Title Search for third-generation vector-like leptons in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 07 Issue 7 Pages 118 - 49pp
Keywords (down) Beyond Standard Model; Hadron-Hadron Scattering; Tau Physics
Abstract A search for vector-like leptons in multilepton (two, three, or four-or-more electrons plus muons) final states with zero or more hadronic tau-lepton decays is presented. The search is performed using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. To maximize the separation of signal and background, a machine-learning classifier is used. No excess of events is observed beyond the Standard Model expectation. Using a doublet vector-like lepton model, vector-like leptons coupling to third-generation Standard Model leptons are excluded in the mass range from 130 GeV to 900 GeV at the 95% confidence level, while the highest excluded mass is expected to be 970 GeV.

Title Search for long-lived, massive particles in events with displaced vertices and multiple jets in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 06 Issue 6 Pages 200 - 49pp
Keywords (down) Beyond Standard Model; Hadron-Hadron Scattering; Supersymmetry
Abstract A search for long-lived particles decaying into hadrons is presented. The analysis uses 139 fb(-1) of pp collision data collected at root s = 13TeV by the ATLAS detector at the LHC using events that contain multiple energetic jets and a displaced vertex. The search employs dedicated reconstruction techniques that significantly increase the sensitivity to longlived particles decaying in the ATLAS inner detector. Background estimates for Standard Model processes and instrumental effects are extracted from data. The observed event yields are compatible with those expected from background processes. The results are used to set limits at 95% confidence level on model-independent cross sections for processes beyond the Standard Model, and on scenarios with pair-production of supersymmetric particles with long-lived electroweakinos that decay via a small R-parity-violating coupling. The pair-production of electroweakinos with masses below 1.5TeV is excluded for mean proper lifetimes in the range from 0.03 ns to 1 ns. When produced in the decay of m((g) over tilde) – 2.4TeV gluinos, electroweakinos with m((X) over tilde (0)(1)) = 1.5TeV are excluded with lifetimes in the range of 0.02 ns to 4 ns.

Title Search for periodic signals in the dielectron and diphoton invariant mass spectra using 139 fb-1 of pp collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2023 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.

Abstract A search for physics beyond the Standard Model inducing periodic signals in the dielectron and diphoton invariant mass spectra is presented using 139 fb(-1) of root s = 13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Novel search techniques based on continuous wavelet transforms are used to infer the frequency of periodic signals from the invariant mass spectra and neural network classifiers are used to enhance the sensitivity to periodic resonances. In the absence of a signal, exclusion limits are placed at the 95% confidence level in the two-dimensional parameter space of the clockwork gravity model. Model-independent searches for deviations from the background-only hypothesis are also performed.

Title Search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons in final states with two same-sign or three leptons with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2024 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 02 Issue 2 Pages 107 - 55pp
Keywords (down) Beyond Standard Model; Hadron-Hadron Scattering; Lepton Production; Supersymmetry
Abstract A search for pair production of squarks or gluinos decaying via sleptons or weak bosons is reported. The search targets a final state with exactly two leptons with same-sign electric charge or at least three leptons without any charge requirement. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Multiple signal regions are defined, targeting several SUSY simplified models yielding the desired final states. A single control region is used to constrain the normalisation of the WZ + jets background. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model expectation is observed. The results are interpreted in the context of several supersymmetric models featuring R-parity conservation or R-parity violation, yielding exclusion limits surpassing those from previous searches. In models considering gluino (squark) pair production, gluino (squark) masses up to 2.2 (1.7) TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.

Title Search for Higgs bosons decaying into new spin-0 or spin-1 particles in four-lepton final states with the ATLAS detector with 139 fb(-1) of pp collision data at root s=13 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2022 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 03 Issue 3 Pages 041 - 64pp
Keywords (down) Beyond Standard Model; Hadron-Hadron Scattering; Higgs Physics
Abstract Searches are conducted for new spin-0 or spin-1 bosons using events where a Higgs boson with mass 125 GeV decays into four leptons (l = e, mu). This decay is presumed to occur via an intermediate state which contains two on-shell, promptly decaying bosons: H -> XX/ZX 4l, where the new boson X has a mass between 1 and 60 GeV. The search uses pp collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1) at a centre-of-mass energy root s = 13 TeV. The data are found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations. Limits are set on fiducial cross sections and on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to decay into XX/ZX, improving those from previous publications by a factor between two and four. Limits are also set on mixing parameters relevant in extensions of the Standard Model containing a dark sector where X is interpreted to be a dark boson.

Title Search for resonant production of dark quarks in the dijet final state with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2024 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 02 Issue 2 Pages 128 - 35pp
Keywords (down) Beyond Standard Model; Hadron-Hadron Scattering; Dark Matter; Exotics
Abstract This paper presents a search for a new Z' resonance decaying into a pair of dark quarks which hadronise into dark hadrons before promptly decaying back as Standard Model particles. This analysis is based on proton-proton collision data recorded at root s = 13TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb(-1). After selecting events containing large-radius jets with high track multiplicity, the invariant mass distribution of the two highest-transverse-momentum jets is scanned to look for an excess above a data-driven estimate of the Standard Model multijet background. No significant excess of events is observed and the results are thus used to set 95% confidence-level upper limits on the production cross-section times branching ratio of the Z' to dark quarks as a function of the Z' mass for various dark-quark scenarios.

