Abstract: The jet energy scale, jet energy resolution, and their systematic uncertainties are measured for jets reconstructed with the ATLAS detector in 2012 using proton-proton data produced at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 20 fb-1. Jets are reconstructed from clusters of energy depositions in the ATLAS calorimeters using the anti-kt algorithm. A jet calibration scheme is applied in multiple steps, each addressing specific effects including mitigation of contributions from additional proton-proton collisions, loss of energy in dead material, calorimeter non-compensation, angular biases and other global jet effects. The final calibration step uses several in situ techniques and corrects for residual effects not captured by the initial calibration. These analyses measure both the jet energy scale and resolution by exploiting the transverse momentum balance in gamma + jet, Z + jet, dijet, and multijet events. A statistical combination of these measurements is performed. In the central detector region, the derived calibration has a precision better than 1% for jets with transverse momentum 150 GeV<pT< 1500 GeV, and the relative energy resolution is (8.4 +/- 0.6)% for pT=100 GeV and (23 +/- 2)% for pT=20 GeV. The calibration scheme for jets with radius parameter R=1.0, for which jets receive a dedicated calibration of the jet mass, is also discussed.

Abstract: The integrated fiducial cross-section and unfolded differential jet mass spectrum of high transverse momentum Z -> b (b) over bar decays are measured in Z gamma events in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV. The data analysed were collected between 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb(-1). Photons are required to have a transverse momentum p(T) > 175 GeV. The Z -> b (b) over bar decay is reconstructed using a jet with p(T) > 200 GeV, found with the anti-k(t) R = 1.0 jet algorithm, and groomed to remove soft and wide-angle radiation and to mitigate contributions from the underlying event and additional proton-proton collisions. Two different but related measurements are performed using two jet grooming definitions for reconstructing the Z -> b (b) over bar decay: trimming and soft drop. These algorithms differ in their experimental and phenomenological implications regarding jet mass reconstruction and theoretical precision. To identify Zbosons, b-tagged R = 0.2 track-jets matched to the groomed large-R calorimeter jet are used as a proxy for the b-quarks. The signal yield is determined from fits of the data-driven background templates to the different jet mass distributions for the two grooming methods. Integrated fiducial cross-sections and unfolded jet mass spectra for each grooming method are compared with leading-order theoretical predictions. The results are found to be in good agreement with Standard Model expectations within the current statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Abstract: This letter reports the observation of photon-induced production of W-boson pairs, gamma gamma -> WW. The analysis uses 139 fb(-1) of LHC proton-proton collision data taken at root s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment during the years 2015-2018. The measurement is performed selecting one electron and one muon, corresponding to the decay of the diboson system as WW -> e(+/-)nu mu(-/+)nu final state. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with a significance of well above 5 standard deviations consistent with the expectation from Monte Carlo simulation. A cross section for the gamma gamma -> WW process of 3.13 +/- 0.31(stat.) +/- 0.28(syst.) fb is measured in a fiducial volume close to the acceptance of the detector, by requiring an electron and a muon of opposite signs with large dilepton transverse momentum and exactly zero additional charged particles. This is found to be in agreement with the Standard Model prediction.

Abstract: The associated production of a Higgs boson with a W or Z boson decaying into leptons and where the Higgs boson decays to a b (b) over bar pair is measured in the high vector-boson transverse momentum regime, above 250 GeV, with the ATLAS detector. The analysed data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1), were collected in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV. The measured signal strength, defined as the ratio of the measured signal yield to that predicted by the Standard Model, is 0.72(-0.36)(+0.39) corresponding to an observed (expected) significance of 2.1 (2.7) standard deviations. Cross-sections of associated production of a Higgs boson decaying into b quark pairs with a W or Z gauge boson, decaying into leptons, are measured in two exclusive vector boson transverse momentum regions, 250-400 GeV and above 400 GeV, and interpreted as constraints on anomalous couplings in the framework of a Standard Model effective field theory.

Abstract: The total cross section and differential cross sections for the production of B-c(+/-) mesons, times their branching fraction to J/psi pi(+/-), are measured relative to those for the production of B-+/- mesons, times their branching fraction to J/psi K-+/-. The data used for this study correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb(-1) of pp collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012 at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV. The measurement is performed differentially in bins of transverse momentum p(T) for 13 GeV < p(T)(B-c(+/-)) < 22 GeV and p(T)(B-c(+/-)) > 22 GeV and in bins of rapidity y for vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.75 and 0.75 < vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.3. The relative cross section times branching fraction for the full range p(T) > 13 GeV and vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.3 is (0.34 +/- 0.04(stat) (+0.06)(-0.02 sys) +/- 0.01(lifetime))%. The differential measurements suggest that the production cross section of the B-c(+/-) decreases faster with p(T) than the production cross section of the B-+/-, while no significant dependence on rapidity is observed.

