Title Search for Higgs boson decays into pairs of light (pseudo)scalar particles in the gamma gamma jj final state in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
  Volume 782 Issue Pages 750-767
  Keywords (up)
Abstract This Letter presents a search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of new (pseudo) scalar particles, H -> aa, where the a particle has a mass in the range 20-60 GeV, and where one of the a bosons decays into a pair of photons and the other to a pair of gluons. The search is performed in event samples enhanced in vector-boson fusion Higgs boson production by requiring two jets with large invariant mass in addition to the Higgs boson candidate decay products. The analysis is based on the full dataset of pp collisions at root s = 13 TeV recorded in 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.7 fb(-1). The data are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions and an upper limit at the 95% confidence level is placed on the production cross section times the branching ratio for the decay H -> aa -> gamma gamma gg. This limit ranges from 3.1 pb to 9.0 pb depending on the mass of the a boson.

Title Neutron Skin Effects in Mirror Energy Differences: The Case of Mg-23-Na-23 Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Physical Review Letters Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. Lett.
  Volume 121 Issue 3 Pages 032502 - 5pp

Abstract Energy differences between analogue states in the T = 1/2 Mg-23-Na-23 mirror nuclei have been measured along the rotational yrast bands. This allows us to search for effects arising from isospin-symmetrybreaking interactions (ISB) and/or shape changes. Data are interpreted in the shell model framework following the method successfully applied to nuclei in the f(7/2) shell. It is shown that the introduction of a schematic ISB interaction of the same type of that used in the f(7/2) shell is needed to reproduce the data. An alternative novel description, applied here for the first time, relies on the use of an effective interaction deduced from a realistic charge-dependent chiral nucleon-nucleon potential. This analysis provides two important results: (i) The mirror energy differences give direct insight into the nuclear skin; (ii) the skin changes along the rotational bands are strongly correlated with the difference between the neutron and proton occupations of the s(1/2) “halo” orbit.

Title Novel connection between lump-like structures and quantum mechanics Type Journal Article

Abstract This work deals with lump-like structures in models described by a single real scalar field in two-dimensional spacetime. We start with a model that supports lump-like configurations and use the deformation procedure to construct scalar field theories that support both lumps and kinks, with the corresponding stability investigation giving rise to new physical systems. Very interestingly, we find models that support stable topological solutions, with the stability potential being able to support a tower of non-negative bound states, generating distinct families of potentials of current interest to quantum mechanics. We also describe models where the lump-like solutions give rise to stability potentials that have the shape of a double well.

Title Small and hollow magnetic monopoles Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 98 Issue 2 Pages 025017 - 8pp
  Keywords (up)
Abstract We deal with the presence of magnetic monopoles in a non-Abelian model that generalizes the standard 't Hooft-Polyakov model in three spatial dimensions. We investigate the energy density of the static and spherically symmetric solutions to find first order differential equations that solve the equations of motion. The system is further studied and two distinct classes of solutions are obtained, one that can also be described by analytical solutions and is called a small monopole, since it is significantly smaller than the standard 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole. The other type of structure is the hollow monopole, since the energy density is endowed with a hole at its core. The hollow monopole can be smaller or larger than the standard monopole, depending on the value of the parameter that controls the magnetic permeability of the model.

Title Adiabatic expansions for Dirac fields, renormalization, and anomalies Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
  Volume 98 Issue 2 Pages 025016 - 11pp
  Keywords (up)
Abstract We introduce an iterative method to univocally determine the adiabatic expansion of the modes of Dirac fields in spatially homogeneous external backgrounds. We overcome the ambiguities found in previous studies and use this new procedure to improve the adiabatic regularization/renormalization scheme. We provide details on the application of the method for Dirac fields living in a four-dimensional Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker spacetime with a Yukawa coupling to an external scalar field. We check the consistency of our proposal by working out the conformal anomaly. We also analyze a two-dimensional Dirac field in Minkowski space coupled to a homogeneous electric field and reproduce the known results on the axial anomaly. The adiabatic expansion of the modes given here can be used to properly characterize the allowed physical states of the Dirac fields in the above external backgrounds.
