Abstract: The LHCb detector is a forward spectrometer at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The experiment is designed for precision measurements of CP violation and rare decays of beauty and charm hadrons. In this paper the performance of the various LHCb sub-detectors and the trigger system are described, using data taken from 2010 to 2012. It is shown that the design criteria of the experiment have been met. The excellent performance of the detector has allowed the LHCb collaboration to publish a wide range of physics results, demonstrating LHCb's unique role, both as a heavy flavour experiment and as a general purpose detector in the forward region.

Abstract: We prove that adiabatic regularization and DeWitt-Schwinger point-splitting provide the same result when renormalizing expectation values of the stress-energy tensor for spin-1/2 fields. This generalizes the equivalence found for scalar fields, which is here recovered in a different way. We also argue that the coincidence limit of the DeWitt-Schwinger proper time expansion of the two-point function agrees exactly with the analogous expansion defined by the adiabatic regularization method at any order (for both scalar and spin-1/2 fields). We also illustrate the power of the adiabatic method to compute higher order DeWitt coefficients in Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker Universes.

Abstract: The level structure of the neutron-rich Cu-69, Cu-71, and Cu-73 isotopes has been investigated by means of multinucleon transfer reactions. The experiment was performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using the AGATA Demonstrator array coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. Lifetimes of excited states in Cu nuclei were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. The resulting electromagnetic matrix elements for transitions from excited states in Cu-69,Cu-71,Cu-73 nuclei are used to assess the collective or single-particle character of these states. The results are compared with predictions of large-scale shell-model calculations, giving further insight into the evolution of the proton pf shell as neutrons fill the 1g(9/2) orbital.

Abstract: We present Dalitz plot analyses for the decays of B mesons to (D-DK+)-K-0 and (D) over bar (DK+)-D-0-K-0. We report the observation of the D*(s1)(2700)(+) resonance in these two channels and obtain measurements of the mass M(D*(s1)(2700)(+)) = 2699(-7)(+14) MeV/c(2) and of the width Gamma(D*(s1)(2700)(+)) = 127(-19)(+24) MeV, including statistical and systematic uncertainties. In addition, we observe an enhancement in the (DK+)-K-0 invariant mass around 2350-2500 MeV/c(2) in both decays B-0 -> (D-DK+)-K-0 and B+ -> (D) over bar (DK+)-D-0-K-0, which we are not able to interpret. The results are based on 429 fb(-1) of data containing 471 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

Abstract: The T2K experiment has performed a search for nu(e) disappearance due to sterile neutrinos using 5.9 x 10(20) protons on target for a baseline of 280 m in a neutrino beam peaked at about 500 MeV. A sample of nu(e) CC interactions in the off-axis near detector has been selected with a purity of 63% and an efficiency of 26%. The p-value for the null hypothesis is 0.085 and the excluded region at 95% C.L. is approximately sin(2)2 theta(ee) > 0.3 for Delta m(eff)(2) > 7 eV(2)/c(4).
