Abstract |
We report the results of a study of the exclusive charmless semileptonic decays, B-0 -> pi(-)l(+)nu, B+ -> pi(0)l(+)nu, B+ -> omega l(+)nu, B+ -> eta l(+)nu, and B+ -> eta'l(+)nu (l = e or mu) undertaken with approximately 462 X 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. The analysis uses events in which the signal B decays are reconstructed with a loose neutrino reconstruction technique. We obtain partial branching fractions in several bins of q(2), the square of the momentum transferred to the lepton-neutrino pair, for B-0 -> pi(-)l(+)nu, B+ -> pi(0)l(+)nu, B+ -> omega l(+)nu, and B+ -> eta l(+)nu. From these distributions, we extract the form-factor shapes f(+)(q(2)) and the total branching fractions B(B-0 -> pi(-)l(+)nu) = (1.45 +/- 0.04(stat) +/- 0.06(syst)) X 10(-4) (combined pi(-) and pi(0) decay channels assuming isospin symmetry), B(B+ -> omega l(+)nu) = (1.19 +/- 016(stat) +/- 0.09(syst)) X 10(-4) and B(B+ -> eta l(+)nu) = (0.38 +/- 0.05(stat) +/- 0.05(syst)) X 10(-4). We also measure B(B+ -> eta'l(+)nu) = (0.24 +/- 0.08(stat) +/- 0.03(syst)) X 10(-4). We obtain values for the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (KM) matrix element vertical bar V-ub vertical bar by direct comparison with three different QCD calculations in restricted q(2) ranges of B -> pi l(+)nu decays. From a simultaneous fit to the experimental data over the full q(2) range and the FNAL/MILC lattice QCD predictions, we obtain vertical bar V-ub vertical bar = (3.25 +/- 0.31) X 10(-3), where the error is the combined experimental and theoretical uncertainty. |

Abstract |
We study the formation and perturbation of black holes by null fluxes of neutral matter in a quadratic extension of general relativity formulated a la Palatini. Working in a spherically symmetric space-time, we obtain an exact analytical solution for the metric that extends the usual Vaidya-type solution to this type of theory. We find that the resulting space-time is formally that of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole but with an effective charge term carrying the wrong sign in front of it. This effective charge is directly related to the luminosity function of the radiation stream. When the ingoing flux vanishes, the charge term disappears and the space-time relaxes to that of a Schwarzschild black hole. We provide two examples that illustrate the formation of a black hole from Minkowski space and the perturbation by a finite pulse of radiation of an existing Schwarzschild black hole. |

Abstract |
This work presents a new inclusive search for supersymmetry (SUSY) by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy root s = 7 TeV in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum and one or more isolated electrons and/or muons. The search is based on data from the full 2011 data-taking period, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb(-1). Single-lepton and multilepton channels are treated together in one analysis. An increase in sensitivity is obtained by simultaneously fitting the number of events in statistically independent signal regions, and the shapes of distributions within those regions. A dedicated signal region is introduced to be sensitive to decay cascades of SUSY particles with small mass differences (“compressed SUSY”). Background uncertainties are constrained by fitting to the jet-multiplicity distribution in background control regions. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations, and limits are set or extended on a number of SUSY models. |

Abstract |
We consider cumulant moments (cumulants) of the thrust distribution using predictions of the full spectrum for thrust including O(alpha(3)(s)) fixed order results, resummation of singular (NLL)-L-3 logarithmic contributions, and a class of leading power corrections in a renormalon-free scheme. From a global fit to the first thrust moment we extract the strong coupling and the leading power correction matrix element Omega(1). We obtain alpha(s)(m(Z)) = 0.1140 +/- (0.0004)(exp) +/- (0.0013)(hadr) +/- (0.0007)(pert), where the 1-sigma uncertainties are experimental, from hadronization (related to Omega(1)) and perturbative, respectively, and Omega(1) = 0.377 +/- (0.044)(exp) +/- (0.039)(pert) GeV. The nth thrust cumulants for n >= 2 are completely insensitive to Omega(1), and therefore a good instrument for extracting information on higher order power corrections, Omega'(n)/Q(n), from moment data. We find ((Omega) over tilde '2)(1/2) = 0.74 +/- (0.11)(exp) +/- (0.09)(pert) GeV. |

Abstract |
We discuss the minimal supersymmetric U(1)(B-L) X U(1)(R) extension of the standard model. Gauge couplings unify as in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), even if the scale of U(1)(B-L) X U(1)(R) breaking is as low as order TeV and the model can be embedded into a SO(10) grand unified theory. The phenomenology of the model differs in some important aspects from the MSSM, leading potentially to rich phenomenology at the LHC. It predicts more light Higgs states and the mostly left CP-even Higgs having a mass that easily reaches 125 GeV, with no constraints on the supersymmetry spectrum. Right sneutrinos can be the lightest supersymmetric particle, changing all dark matter constraints on supersymmetry parameter space. The model has seven neutralinos, and squark/gluino decay chains involve more complicated cascades than in the MSSM. We also briefly discuss low-energy and accelerator constraints on the model, where the most important limits come from recent Z' searches at the LHC and upper limits on lepton flavor violation. |