Abstract: A measurement of the top quark pair-production cross section in the lepton + jets decay channel is presented. It is based on 4.6 fb(-1) of root s = 7 TeV pp collision data collected during 2011 by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. A three-class, multidimensional event classifier based on support vector machines is used to differentiate t (T) over bar events from backgrounds. The tt production cross section is found to be sigma(t (t) over bar) = 168.5 +/- 0.7(stat)(-5.9)(+6.2) (syst)(-3.2)(+3.4) (lumi) pb. The result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction based on QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order.

Abstract: Results of dedicated Monte Carlo simulations of beam-induced background (BIB) in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented and compared with data recorded in 2012. During normal physics operation this background arises mainly from scattering of the 4 TeV protons on residual gas in the beam pipe. Methods of reconstructing the BIB signals in the ATLAS detector, developed and implemented in the simulation chain based on the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation package, are described. The interaction rates are determined from the residual gas pressure distribution in the LHC ring in order to set an absolute scale on the predicted rates of BIB so that they can be compared quantitatively with data. Through these comparisons the origins of the BIB leading to different observables in the ATLAS detectors are analysed. The level of agreement between simulation results and BIB measurements by ATLAS in 2012 demonstrates that a good understanding of the origin of BIB has been reached.

Abstract: A measurement of the B-s(0) decay parameters in the B-s(0) -> J/psi/phi channel using an integrated luminosity of 14.3 fb(-1) collected by the ATLAS detector from 8TeV pp collisions at the LHC is presented. The measured parameters include the CP-violating phase phi(s), the decay width Gamma(s) and the width di ff erence between the mass eigenstates Delta Gamma(s). The values measured for the physical parameters are statistically combined with those from 4.9 fb-1 of 7TeV data, leading to the following: phi(s) = -0.090 +/- 0.078 (stat.) +/- 0.041 (syst.) rad Delta Gamma s = 0.085 +/- 0.011 (stat.) +/- 0.007 (syst.) ps(-1) Gamma(s) = 0.675 +/- 0.003 (stat.) +/- 0.003 (syst:) ps(-1). In the analysis the parameter Delta Gamma(s) is constrained to be positive. Results for phi(s) and Delta Gamma(s) are also presented as 68% and 95% likelihood contours in the phi(s)-Delta Gamma(s) plane. Also measured in this decay channel are the transversity amplitudes and corresponding strong phases. All measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

Abstract: This paper presents the measurement of the relative width difference Delta Gamma(d)/Gamma(d) of the B-0-(B) over bar (0) system using the data collected by the Lambda TLAS experiment at the LHC in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV and root s= 8 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25.2 fb(-1). The value of Delta Gamma(d)/Gamma(d) is obtained by comparing the decay-time distributions of B-0 -> J/Psi K-S and (B) over bar (0) -> J/Psi K*(0)(892) decays. The result is Delta Gamma(d)/Gamma(d) = (-0.1 +/- 1.1 (stat.) +/- 0.9 (syst.)) x 10(-2). Currently, this is the most precise single measurement of AFd/Fd. It agrees with the Standard Model prediction and the measurements by other experiments.

Abstract: Differential cross sections are presented for the prompt and non-prompt production of the hidden-charm states X(3872) and psi(2S), in the decay mode J/psi pi (+) pi (-), measured using 11.4 fb(-1) of pp collisions at root s = 8 Tev by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The ratio of cross-sections X(3872)/psi(2S) is also given, separately for prompt and non-prompt components, as well as the non-prompt fractions of X(3872) and psi(2S). Assuming independent single effective lifetimes for non-prompt X(3872) and psi(2S) production gives separating short- and long-lived contributions, assuming that the short-lived component is due to B (c) decays, gives R (B) = (3.57 +/- 0.33(stat) +/- 0.11(sys)) x 10(-2), with the fraction of non-prompt X(3872) produced via B (c) decays for p (T)(X(3872)) > 10 GeV being (25 +/- 13(stat) +/- 2(sys) +/- 5(spin))%. The distributions of the dipion invariant mass in the X(3872) and psi(2S) decays are also measured and compared to theoretical predictions.
