Abstract A measurement of the B-0(s) -> J/psi phi decay parameters using 80.5 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the ATLAS detector from 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC is presented. The measured parameters include the CP-violating phase phi(s), the width difference Delta Gamma(s) between the B-s(0) meson mass eigenstates and the average decay width Gamma(s). The values measured for the physical parameters are combined with those from 19.2 fb(-1) of 7 and 8 TeV data, leading to the following: phi(s) = -0.087 +/- 0.036 (stat.) +/- 0.021 (syst.) rad Delta Gamma(s) = 0.0657 +/- 0.0043 (stat.) +/- 0.0037 (syst.) ps(-1) Gamma(s) = 0.6703 +/- 0.0014 (stat.) +/- 0.0018 (syst.) ps(-1) Results for phi(s) and Delta Gamma(s) are also presented as 68% confidence level contours in the phi(s)-Delta Gamma(s) plane. Furthermore the transversity amplitudes and corresponding strong phases are measured. phi(s) and Delta Gamma(s) measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

Title Test of the universality of τ and μ lepton couplings in W-boson decays with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article

Keywords
Abstract The standard model of particle physics encapsulates our best current understanding of physics at the smallest scales. A fundamental axiom of this theory is the universality of the couplings of the different generations of leptons to the electroweak gauge bosons. The measurement of the ratio of the decay rate of W bosons to t leptons and muons, R(tau/mu), constitutes an important test of this axiom. Using 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, we report a measurement of this quantity from di-leptonic tt events where the top quarks decay into a W boson and a bottom quark. We can distinguish muons originating from W bosons and those originating from an intermediate t lepton through the muon transverse impact parameter and differences in the muon transverse momentum spectra. The measured value of R(tau/mu) is 0.992 +/- 0.013 [+/- 0.007(stat) +/- 0.011(syst)] and is in agreement with the hypothesis of universal lepton couplings as postulated in the standard model. This is the only such measurement from the Large Hadron Collider, so far, and obtains twice the precision of previous measurements.

Abstract The total cross section and differential cross sections for the production of B-c(+/-) mesons, times their branching fraction to J/psi pi(+/-), are measured relative to those for the production of B-+/- mesons, times their branching fraction to J/psi K-+/-. The data used for this study correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb(-1) of pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012 at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV. The measurement is performed differentially in bins of transverse momentum p(T) for 13 GeV < p(T)(B-c(+/-)) < 22 GeV and p(T)(B-c(+/-)) > 22 GeV and in bins of rapidity y for vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.75 and 0.75 < vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.3. The relative cross section times branching fraction for the full range p(T) > 13 GeV and vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.3 is (0.34 +/- 0.04(stat) (+0.06)(-0.02 sys) +/- 0.01(lifetime))%. The differential measurements suggest that the production cross section of the B-c(+/-) decreases faster with p(T) than the production cross section of the B-+/-, while no significant dependence on rapidity is observed.

Title Measurement of single top-quark production in association with a W boson in the single-lepton channel at root s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article

Abstract The production cross-section of a top quark in association with a W boson is measured using proton-proton collisions at root s = 8 TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb(-1,) and was collected in 2012 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The analysis is performed in the single-lepton channel. Events are selected by requiring one isolated lepton (electron or muon) and at least three jets. A neural network is trained to separate the tW signal from the dominant t (t) over bar background. The cross-section is extracted from a binned profile maximum-likelihood fit to a two-dimensional discriminant built from the neural-network output and the invariant mass of the hadronically decaying W boson. The measured crosssection is sigma(tW) = 26 +/- 7 pb, in good agreement with the Standard Model expectation.

Title Exclusive dimuon production in ultraperipheral Pb plus Pb collisions at root S-NN=5.02 TeV with ATLAS Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Physical Review C Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. C

Abstract Exclusive dimuon production in ultraperipheral collisions (UPC), resulting from photon-photon interactions in the strong electromagnetic fields of colliding high-energy lead nuclei, PbPb(gamma gamma) -> mu(+) mu(-) (Pb-(*Pb-)(()*())), is studied using L-int = 0.48 nb(-1) of root S-NN = 5.02 TeV lead-lead collision data at the LHC with the ATLAS detector. Dimuon pairs are measured in the fiducial region p(T,mu) > 4 GeV, vertical bar eta(mu)vertical bar < 2.4, invariant m(mu mu) > 10 GeV, and p(T,mu mu) <2 GeV. The primary background from single-dissociative processes is extracted from the data using a template fitting technique. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of m(mu mu), absolute pair rapidity (vertical bar y(mu mu)vertical bar), scattering angle in the dimuon rest frame (vertical bar cos v*(mu mu)vertical bar), and the colliding photon energies. The total cross section of the UPC gamma gamma -> mu(+) mu(-) process in the fiducial volume is measured to be sigma(mu mu)(fid) = 34.1 +0.3(stat.)+0.7(syst.) μb. Generally good agreement is found with calculations from STARlight, which incorporate the leading-order Breit-Wheeler process with no final-state effects, albeit differences between the measurements and theoretical expectations are observed. In particular, the measured cross sections at larger vertical bar y(mu mu)vertical bar are found to be about 10-20% larger in data than in the calculations, suggesting the presence of larger fluxes of photons in the initial state. Modification of the dimuon cross sections in the presence of forward and/or backward neutron production is also studied and is found to be associated with a harder incoming photon spectrum, consistent with expectations.

