Title Quantum numbers of the X(3872) state and orbital angular momentum in its rho(0)J/psi decay Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication (down) Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 92 Issue 1 Pages 011102 - 9pp
Keywords
Abstract Angular correlations in B+ -> X(3872)K+ decays, with X(3872) -> rho(0)J/psi, rho(0) -> pi(+)pi(-) and J/psi -> pi(+)pi(-), are used to measure orbital angular momentum contributions and to determine the J(PC) value of the X(3872) meson. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) of proton- proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. This determination, for the first time performed without assuming a value for the orbital angular momentum, confirms the quantum numbers to be J(PC) = 1(++). The X(3872) is found to decay predominantly through an S wave and an upper limit of 4% at 95% C.L. is set on the D-wave contribution.

Title Study of W boson production in association with beauty and charm Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication (down) Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 92 Issue 5 Pages 052001 - 16pp
Keywords
Abstract The associated production of a W boson with a jet originating from either a light parton or heavy-flavor quark is studied in the forward region using proton-proton collisions. The analysis uses data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1.0 and 2.0 fb(-1) collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The W bosons are reconstructed using the W -> μnu decay and muons with a transverse momentum, p(T), larger than 20 GeV in the pseudorapidity range 2.0 < eta < 4.5. The partons are reconstructed as jets with p(T) > 20 GeV and 2.2 < eta < 4.2. The sum of the muon and jet momenta must satisfy p(T) > 20 GeV. The fraction of W + jet events that originate from beauty and charm quarks is measured, along with the charge asymmetries of the W+b and W+c production cross sections. The ratio of the W + jet to Z + jet production cross sections is also measured using the Z -> μμdecay. All results are in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

Title Measurement of the branching fraction ratio B(B-c(+) -> psi(2S)pi(+))/B(B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+)) Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication (down) Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 92 Issue 7 Pages 072007 - 10pp
Keywords
Abstract Using pp collision data collected by LHCb at center-of-mass energies root s = 7 TeV and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1), the ratio of the branching fraction of the B-c(+) -> psi(2S)pi(+) decay relative to that of the B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+) decay is measured to be 0.268 +/- 0.032(stat) +/- 0.007(syst) +/- 0.006(BF). The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the J/psi -> mu(+)mu(-) and psi(2S) -> mu(+)mu(-) decays. This measurement is consistent with the previous LHCb result, and the statistical uncertainty is halved.

Title Study of the e(+)e(-) -> K+K- reaction in the energy range from 2.6 to 8.0 GeV Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication (down) Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 92 Issue 7 Pages 072008 - 16pp
Keywords
Abstract The e(+)e(-) -> K+K- cross section and charged-kaon electromagnetic form factor are measured in the e(+)e(-) center-of-mass energy range (E) from 2.6 to 8.0 GeV using the initial-state radiation technique with an undetected photon. The study is performed using 469 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II2 e(+)e(-) collider at center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV. The form factor is found to decrease with energy faster than 1/E-2 and approaches the asymptotic QCD prediction. Production of the K+K- final state through the J/psi and psi(2S) intermediate states is observed. The results for the kaon form factor are used together with data from other experiments to perform a model-independent determination of the relative phases between electromagnetic (single-photon) and strong amplitudes in J/psi and psi(2S). K+K- decays. The values of the branching fractions measured in the reaction e(+)e(-) -> K+K- are shifted relative to their true values due to interference between resonant and nonresonant amplitudes. The values of these shifts are determined to be about +/- 5% for the J/psi meson and +/- 15% for the psi(2S) meson.

Title Measurement of initial-state-final-state radiation interference in the processes e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-)gamma and e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication (down) Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 92 Issue 7 Pages 072015 - 29pp
Keywords
Abstract Charge asymmetry in the processes e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-)gamma and e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma is measured using 232 fb(-1) of data collected with the BABAR detector at e(+)e(-) center-of-mass energies near 10.58 GeV. An observable is introduced and shown to be very robust against detector asymmetries while keeping a large sensitivity to the physical charge asymmetry that results from the interference between initial-and final-state radiation (FSR). The asymmetry is determined as a function of the invariant mass of the final-state tracks from production threshold to a few GeV/c(2). It is compared to the expectation from QED for e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-)gamma, and from theoretical models for e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma. A clear interference pattern is observed in e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma, particularly in the vicinity of the f(2)(1270) resonance. The inferred rate of lowest-order FSR production is consistent with the QED expectation for e(+)e(-) -> mu(+)mu(-)gamma, and is negligibly small for e(+)e(-) -> pi(+)pi(-)gamma.

