Abstract | This paper reports a detailed study of techniques for identifying boosted, hadronically decaying W bosons using 20.3 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy root s = 8 TeV. A range of techniques for optimising the signal jet mass resolution are combined with various jet substructure variables. The results of these studies in Monte Carlo simulations show that a simple pairwise combination of groomed jet mass and one substructure variable can provide a 50 % efficiency for identifying W bosons with transverse momenta larger than 200 GeV while maintaining multijet background efficiencies of 2-4% for jets with the same transverse momentum. These signal and background efficiencies are confirmed in data for a selection of tagging techniques.

Abstract | In certain extensions of General Relativity, wormholes generated by spherically symmetric electric fields can resolve black hole singularities without necessarily removing curvature divergences. This is shown by studying geodesic completeness, the behavior of time-like congruences going through the divergent region, and by means of scattering of waves off the wormhole. This provides an example of the logical independence between curvature divergences and space-time singularities, concepts very often identified with each other in the literature.

Abstract | The s-wave interaction of (D) over bar Lambda(c), (D) over bar Sigma(c),(D) over bar*Lambda(c), (D) over bar*Sigma(c) and (D) over bar Sigma(c)*, (D) over bar*Sigma(c)*, is studied within a unitary coupled channels scheme with the extended local hidden gauge approach. In addition to the Weinberg-Tomozawa term, several additional diagrams via the pion exchange are also taken into account as box potentials. Furthermore, in order to implement the full coupled channels calculation, some of the box potentials which mix the vector-baryon and pseudoscalar-baryon sectors are extended to construct the effective transition potentials. As a result, we have observed six possible states in several angular momenta. Four of them correspond to two pairs of admixture states, two of (D) over bar Sigma(c) – (D) over bar*Sigma(c) with J – 1/2, and two of (D) over bar Sigma(c)* – (D) over bar*Sigma(c)* with J = 3/2. Moreover, we find a (D) over bar*Sigma(c) resonance which couples to the (D) over bar Lambda(c) channel and one spin degenerated bound state of (D) over bar*Sigma(c)* with J = 1/2, 5/2.

Abstract | We study SO(10). SU(5) and flipped SU(5) GUT models with non-universal soft supersynrimetry-breaking scalar masses, exploring how they are constrained by LIIC super-synrimetry searches and cold dark matter experiments, and how they can be probed and distinguished in future experiments. We find characteristic differences between the-various GUT scenarios, particularly in the coannihilation region, which is very sensitive to changes of parameters. For example, the flipped SU(5) GUT predicts the possibility of (t) over tilde (1-chi) coannihilation, which is absent in the regions of the SO(10) and SU(5) GUT parameter spaces that we study. We use the relic density predictions in different models to determine upper bounds for the neutralino masses, and we find large differences between different GUT models in the sparticle spectra for the same LSP mass, leading to direct connections of distinctive possible experimental measurements with the structure of the GUT group. We find that future LHC searches for generic missing E-T, charginos and stops will be able to constrain the different GUT models in complementary ways, as will the Xenon 1 ton and Darwin dark matter scattering experiments and future FERMI or CIA gamma-ray searches.

Abstract | We provide a classification of generalized CP symmetries preserved by the neutrino mass matrix according to the number of zero entries in the associated transformation matrix. We determine the corresponding constrained form of the lepton mixing matrix, characterized by correlations between the mixing angles and the CP violating phases. We compare with the corresponding restrictions from current neutrino oscillation global fits and show that, in some cases, the Dirac CP phase characterizing oscillations is highly constrained. Implications for current and upcoming long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments T2K, NO nu A, and DUNE, as well as neutrinoless double beta decay experiments are discussed. We also study the cosmological implications of such schemes for leptogenesis.
