Abstract: The identification of b-jets, referred to as b-tagging, is an important part of many physics analyses in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider and an accurate calibration of its performance is essential for high-quality physics results. This publication describes the calibration of the light-flavour jet mistagging efficiency in a data sample of proton-proton collision events at root s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1). The calibration is performed in a sample of Z bosons produced in association with jets. Due to the low mistagging efficiency for light-flavour jets, a method which uses modified versions of the b-tagging algorithms referred to as flip taggers is used in this work. A fit to the jet-flavour-sensitive secondary-vertex mass is performed to extract a scale factor from data, to correct the light-flavour jet mistagging efficiency in Monte Carlo simulations, while simultaneously correcting the b-jet efficiency. With this procedure, uncertainties coming from the modeling of jets from heavy-flavour hadrons are considerably lower than in previous calibrations of the mistagging scale factors, where they were dominant. The scale factors obtained in this calibration are consistent with unity within uncertainties.

Abstract: Cross-sections for the production of a Z boson in association with two photons are measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) recorded by the ATLAS experiment during Run 2 of the LHC. The measurements use the electron and muon decay channels of the Z boson, and a fiducial phase-space region where the photons are not radiated from the leptons. The integrated Z(-> ll)gamma gamma cross-section is measured with a precision of 12% and differential cross-sections are measured as a function of six kinematic variables of the Z gamma gamma system. The data are compared with predictions from MC event generators which are accurate to up to next-to-leading order in QCD. The cross-section measurements are used to set limits on the coupling strengths of dimension-8 operators in the framework of an effective field theory.

Abstract: In a special run of the LHC with beta star=2.5 km, proton-proton elastic-scattering events were recorded at root s=13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 340 μb(-1) using the ALFA subdetector of ATLAS in 2016. The elastic cross section was measured differentially in the Mandelstam t variable in the range from -t=2.5 center dot 10(-4) GeV2 to -t=0.46 GeV2 using 6.9 million elastic-scattering candidates. This paper presents measurements of the total cross section sigma(tot), parameters of the nuclear slope, and the rho-parameter defined as the ratio of the real part to the imaginary part of the elastic-scattering amplitude in the limit t -> 0. These parameters are determined from a fit to the differential elastic cross section using the optical theorem and different parameterizations of the t-dependence. The results for sigma(tot) and rho are sigma(tot) (PP -> X ) =104.7 +/- 1.1 mob , rho=0.098 +/- 0.011. The uncertainty in sigma(tot) is dominated by the luminosity measurement, and in rho by imperfect knowledge of the detector alignment and by modelling of the nuclear amplitude.

Abstract: A search for heavy right-handed Majorana or Dirac neutrinos N-R and heavy right-handed gauge bosons W-R is performed in events with energetic electrons or muons, with the same or opposite electric charge, and energetic jets. The search is carried out separately for topologies of clearly separated final-state products (“resolved” channel) and topologies with boosted final states with hadronic and/or leptonic products partially overlapping and reconstructed as a large-radius jet (“boosted” channel). The events are selected from pp collision data at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) collected by the ATLAS detector at root s = 13 TeV. No significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed. The results are interpreted within the theoretical framework of a left-right symmetric model, and lower limits are set on masses in the heavy right-handed W-R boson and N-R plane. The excluded region extends to about m(W-R) = 6.4 TeV for both Majorana and Dirac N-R neutrinos at m(N-R) < 1 TeV. N-R with masses of less than 3.5 (3.6) TeV are excluded in the electron (muon) channel at m(W-R) = 4.8 TeV for the Majorana neutrinos, and limits of m(N-R) up to 3.6 TeV for m(W-R) = 5.2 (5.0) TeV in the electron (muon) channel are set for the Dirac neutrinos. These constitute the most stringent exclusion limits to date for the model considered.

Abstract: The inclusive Higgs boson production cross-section is measured in the di-photon and the ZZ -> 4l decay channels using 31.4 and 29.0 fb-1 of pp collision data respectively, collected with the ATLAS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of <mml:msqrt>s</mml:msqrt>=13.6 TeV. To reduce the model dependence, the measurement in each channel is restricted to a particle-level phase space that closely matches the channel's detector-level kinematic selection, and it is corrected for detector effects. These measured fiducial cross-sections are sigma fid,gamma gamma= 76-13+14</mml:msubsup> fb, and sigma fid,4l= 2.80<mml:mspace width=“0.166667em”></mml:mspace>+/- <mml:mspace width=“0.166667em”></mml:mspace>0.74 fb, in agreement with the corresponding Standard Model predictions of 67.6 +/- 3.7 fb and 3.67 +/- 0.19 fb. Assuming Standard Model acceptances and branching fractions for the two channels, the fiducial measurements are extrapolated to the full phase space yielding total cross-sections of sigma (pp -> H)=67-11+12 pb and 46 +/- 12 pb at 13.6 TeV from the di-photon and ZZ -> 4l measurements respectively. The two measurements are combined into a total cross-section measurement of sigma (pp -> H)=58.2 +/- 8.7 pb, to be compared with the Standard Model prediction of sigma <mml:msub>(pp -> H)SM=59.9 +/- 2.6 pb.
