Title Limits on neutral Higgs boson production in the forward region in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 05 Issue 5 Pages 132 - 13pp
Keywords (up) Hadron-Hadron Scattering; Higgs physics
Abstract Limits on the cross-section times branching fraction for neutral Higgs bosons, produced in p p collisions at root s = 7 TeV, and decaying to two tau leptons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5, are presented. The result is based on a dataset, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb(-1), collected with the LHCb detector. Candidates are identified by reconstructing final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. A model independent upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on a neutral Higgs boson cross-section times branching fraction. It varies from 8.6 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 0.7 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 250 GeV, and is compared to the Standard Model expectation. An upper limit on tan beta in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model is set in the m(h0)(max) scenario. It ranges from 34 for a CP-odd Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 70 for a pseudo-scalar Higgs boson mass of 140 GeV.

Title Evidence for the decay B-c(+) -> J/psi 3 pi(+)2 pi(-) Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 05 Issue 5 Pages 148 - 17pp
Keywords (up) Hadron-Hadron Scattering; QCD; Branching fraction; B physics; Flavor physics
Abstract Evidence is presented for the decay B-c(+) -> J/psi 3 pi(+)2 pi(-) using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1), collected with the LHCb detector. A signal yield of 32 +/- 8 decays is found with a significance of 4.5 standard deviations. The ratio of the branching fraction of the B-c(+) -> J/psi 3 pi(+)2 pi(-) decay to that of the B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+) decay is measured to be B(B-c(+) -> J/psi 3 pi(+)2 pi(-))/B(B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+)) = 1.74 +/- 0.44 +/- 0.24, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Title Measurement of the forward W boson cross-section in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 12 Issue 12 Pages 079 - 25pp
Keywords (up) Hadron-Hadron Scattering; QCD; Forward physics
Abstract A measurement of the inclusive W -> μnu production cross-section using data from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of root s=7 TeV is presented. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of about 1.0 fb(-1) recorded with the LHCb detector. Results are reported for muons with a transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV/c and pseudorapidity between 2.0 and 4.5. The W+ and W- production cross-sections are measured to be sigma(W+->mu+nu)=861.0 +/- 2.0 +/- 11.2 +/- 14.7pb, sigma(W-->mu-(nu)over bar)=675.8 +/- 1.9 +/- 8.8 +/- 11.6pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the luminosity determination. Cross-section ratios and differential distributions as functions of the muon pseudorapidity are also presented. The ratio of W+ to W- cross-sections in the same fiducial kinematic region is determined to be sigma(W+->mu+nu)/sigma(W-->mu-(nu)over bar) = 1.274 +/- 0.005 +/- 0.009, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Abstract The LHCb detector is a forward spectrometer at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The experiment is designed for precision measurements of CP violation and rare decays of beauty and charm hadrons. In this paper the performance of the various LHCb sub-detectors and the trigger system are described, using data taken from 2010 to 2012. It is shown that the design criteria of the experiment have been met. The excellent performance of the detector has allowed the LHCb collaboration to publish a wide range of physics results, demonstrating LHCb's unique role, both as a heavy flavour experiment and as a general purpose detector in the forward region.

Title Measurement of the track reconstruction efficiency at LHCb Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.

Keywords (up) Large detector-systems performance; Pattern recognitio, cluster finding, calibration and fitting methods; Performance of High Energy Physics Detectors
Abstract The determination of track reconstruction efficiencies at LHCb using J/psi -> mu(+)mu(-) decays is presented. Efficiencies above 95% are found for the data taking periods in 2010, 2011, and 2012. The ratio of the track reconstruction efficiency of muons in data and simulation is compatible with unity and measured with an uncertainty of 0.8% for data taking in 2010, and at a precision of 0.4% for data taking in 2011 and 2012. For hadrons an additional 1.4% uncertainty due to material interactions is assumed. This result is crucial for accurate cross section and branching fraction measurements in LHCb.

Title Study of psi(2S) production and cold nuclear matter effects in pPb collisions at root s(NN)=5 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
  Volume 03 Issue 3 Pages 133 - 21pp
Keywords (up) Particle and resonance production; Quarkonium; Relativistic heavy ion physics; Heavy Ion Experiments; Heavy-ion collision
Abstract The production of psi(2S) mesons is studied in dimuon final states using proton-lead (pPb) collision data collected by the LHCb detector. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 nb(-1). The nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of the pPb collisions is root s(NN) = 5 TeV. The measurement is performed using psi(2S) mesons with transverse momentum less than 14 GeV/c and rapidity y in the ranges 1.5 < y < 4.0 and -5.0 < y < -2.5 in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system. The forward-backward production ratio and the nuclear modi fi cation factor are determined for psi(2S) mesons. Using the production cross-section results of psi(2S) and J/psi mesons from b-hadron decays, the b (b) over bar cross-section in pPb collisions at root s(NN) = 5 TeV is obtained.