Title Search for pair production of up-type vector-like quarks and for four-top-quark events in final states with multiple b-jets with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 07 Issue 7 Pages 089 - 68pp
Keywords (down) Beyond Standard Model; Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments); vector-like quarks
Abstract A search for pair production of up-type vector-like quarks (T) with a significant branching ratio into a top quark and either a Standard Model Higgs boson or a Z boson is presented. The same analysis is also used to search for four-top-quark production in several new physics scenarios. The search is based on a dataset of pp collisions at root s = 13TeV recorded in 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb(-1). Data are analysed in the lepton+jets final state, characterised by an isolated electron or muon with high transverse momentum, large missing transverse momentum and multiple jets, as well as the jets+E-T(miss) final state, characterised by multiple jets and large missing transverse momentum. The search exploits the high multiplicity of jets identified as originating from b-quarks, and the presence of boosted, hadronically decaying top quarks and Higgs bosons reconstructed as large-radius jets, characteristic of signal events. No significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed, and 95% CL upper limits are set on the production cross sections for the different signal processes considered. These cross-section limits are used to derive lower limits on the mass of a vector-like T quark under several branching ratio hypotheses assuming contributions from T -> Wb, Zt, Ht decays. The 95% CL observed lower limits on the T quark mass range between 0.99TeV and 1.43TeV for all possible values of the branching ratios into the three decay modes considered, significantly extending the reach beyond that of previous searches. Additionally, upper limits on anomalous four-top-quark production are set in the context of an effective field theory model, as well as in an universal extra dimensions model.

Title Reconstruction and identification of boosted di-tau systems in a search for Higgs boson pairs using 13 TeV proton-proton collision data in ATLAS Type Journal Article
Year 2020 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.

Keywords (down) Beyond Standard Model; Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments); Higgs physics; Tau Physics
Abstract In this paper, a new technique for reconstructing and identifying hadronically decaying tau (+)tau (-) pairs with a large Lorentz boost, referred to as the di-tau tagger, is developed and used for the first time in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. A benchmark di-tau tagging selection is employed in the search for resonant Higgs boson pair production, where one Higgs boson decays into a boosted bbbar pair and the other into a boosted tau (+)tau (-) pair, with two hadronically decaying tau -leptons in the final state. Using 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, the efficiency of the di-tau tagger is determined and the background with quark- or gluon-initiated jets misidentified as di-tau objects is estimated. The search for a heavy, narrow, scalar resonance produced via gluon-gluon fusion and decaying into two Higgs bosons is carried out in the mass range 1-3 TeV using the same dataset. No deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed, and 95% confidence-level exclusion limits are set on this model.

Title Search for charged Higgs bosons decaying via H-+/- -> tau(+/-)nu(tau) in the tau plus jets and tau plus lepton final states with 36 fb(-1) of pp collision data recorded at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.
Volume 09 Issue 9 Pages 139 - 48pp
Keywords (down) Beyond Standard Model; Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments); Higgs physics
Abstract Charged Higgs bosons produced either in top-quark decays or in association with a top-quark, subsequently decaying via H-+/-! -> tau(+/-)nu(tau), are searched for in 36.1 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at root s = 13TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector. Depending on whether the top-quark produced together with H-+/- decays hadronically or leptonically, the search targets tau+jets and tau+lepton fi nal states, in both cases with a hadronically decaying tau-lepton. No evidence of a charged Higgs boson is found. For the mass range of m(H)+/- = 90-2000 GeV, upper limits at the 95% con fi dence level are set on the production cross-section of the charged Higgs boson times the branching fraction B (H-+/-->tau(+/-)nu(tau)) in the range 4.2-0.0025 pb. In the mass range 90{160 GeV, assuming the Standard Model cross-section for tit production, this corresponds to upper limits between 0.25% and 0.031% for the branching fraction B (t -> bH(+/-)) x B (H-+/- -> tau(+/-)nu(tau)).

Title Search for the Higgs boson produced in association with a vector boson and decaying into two spin-zero particles in the H -> aa -> 4b channel in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Journal of High Energy Physics Abbreviated Journal J. High Energy Phys.

Keywords (down) Beyond Standard Model; Hadron-Hadron scattering (experiments); Higgs physics
Abstract A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson into a pair of spin-zero particles, H -> aa, where the a-boson decays into b-quarks promptly or with a mean proper lifetime c tau(a) up to 6 mm and has a mass in the range of 20-60GeV, is presented. The search is performed in events where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a W or Z boson, giving rise to a signature of one or two charged leptons (electrons or muons) and multiple jets from b-quark decays. The analysis is based on the dataset of proton-proton collisions at root s = 13TeV recorded in 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36: 1 fb(-1). No significant excess of events above the Standard Model background prediction is observed, and 95% confidence-level upper limits are derived for the production cross-sections for pp -> WH, ZH and their combination, times the branching ratio of the decay chain H -> aa -> 4b. For a-bosons which decay promptly, the upper limit on the combination of cross-sections for WH and ZH times the branching ratio of H -> aa -> 4b ranges from 3.0 pb for m(a) = 20 GeV to 1.3 pb for m(a) = 60 GeV, assuming that the ratio of WH to ZH cros-ssections follows the Standard Model prediction. For a-bosons with longer proper lifetimes, the most stringent limits are 1.8 pb and 0.68 pb, respectively, at c tau(a) similar to 0.4 mm.
