Abstract |
The mass of the Higgs boson is measured in the H -> gamma gamma decay channel, exploiting the high resolution of the invariant mass of photon pairs reconstructed from the decays of Higgs bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy root s = 13 TeV. The dataset was collected between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb(-1). The measured value of the Higgs boson mass is 125.17 +/- 0.11 (stat.) +/- 0.09 (syst.) GeV and is based on an improved energy scale calibration for photons, whose impact on the measurement is about four times smaller than in the previous publication. A combination with the corresponding measurement using 7 and 8 TeV pp collision ATLAS data results in a Higgs boson mass measurement of 125.22 +/- 0.11 (stat.) +/- 0.09 (syst.) GeV. With an uncertainty of 1.1 per mille, this is currently the most precise measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson from a single decay channel. |

Abstract |
Reduced transition probabilities have been extracted between excited, yrast states in the N = Z + 2 nucleus Pd-94. The transitions of interest were observed following decays of the I-pi = 14(+), E-x = 2129-keV isomeric state, which was populated following the projectile fragmentation of a Xe-124 primary beam at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum fur Schwerionenforschung accelerator facility as part of FAIR Phase-0. Experimental information regarding the reduced E2 transition strengths for the decays of the yrast 8(+) and 6(+) states was determined following isomer-delayed E-gamma 1 – E-gamma 2 – Delta T-2,T-1 coincidence method, using the LaBr3(Ce)-based FATIMA fast-timing coincidence gamma-ray array, which allowed direct determination of lifetimes of states in Pd-94 using the Generalized Centroid Difference (GCD) method. The experimental value for the half-life of the yrast 8(+) state of 755(106) ps results in a reduced transition probability of B(E2:8(+)-> 6(+)) = 205(-25)(+34) e(2) fm(4), which enables a precise verification of shell-model calculations for this unique system, lying directly between the N = Z line and the N = 50 neutron shell closure. The determined B(E2) value provides an insight into the purity of (g(9/2))(n) configurations in competition with admixtures from excitations between the (lower) N = 3pf and (higher) N = 4gds orbitals for the first time. The results indicate weak collectivity expected for near-zero quadrupole deformation and an increasing importance of the T = 0 proton-neutron interaction at N = 48. |

Abstract |
We recall that the chiral unitary approach for the interaction of pseudoscalar mesons with the baryons of the decuplet predicts two states for the Xi(1820) resonance, one with a narrow width and the other one with a large width. We contrast this fact with the recent BESIII measurement of the K- Lambda mass distribution in the psi(3686) decay to K- Lambda Xi(+), which demands a width much larger than the average of the PDG, and show how the consideration of the two Xi(1820) states provides a natural explanation to the experimental data. |

Abstract |
The interest in using continuous monolithic crystals in positron emission tomography (PET) has grown in the last years. Coupled to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), the detector can combine high sensitivity and high resolution, the two main factors to be maximized in a positron emission tomograph. In this work, the position determination capability of a detector comprised of a 12 x 12 x 10 mm(3) LYSO crystal coupled to an 8 x 8-pixel array of SiPMs is evaluated. The 3D interaction position of.-rays is estimated using an analytical model of the light distribution including reflections on the facets of the crystal. Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to evaluate different crystal reflectors and geometries. The method has been characterized and applied to different cases. Intrinsic resolution obtained with the position estimation method used in this work, applied to experimental data, achieves sub-millimetre resolution values. Average resolution over the detector surface for 5 mm thick crystal is similar to 0.9 mm FWHM and similar to 1.2 mm FWHM for 10 mm thick crystal. Depth of interaction resolution is close to 2 mm FWHM in both cases, while the FWTM is similar to 5.3 mm for 5 mm thick crystal and similar to 9.6 mm for 10 mm thick crystal. |

Abstract |
In order to exploit the advantages of ion-beam therapy in a clinical setting, delivery verification techniques are necessary to detect deviations from the planned treatment. Efforts are currently oriented towards the development of devices for real-time range monitoring. Among the different detector concepts proposed, Compton cameras are employed to detect prompt gammas and represent a valid candidate for real-time range verification. We present the first on-beam test of MACACO, a Compton telescope (multi-layer Compton camera) based on lanthanum bromide crystals and silicon photo-multipliers. The Compton telescope was first characterized through measurements and Monte Carlo simulations. The detector linearity was measured employing Na-22 and Am-Be sources, obtaining about 10% deviation from linearity at 3.44 MeV. A spectral image reconstruction algorithm was tested on synthetic data. Point-like sources emitting gamma rays with energy between 2 and 7 MeV were reconstructed with 3-5 mm resolution. The two-layer Compton telescope was employed to measure radiation emitted from a beam of 150 MeV protons impinging on a cylindrical PMMA target. Bragg-peak shifts were achieved via adjustment of the PMMA target location and the resulting measurements used during image reconstruction. Reconstructed Bragg peak profiles proved sufficient to observe peak-location differences within 10 mm demonstrating the potential of the MACACO Compton Telescope as a monitoring device for ion-beam therapy. |
