 GeV are fully compatible with current experimental constraints. Remarkably, not only spectra with light sleptons are needed, but we obtain solutions with m((mu) over tilde) greater than or similar to 600 GeV in the entire dark matter mass range that could be probed by new (g – 2)(mu) data in the near future. In addition, dark matter direct detection experiments will be able to explore a sizable portion of the allowed parameter space with mvR < 300 GeV, while indirect detection experiments will be able to probe a much smaller fraction within 200 less than or similar to m((nu)over tilde>R) less than or similar to 350 GeV.

Title (down) Semileptonic decays of light quarks beyond the Standard Model Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication Nuclear Physics B Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Phys. B
  Volume 830 Issue 1-2 Pages 95-115
Keywords Semileptonic decays; CKM unitarity; Effective theory; Beyond the Standard Model
Abstract We describe non-standard contributions to semileptonic processes in a model independent way in terms of in SU(2)(L) x U(1)(Y) invariant effective lagrangian at the weak scale, front which we derive the low-energy effective lagrangian governing muon and beta decays. We find that the deviation from Cabibbo universality, Delta(CKM) equivalent to vertical bar V-ud vertical bar(2) + vertical bar V-us vertical bar(2) + vertical bar V-ub vertical bar(2) – 1, receives contributions from four effective operators. The phenomenological bound Delta(CKM) = (-1 +/- 6) x 10(-4) provides strong constraints on all four operators, corresponding to art effective scale Lambda > 11 TeV (90% CL). Depending on the operator, this constraint is at the same level or better then the Z pole observables. Conversely, precision electroweak constraints alone would allow universality violations as large as Delta(CKM) = -0.01 (90% CL). An observed Delta(CKM) not equal 0 at this level Could be explained in terms of a single four-fermion operator which is relatively poorly constrained by electroweak precision measurements.

Year 2018 Publication Nuclear Physics B Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Phys. B
  Volume 930 Issue Pages 563-582
  Keywords
Abstract A search for decays of B-c(+) mesons to two charm mesons is performed for the first time using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1), collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The decays considered are B-c(+)-> D-(s)(()*())(+) (D) over bar (()*()0) and Bc(+)-> D-(s)(()*D-)+(()*())(0), which are normalised to high-yield B+-> D-(s)(+)(D) over bar (0)decays. No evidence for a signal is found and limits are set on twelve B-c(+) decay modes.

Abstract We generalize the two-loop renormalization group equations for the parameters of the softly broken SUSY gauge theories given in the literature to the most general case when the gauge group contains more than a single Abelian gauge factor. The complete method is illustrated at two-loop within a specific example and compared to some of the previously proposed partial treatments.
