Title Skyrme effective pseudopotential up to the next-to-next-to-leading order Type Journal Article

Abstract The explicit form of the next-to-next-to-leading order ((NLO)-L-2) of the Skyrme effective pseudopotential compatible with all required symmetries and especially with gauge invariance is presented in a Cartesian basis. It is shown in particular that for such a pseudopotential there is no spin-orbit contribution and that the D-wave term suggested in the original Skyrme formulation does not satisfy the invariance properties. The six new (NLO)-L-2 terms contribute to both the equation of state and the Landau parameters. These contributions to symmetric nuclear matter are given explicitly and discussed.

Title Characterisation and mitigation of beam-induced backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector during the 2011 proton-proton run Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.

Abstract This paper presents a summary of beam-induced backgrounds observed in the ATLAS detector and discusses methods to tag and remove background contaminated events in data. Trigger-rate based monitoring of beam-related backgrounds is presented. The correlations of backgrounds with machine conditions, such as residual pressure in the beam-pipe, are discussed. Results from dedicated beam-background simulations are shown, and their qualitative agreement with data is evaluated. Data taken during the passage of unpaired, i.e. non-colliding, proton bunches is used to obtain background-enriched data samples. These are used to identify characteristic features of beam-induced backgrounds, which then are exploited to develop dedicated background tagging tools. These tools, based on observables in the Pixel detector, the muon spectrometer and the calorimeters, are described in detail and their efficiencies are evaluated. Finally an example of an application of these techniques to a monojet analysis is given, which demonstrates the importance of such event cleaning techniques for some new physics searches.

Title Nonzero |U_e3| from charged lepton corrections and the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 05 Issue 5 Pages 073 - 27pp
Keywords Neutrino Physics; CP violation
Abstract After the successful determination of the reactor neutrino mixing angle theta(13) not equal 0.16 not equal 0, a new feature suggested by the current neutrino oscillation data is a sizeable deviation of the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle theta(23) from pi/4. Using the fact that the neutrino mixing matrix U = (UeU nu)-U-dagger, where U-e and U-nu result from the diagonalisation of the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, and assuming that U-nu has a i) bimaximal (BM), H) tri-bimaximal (TBM) form, or else Hi) corresponds to the conservation of the lepton charge L' = L-e – L μ- L-tau (LC), we investigate quantitatively what are the minimal forms of U-e, in terms of angles and phases it contains, that can provide the requisite corrections to U-nu so that theta(13), theta(23) and the solar neutrino mixing angle theta(12) have values compatible with the current data. Two possible orderings of the 12 and the 23 rotations in U-e, “standard” and “inverse”, are considered. The results we obtain depend strongly on the type of ordering. In the case of “standard” ordering, in particular, the Dirac CP violation phase delta, present in U, is predicted to have a value in a narrow interval around i) delta similar or equal to pi in the BM (or LC) case, H) delta congruent to 3 pi/2 or pi/2 in the TBM case, the CP conserving values delta = 0, pi, 2 pi being excluded in the TBM case at more than 4 sigma.

Title The Freudenthal gauge symmetry of the black holes of N=2, d=4 supergravity Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 05 Issue 5 Pages 011 - 15pp
Keywords Black Holes; String Duality; Gauge Symmetry; Supergravity Models
Abstract We show that the representation of black-hole solutions in terms of the variables H-M which are harmonic functions in the supersymmetric case is non-unique due to the existence of a local symmetry in the effective action. This symmetry is a continuous (and local) generalization of the discrete Freudenthal transformations initially introduced for the black-hole charges and can be used to rewrite the physical fields of a solution in terms of entirely different-looking functions.

Title Search for third generation scalar leptoquarks in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 06 Issue 6 Pages 033 - 40pp
Keywords Hadron-Hadron Scattering
Abstract A search for pair-produced third generation scalar leptoquarks is presented, using proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV at the LHC. The data were recorded with the ATLAS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb(-1). Each leptoquark is assumed to decay to a tau lepton and a b-quark with a branching fraction equal to 100%. No statistically significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed. Third generation leptoquarks are therefore excluded at 95% confidence level for masses less than 534 GeV.

Title Triggers for displaced decays of long-lived neutral particles in the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
Volume 8 Issue Pages P07015 - 35pp
Keywords Trigger concepts and systems (hardware and software); Online farms and online filtering; Trigger algorithms
Abstract A set of three dedicated triggers designed to detect long-lived neutral particles decaying throughout the ATLAS detector to a pair of hadronic jets is described. The efficiencies of the triggers for selecting displaced decays as a function of the decay position are presented for simulated events. The effect of pile-up interactions on the trigger efficiencies and the dependence of the trigger rate on instantaneous luminosity during the 2012 data-taking period at the LHC are discussed.

Title Shape evolution in Ru-116,Ru-118: Triaxiality and transition between the O(6) and U(5) dynamical symmetries Type Journal Article

Abstract Ru-116 and Ru-118 have been studied via beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy of nuclei produced in fragmentation reactions at the Radioactive Ion-Beam Factory (RIBF) facility. Level schemes with positive-parity states up to spin J = 6 have been constructed. The results have been discussed in terms of the interacting boson model, the algebraic collective model, and total Routhian surfaces. We conclude that the very neutron-rich nuclei still show many features associated with triaxial gamma-soft nuclei, represented by the O(6) symmetry, but are approaching a spherical structure, the U(5) symmetry, with increasing neutron number towards the N = 82 shell closure. In Ru-118, hints of a shape transition in the ground state have been observed.

Abstract We report on the calculation of W-+/- Zjj production with leptonic decays at hadron-hadron colliders at next-to-leading order in QCD. These processes are important both to test the quartic gauge couplings of the standard model and because they constitute relevant backgrounds to beyond standard model physics searches. Our results show that the next-to-leading order corrections reduce significantly the scale uncertainties and have a nontrivial phase space dependence.

Title Evidence of electron neutrino appearance in a muon neutrino beam Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 88 Issue 3 Pages 032002 - 41pp
Keywords
Abstract The T2K Collaboration reports evidence for electron neutrino appearance at the atmospheric mass splitting, vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar approximate to 2.4 X 10(-3) eV(2). An excess of electron neutrino interactions over background is observed from a muon neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV at the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector 295 km from the beam's origin. Signal and background predictions are constrained by data from near detectors located 280 m from the neutrino production target. We observe 11 electron neutrino candidate events at the SK detector when a background of 3.3 +/- 0.4(syst) events is expected. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with a p value of 0.0009 (3.1 sigma), and a fit assuming nu(mu) -> nu(e) oscillations with sin (2)2 theta(23) = 1, delta(CP) = 0 and vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar = 2.4 X 10(-3) eV(2) yields sin (2)2 theta(13) = 0.088(-0.039)(+0.049)(stat + syst).

Abstract We search for the decay Upsilon(1S) -> A(0), A(0) -> gg or s (s) over bar, where A(0) is the pseudoscalar light Higgs boson predicted by the next-to-minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. We use a sample of (17.6 +/- 0.3) x 10(6) Upsilon(1S) mesons produced in the BABAR experiment via e(+)e(-) -> Upsilon(2S) -> pi(+)pi(-)Upsilon(1S). We see no significant signal and set 90%-confidence-level upper limits on the product branching fraction B(Upsilon(1S) -> gamma A(0)) . B(A(0) -> gg or s (s) over bar ranging from 10(-6) to 10(-2) for A(0) masses in the range 0.5-9.0 GeV/c(2).
