Abstract |
According to heavy-meson chiral perturbation theory, the vector form factor f+(q(2)) of exclusive semileptonic decay B -> pi l nu is closely related, at least in the soft-pion region ( i.e., q(2) similar to (m(B) – m(pi))(2)), to the strong coupling g(B*B pi) or the normalized coupling (g)over-cap. Combining the precisely measured q2 spectrum of B -> pi l nu decay by the BABAR and Belle collaborations with several parametrizations of the form factor f +(q(2)), we can extract these couplings from the residue of the form factor at the B* pole, which relies on an extrapolation of the form factor from the semileptonic region to the unphysical point q(2) = m(B*)(2). Comparing the extracted values with the other experimental and theoretical estimates, we can test these various form-factor parametrizations, which differ from each other by the amount of physical information embedded in. It is found that the extracted values based on the Becirevic-Kaidalov, Ball-Zwicky and Bourrely-Caprini-Lellouch parametrizations are consistent with each other and roughly in agreement with the other theoretical and lattice estimates, while the Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed ansatz, featured by a spurious, unwanted pole at the threshold of the cut, gives a neatly larger value. |

Abstract |
We propose an A(4) flavor-symmetric SU(3) circle times SU(2) circle times U(1) seesaw model where lepton number is broken spontaneously. A consistent two-zero texture pattern of neutrino masses and mixing emerges from the interplay of type-I and type-II seesaw contributions, with important phenomenological predictions. We show that, if the Majoron becomes massive, such seesaw scenario provides a viable candidate for decaying dark matter, consistent with cosmic microwave background lifetime constraints that follow from current WMAP observations. We also calculate the subleading one-loop-induced decay into photons which leads to a monoenergetic emission line that may be observed in future x-ray missions such as Xenia. |

Abstract |
We study the underlying event in proton-antiproton collisions by examining the behavior of charged particles produced in association with a large transverse momentum jet (similar to 2: 2 fb(-1)) or with a Drell-Yan lepton pair (similar to 2.7 fb(-1)) in the Z-boson mass region [70 < M(pair) < 110 GeV/c(2)] as measured by CDF at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. We use the direction of the lepton pair or the leading jet in each event to define regions of eta-phi space that are sensitive to the modeling of the underlying event. The data are corrected to the particle level to remove detector effects and are then compared with several QCD Monte Carlo models. |

Abstract |
We present an efficient method of reconstructing the parameters of the constrained MSSM from assumed future LHC data, applied both on their own right and in combination with the cosmological determination of the relic dark matter abundance. Focusing on the ATLAS SU3 benchmark point, we demonstrate that our simple Gaussian approximation can recover the values of its parameters remarkably well. We examine two popular noninformative priors and obtain very similar results, although when we use an informative, naturalness-motivated prior, we find some sizeable differences. We show that a further strong improvement in reconstructing the SU3 parameters can by achieved by applying additional information about the relic abundance at the level of WMAP accuracy, although the expected data from Planck will have only a very limited additional impact. Further external data may be required to break some remaining degeneracies. We argue that the method presented here is applicable to a wide class of low-energy effective supersymmetric models, as it does not require one to deal with purely experimental issues, e.g., detector performance, and has the additional advantages of computational efficiency. Furthermore, our approach allows one to distinguish the effect of the model's internal structure and of the external data on the final parameters constraints. |

Abstract |
The total and differential cross sections for associated strangeness production in the pp -> pK(+) K(-)p and pp -> pK(+)pi(0)Sigma(0) reactions have been studied in a unified approach using an effective Lagrangian model. It is assumed that both the K(-)p and pi(0)Sigma(0) final states originate from the decay of the Lambda(1405) that was formed in the production chain pp -> p(N*(1535). K+ Lambda(1405)). The available experimental data are well reproduced, especially the ratio of the two total cross sections, which is much less sensitive to the particular model of the entrance channel. The significant coupling of the N*(1535) to Lambda(1405)K is further evidence for large ss components in the quark wave function of the N*(1535). |