Title Measurements of the inclusive and differential production cross sections of a top-quark-antiquark pair in association with a Z boson at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article

Keywords
Abstract Measurements of both the inclusive and differential production cross sections of a top-quark-antiquark pair in association with a Z boson (t (t) over barZ) are presented. The measurements are performed by targeting final states with three or four isolated leptons (electrons or muons) and are based on root s = 13 TeV proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1), recorded from 2015 to 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The inclusive cross section is measured to be a sigma(t (t) over barZ)= 0.99 +/- 0.05 (stat.) +/- 0.08 (syst.) pb, in agreement with the most precise theoretical predictions. The differential measurements are presented as a function of a number of kinematic variables which probe the kinematics of the t (t) over barZ system. Both absolute and normalised differential crosssection measurements are performed at particle and parton levels for specific fiducial volumes and are compared with theoretical predictions at different levels of precision, based on a chi(2)/ndf and p value computation. Overall, good agreement is observed between the unfolded data and the predictions.

Abstract Jet energy scale and resolution measurements with their associated uncertainties are reported for jets using 36-81 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data with a centre-of-mass energy of root s=13 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Jets are reconstructed using two different input types: topo-clusters formed from energy deposits in calorimeter cells, as well as an algorithmic combination of charged-particle tracks with those topo-clusters, referred to as the ATLAS particle-flow reconstruction method. The anti-kt jet algorithm with radius parameter R=0.4 is the primary jet definition used for both jet types. This result presents new jet energy scale and resolution measurements in the high pile-up conditions of late LHC Run 2 as well as a full calibration of particle-flow jets in ATLAS. Jets are initially calibrated using a sequence of simulation-based corrections. Next, several in situ techniques are employed to correct for differences between data and simulation and to measure the resolution of jets. The systematic uncertainties in the jet energy scale for central jets (|eta|<1.2) vary from 1% for a wide range of high-pT jets (250<pT<2000 GeV), to 5% at very low pT (20 GeV) and 3.5% at very high pT (>2.5 TeV). The relative jet energy resolution is measured and ranges from (24 +/- 1.5)% at 20 GeV to (6 +/- 0.5)% at 300 GeV.

Abstract This paper presents studies of Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using data from the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Data were collected in a special low-luminosity configuration with a minimum-bias trigger and a high-multiplicity track trigger, accumulating integrated luminosities of 151 μb(-1) and 8.4 nb(-1), respectively. The BEC are measured for pairs of like-sign charged particles, each with vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.5, for two kinematic ranges: the first with particle pr > 100 MeV and the second with particle pr > 500 MeV. The BEC parameters, characterizing the source radius and particle correlation strength, are investigated as functions of charged-particle multiplicity (up to 300) and average transverse momentum of the pair (up to 1.5 GeV). The double-differential dependence on charged-particle multiplicity and average transverse momentum of the pair is also studied. The BEC radius is found to be independent of the charged-particle multiplicity for high charged-particle multiplicity (above 100), confirming a previous observation at lower energy. This saturation occurs independent of the transverse momentum of the pair.

Abstract Electroweak symmetry breaking explains the origin of the masses of elementary particles through their interactions with the Higgs field. Besides the measurements of the Higgs boson properties, the study of the scattering of massive vector bosons with spin 1 allows the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking to be probed. Among all processes related to vector-boson scattering, the electroweak production of two jets and a Z-boson pair is a rare and important one. Here we report the observation of this process from proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139fb(-1) recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. We consider two different final states originating from the decays of the Z-boson pair: one containing four charged leptons and another containing two charged leptons and two neutrinos. The hypothesis of no electroweak production is rejected with a statistical significance of 5.7 sigma, and the measured cross-section for electroweak production is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. In addition, we report cross-sections for inclusive production of a Z-boson pair and two jets for the two final states.

Title Measurement of the top-quark mass using a leptonic invariant mass in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article

Keywords Hadron-Hadron Scattering; Top Physics
Abstract A measurement of the top-quark mass (m(t)) in the t (t) over bar -> lepton+ jets channel is presented, with an experimental technique which exploits semileptonic decays of b-hadrons produced in the top-quark decay chain. The distribution of the invariant mass m(l mu) of the lepton, l (with l = e, mu), from the W-boson decay and the muon, mu, originating from the b-hadron decay is reconstructed, and a binned-template profile likelihood fit is performed to extract mt. The measurement is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb(-1) of root s = 13 TeV pp collisions provided by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS detector. The measured value of the top-quark mass is mt = 174.41 +/- 0.39 (stat.) +/- 0.66 (syst.) +/- 0.25 (recoil) GeV, where the third uncertainty arises from changing the Pythia8 parton shower gluon-recoil scheme, used in top-quark decays, to a recently developed setup.