Title Search for the rare decays B-0 -> J/psi gamma and B-s(0)-> J/psi gamma Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication (down) Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 92 Issue 11 Pages 112002 - 9pp
Keywords
Abstract A search for the rare decay of a B-0 or B-s(0) meson into the final state J/psi gamma is performed, using data collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at root s = 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1). The observed number of signal candidates is consistent with a background-only hypothesis. Branching fraction values larger than 1.5 x 10(-6) for the B-0 -> J/psi gamma decay mode are excluded at 90% confidence level. For the B-s(0) -> J/psi gamma decay mode, branching fraction values larger than 7.3 x 10(-6) are excluded at 90% confidence level; this is the first branching fraction limit for this decay.

Title Study of B- -> DK-pi(+)pi(-) and B- -> D pi(-)pi(+)pi(-) decays and determination of the CKM angle gamma Type Journal Article

Abstract We report a study of the suppressed B- -> DK-pi(+)pi(-) and favored B- -> D pi(-)pi(+)pi(-) decays, where the neutral D meson is detected through its decays to the K--/+pi(+/-) and CP -even K+K- and pi(+)pi(-) final states. The measurement is carried out using a proton-proton collision data sample collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1). We observe the first significant signals in the CP – even final states of the D meson for both the suppressed B- -> DK-pi(+)pi(-) and favored B- -> D pi(-)pi(+)pi(-) modes, as well as in the doubly Cabibbo suppressed D -> K+pi(-) final state of the B- -> D pi(-)pi(+)pi(-) decay. Evidence for the suppressed decay B- -> DK-pi(+)pi(-), with D -> K+pi(-), is also presented. From the observed yields in the B- -> DK-pi(+)pi(-), B- -> D pi(-)pi(+)pi(-) and their charge conjugate decay modes, the most probable value of the weak phase gamma corresponds to gamma = (74(-19)(+20))degrees. This is one of the most precise single-measurement determinations of gamma to date.

Title Collins asymmetries in inclusive charged KK and K pi pairs produced in e(+)e(-) annihilation Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication (down) Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D

Abstract We present measurements of Collins asymmetries in the inclusive process e(+)e(-) -> h(1)h(2)X, h(1)h(2) = KK, K pi, pi pi, at the center-of-mass energy of 10.6 GeV, using a data sample of 468 fb(-1) collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II B factory at SLAC National Accelerator Center. Considering hadrons in opposite thrust hemispheres of hadronic events, we observe clear azimuthal asymmetries in the ratio of unlike sign to like sign, and unlike sign to all charged h(1)h(2) pairs, which increase with hadron energies. The K pi asymmetries are similar to those measured for the pi pi pairs, whereas those measured for high-energy KK pairs are, in general, larger.

Title Model-independent confirmation of the Z(4430)(-) state Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication (down) Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 92 Issue 11 Pages 112009 - 15pp
Keywords
Abstract The decay B-0 -> psi(2S)K+pi(-) is analyzed using 3 fb(-1) of pp collision data collected with the LHCb detector. A model-independent description of the psi(2S)pi mass spectrum is obtained, using as input the K pi mass spectrum and angular distribution derived directly from data, without requiring a theoretical description of resonance shapes or their interference. The hypothesis that the psi(2S)pi mass spectrum can be described in terms of K pi reflections alone is rejected with more than 8 sigma significance. This provides confirmation, in a model-independent way, of the need for an additional resonant component in the mass region of the Z(4430)(-) exotic state.

Abstract We study the processes gamma gamma -> (KSK +/-)-K-0 pi(-/+) and gamma gamma -> K+K-pi(0) using a data sample of 519 fb(-1) recorded with the BABAR detector operating at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider at center-of-mass energies at and near the Upsilon(nS) (n = 2, 3, 4) resonances. We observe eta(c) decays to both final states and perform Dalitz plot analyses using a model-independent partial wave analysis technique. This allows a model-independent measurement of the mass-dependence of the I = 1/2 K pi S-wave amplitude and phase. A comparison between the present measurement and those from previous experiments indicates similar behavior for the phase up to a mass of 1.5 GeV/c(2). In contrast, the amplitudes show very marked differences. The data require the presence of a new a(0)(1950) resonance with parameters m = 1931 +/- 14 +/- 22 MeV/c(2) and Gamma = 271 +/- 22 +/- 29 MeV.