Abstract |
We consider static spherically symmetric stellar configurations in Palatini theories of gravity in which the Lagrangian is an unspecified function of the form f(R, R μnu R μnu). We obtain the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations corresponding to this class of theories and show that they recover those of f(R) theories and general relativity in the appropriate limits. We show that the exterior vacuum solutions are of Schwarzschild-de Sitter type and comment on the possible expected modifications, as compared to general relativity, of the interior solutions. |

Abstract |
We present a study of the many-body interaction between a D* and multi-rho. We use an extrapolation to SU(4) of the hidden gauge formalism, which produced dynamically the resonances f(2)(1270) in the rho rho interaction and D-2* (2460) in the rho D* interaction. We then let a third particle, rho, D*, or a resonance, collide with them, evaluating the scattering amplitudes in terms of the fixed center approximation of the Faddeev equations. We find several clear resonant structures above 2800 MeV in the multibody scattering amplitudes. They would correspond to new charmed resonances, D-3*, D-4*, D-5*, and D-6*, which are not yet listed in the Particle Data Group, which would be analogous to the rho(3)(1690), f(4)(2050), rho(5)(2350), f(6)(2510) and K-3*(1780), K-4*(2045), K-5*(2380) described before as multi-rho and K*-multi-rho states, respectively. |

Abstract |
This paper describes the performance and sensitivity to neutrino mixing parameters of a Magnetised Iron Neutrino Detector at a Neutrino Factory with a neutrino beam created from the decay of 10 GeV muons. Specifically, it is concerned with the ability of such a detector to detect muons of the opposite sign to those stored (wrong-sign muons) while suppressing contamination of the signal from the interactions of other neutrino species in the beam. A new, more realistic simulation and analysis, which improves the efficiency of this detector at low energies, has been developed using the GENIE neutrino event generator and the GEANT4 simulation toolkit. Low-energy neutrino events down to 1 GeV were selected, while reducing backgrounds to the 10(-4) level. Signal efficiency plateaus of similar to 60% for nu(mu) and similar to 70% for (nu) over bar (mu) events were achieved starting at similar to 5 GeV. Contamination from the nu(mu) -> nu(tau) oscillation channel was studied for the first time and was found to be at the level between 1% and 4%. Full response matrices are supplied for all the signal and background channels from 1 GeV to 10 GeV. The sensitivity of an experiment involving a Magnetised Iron Neutrino Detector detector of 100 ktons at 2000 km from the Neutrino Factory is calculated for the case of sin(2)2 theta(13) similar to 10(-1). For this value of theta(13), the accuracy in the measurement of the CP-violating phase is estimated to be Delta delta(CP) similar to 3 degrees-5 degrees, depending on the value of delta(CP), the CP coverage at 5 sigma is 85% and the mass hierarchy would be determined with better than 5 sigma level for all values of delta(CP). |

Abstract |
We report a study of the process gamma gamma -> X -> eta(c)pi(+)pi(-) , where X stands for one of the resonances chi(c2)(1P), eta(c)(2S), X(3872), X(3915), or chi(c2)(2P). The analysis is performed with a data sample of 473.9 fb(-1) collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. We do not observe a significant signal for any channel, and calculate 90% confidence-level upper limits on the products of branching fractions and two-photon widths Gamma B-x ->gamma gamma(X -> eta(c)pi(+) pi(-)): 15.7 eV for chi(c2)(1P), 133 eV for eta(c)(2S), 11.1 eV for X(3872) (assuming it to be a spin-2 state), 16 eV for X(3915) (assuming it to be a spin-2 state), and 18 eV for chi(c2)(2P). We also report upprt limits on the rations of branching fractions B(eta(c)(2S) -> eta(c)pi(+) pi(-))/B(eta(c)(2S) -> (KSK+)-K-0 pi(-)) < 10.0 and B(chi(c2)(1P) -> eta(c)pi(+) pi(-))/B(chi(c2)(1P) -> (KSK+)-K-0 pi(-)) < 32.9 at the 90% confidence level. |

Abstract |
We present measurements of the branching fractions of three-prong and five-prong tau decay modes using a sample of 430 million tau lepton pairs, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 468 fb(-1), collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e_e storage rings at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The tau(-) -> (3 pi)(-) eta nu(tau), tau(-) -> (3 pi)(-) omega nu(tau), and tau(-) f(1) (1285)nu(tau) branching fractions are presented, as well as a new limit on the branching fraction of the second-class current decay tau(-) -> pi(-) eta'(958)nu(tau). We search for the decay mode tau(-) -> K- eta'(958)nu(tau) and for five-prong decay modes with kaons, and place the first upper limits on their branching fractions. |