Abstract |
We use a theoretical model of the gamma d --> K+K- np reaction adapted to the experiment done at LEPS where a peak was observed and associated with the Theta(+)(1540) pentaquark. The study shows that the method used in the experiment to assign momenta to the undetected proton and neutron, together with the chosen cuts, necessarily creates an artificial broad peak in the assumed K(+)n invariant mass in the region of the claimed Theta(+)(1540), such that the remaining strength seen for the experimental peak is compatible with a fluctuation of 2 sigma significance. |

Abstract |
In a sample of 467 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP- II collider at SLAC we have observed the decay (B) over bar (0) -> Lambda(+)(c)(p) over bar pi(0) and measured the branching fraction to be (1.94 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.50 x 10(-4), where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and the uncertainty on the Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-)pi(+) branching fraction, respectively. We determine an upper limit of 1.5 x 10(-6) at 90% C.L. for the product branching fraction B((B) over bar (0) -> Sigma(+)(c) (2455)(p) over bar) x B(Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-) pi(+)). Furthermore, we observe an enhancement at the threshold of the invariant mass of the baryon- antibaryon pair. |

Abstract |
To satisfy the world's constantly increasing demand for energy, a suitable mix of different energy sources has to be devised. In this scenario, an important role could be played by nuclear energy, provided that major safety, waste and proliferation issues affecting current nuclear reactors are satisfactorily addressed. To this purpose, a large effort has been under way for a few years towards the development of advanced nuclear systems with the aim of closing the fuel cycle. Generation IV reactors, with full or partial waste recycling capability, accelerator driven systems, as well as new fuel cycles are the main options being investigated. The design of advanced systems requires improvements in basic nuclear data, such as cross-sections for neutron-induced reactions on actinides. In this paper, the main concepts of advanced reactor systems are described, together with the related needs of new and accurate nuclear data. The present activity in this field at the neutron facility n_TOF at CERN is discussed. |

Abstract |
We study the anomalous electromagnetic pion form factor F-pi 0 gamma*gamma* with a set of holographic models. By comparing with the measured value of the linear slope, some of these models can be ruled out. From the remaining models, we obtain predictions for the low-energy quadratic slope parameters of F-pi 0 gamma*gamma* , currently out of experimental reach but testable in the near future. We find it particularly useful to encode this low-energy information in a form factor able to satisfy also QCD short-distance constraints. We choose the form factor introduced by D'Ambrosio, Isidori, and Portoles in kaon decays, which has the right short distance for a particular value of the quadratic slope, which is later shown to be compatible with our holographic predictions. We then turn to a determination of the (dominant) pion exchange diagram in the hadronic light by light scattering contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We quantify the theoretical uncertainty in (g – 2)(mu) coming from the different input we use: QCD short distances, experimental input, and low-energy holographic predictions. We also test the pion-pole approximation. Our final result is a(mu)(pi 0) = 6: 54(25) x 10(-10), where the error is driven by the linear slope of F-pi 0 gamma*gamma* , soon to be measured with precision at KLOE-2. Our numerical analysis also indicates that large values of the magnetic susceptibility chi 0 are disfavored, therefore pointing at a mild effect from the pion off-shellness. However, in the absence of stronger bounds on chi 0, an additional (10-15)% systematic uncertainty on the previous value for a(mu)(pi 0) cannot be excluded. |

Abstract |
We report measurements of the polarization of W bosons from top-quark decays using 2.7 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions collected by the CDF II detector. Assuming a top-quark mass of 175 GeV/c(2), three measurements are performed. A simultaneous measurement of the fraction of longitudinal (f(0)) and right-handed (f(0)) W bosons yields the model- independent results f(0) =0. 88 +/- 0.11(stat) +/- 0.06(syst) and f(+) = 0.15 +/- 0.07(stat) +/- 0.06(syst) with a correlation coefficient of -0.59. A measurement of f(0) [f(+)] constraining f(+) [f(0)] to its standard model value of 0.0 [0.7] yields f(0) 0.70 + 0.07(stat) +/- 0.04(syst) [f(+) – 0.01 +/- 0.02(stat) +/- 0.05(syst)]. All these results are consistent with standard model expectations. We achieve the single most precise measurements of f(0) for both the model- independent and modeldependent determinations. |