Abstract Measuring cross-sections at the LHC requires the luminosity to be determined accurately at each centre-of-mass energy root s. In this paper results are reported from the luminosity calibrations carried out at the LHC interaction point 8 with the LHCb detector for root s = 2.76, 7 and 8TeV (proton-proton collisions) and for root s(NN) = 5TeV (proton-lead collisions). Both the “van der Meer scan” and “beam-gas imaging” luminosity calibration methods were employed. It is observed that the beam density profile cannot always be described by a function that is factorizable in the two transverse coordinates. The introduction of a two-dimensional description of the beams improves significantly the consistency of the results. For proton-proton interactions at root s = 8TeV a relative precision of the luminosity calibration of 1.47% is obtained using van der Meer scans and 1.43% using beam-gas imaging, resulting in a combined precision of 1.12%. Applying the calibration to the full data set determines the luminosity with a precision of 1.16%. This represents the most precise luminosity measurement achieved so far at a bunched-beam hadron collider.

Title Identification of beauty and charm quark jets at LHCb Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.
  Volume 10 Issue Pages P06013 - 29pp
Keywords (up) Performance of High Energy Physics Detectors; Analysis and statistical methods
Abstract Identification of jets originating from beauty and charm quarks is important for measuring Standard Model processes and for searching for new physics. The performance of algorithms developed to select b- and c-quark jets is measured using data recorded by LHCb from proton-proton collisions at root s = 7TeV in 2011 and at root s = 8TeV in 2012. The efficiency for identifying a b (c) jet is about 65%(25%) with a probability for misidentifying a light-parton jet of 0.3% for jets with transverse momentum pT > 20GeV and pseudorapidity 2 : 2 < eta < 4.2. The dependence of the performance on the pT and eta of the jet is also measured.

Title B flavour tagging using charm decays at the LHCb experiment Type Journal Article

Keywords (up) Performance of High Energy Physics Detectors; Analysis and statistical methods
Abstract An algorithm is described for tagging the flavour content at production of neutral B mesons in the LHCb experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation of the flavour of a B meson with the charge of a reconstructed secondary charm hadron from the decay of the other b hadron produced in the proton-proton collision. Charm hadron candidates are identified in a number of fully or partially reconstructed Cabibbo-favoured decay modes. The algorithm is calibrated on the self-tagged decay modes B+ -> J/psi K+ and B-0 -> J/psi K*(0) using 3.0fb(-1) of data collected by the LHCb experiment at pp centre-of-mass energies of 7TeV and 8TeV. Its tagging power on these samples of B -> J/psi X decays is (0.30 +/- 0.01 +/- 0.01) %.

Title Study of the production of A(b)(0) and (B)over-bar(0) hadrons in pp collisions and first measurement of the A(b)(0)-> J/psi pK(-) branching fraction Type Journal Article
Year 2016 Publication Chinese Physics C Abbreviated Journal Chin. Phys. C
  Volume 40 Issue 1 Pages 011001 - 16pp
Keywords (up) production cross-section; branching fraction; b hadrons; proton-proton collisions
Abstract The product of the A(b)(0) ((B) over bar (0)) differential production cross-section and the branching fraction of the decay A(b)(0)-> J/psi pK(-) ((B) over bar (0)-> J/psi p (K) over bar*(892)(0)) is measured as a function of the beauty hadron transverse momentum, p(T), and rapidity, y. The kinematic region of the measurements is p(T) <20 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The measurements use a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb(-1) collected by the LHCb detector in pp collisions at centre-of-mass energies root s=7 TeV in 2011 and root s=8 TeV in 2012. Based on previous LHCb results of the fragmentation fraction ratio, f(Ab0)/f(d), the branching fraction of the decay A(b)(0)-> J/psi pK(-) is measured to be B(A(b)(0)-> J/psi pK(-))=(3.17 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.07 +/- 0.34(-0.28)(+0.45))x10(-4) where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, the third is due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the decay (B) over bar (0)-> J/psi p (K) over bar*(892)(0), and the fourth is due to the knowledge of f(Ab0)/f(d). The sum of the asymmetries in the production and decay between A(b)(0) and (A) over bar (0)(b) is also measured as a function of p(T) and y. The previously published branching fraction of A(b)(0)-> J/psi p pi(-), relative to that of A(b)(0)-> J/psi pK(-), is updated. The branching fractions of A(b)(0)-> P-c(+)(-> J/psi p)K- are determined.
