Title Confronting SUSY GUT With Dark Matter, Sparticle Spectroscopy and Muon (g – 2) Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Frontiers in Physics Abbreviated Journal Front. Physics
Volume 6 Issue (up) Pages 127 - 9pp
Keywords grand unification; supersymmetry; dark matter; LHC; sparticle spectroscopy
Abstract We explore the implications of LHC and cold dark matter searches for supersymmetric particle mass spectra in two different grand unified models with left-right symmetry, SO(10) and SU(4)(c) x SU(2)(L) x SU(2)(R) (4-2-2). We identify characteristic differences between the two scenarios, which imply distinct correlations between experimental measurements and the particular structure of the GUT group. The gauge structure of 4-2-2 enhances significantly the allowed parameter space as compared to SO(10), giving rise to a variety of coannihilation scenarios compatible with the LHC data, LSP dark matter and the ongoing muon g-2 experiment.

Title The ORNL analysis technique for extracting beta-delayed multi-neutron branching ratios with BRIKEN Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research A Abbreviated Journal Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. A
Volume 911 Issue (up) Pages 79-86
Keywords Neutron detectors; Multi-neutron emission data analysis
Abstract Many choices are available in order to evaluate large radioactive decay networks. There are many parameters that influence the calculated beta-decay delayed single and multi-neutron emission branching fractions. We describe assumptions about the decay model, background, and other parameters and their influence on beta-decay delayed multi-neutron emission analysis. An analysis technique, the ORNL BRIKEN analysis procedure, for determining beta-delayed multi-neutron branching ratios in beta-neutron precursors produced by means of heavy-ion fragmentation is presented. The technique is based on estimating the initial activities of zero, one, and two neutrons occurring in coincidence with an ion-implant and beta trigger. The technique allows one to extract beta-delayed multi-neutron decay branching ratios measured with the He-3 BRIKEN neutron counter. As an example, two analyses of the beta-neutron emitter Cu-77 based on different a priori assumptions are presented along with comparisons to literature values.

Title Comparison between simulated and observed LHC beam backgrounds in the ATLAS experiment at E-beam=4 TeV Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Journal of Instrumentation Abbreviated Journal J. Instrum.

Keywords Accelerator modelling and simulations (multi-particle dynamics; single-particle dynamics); Radiation calculations; Simulation methods and programs
Abstract Results of dedicated Monte Carlo simulations of beam-induced background (BIB) in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented and compared with data recorded in 2012. During normal physics operation this background arises mainly from scattering of the 4 TeV protons on residual gas in the beam pipe. Methods of reconstructing the BIB signals in the ATLAS detector, developed and implemented in the simulation chain based on the FLUKA Monte Carlo simulation package, are described. The interaction rates are determined from the residual gas pressure distribution in the LHC ring in order to set an absolute scale on the predicted rates of BIB so that they can be compared quantitatively with data. Through these comparisons the origins of the BIB leading to different observables in the ATLAS detectors are analysed. The level of agreement between simulation results and BIB measurements by ATLAS in 2012 demonstrates that a good understanding of the origin of BIB has been reached.

Title Search for resonant W Z production in the fully leptonic final state in proton-proton collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Physics Letters B Abbreviated Journal Phys. Lett. B
Volume 787 Issue (up) Pages 68-88
Keywords
Abstract A search for a heavy resonance decaying into WZ in the fully leptonic channel (electrons and muons) is performed. It is based on proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb(-1). No significant excess is observed over the Standard Model predictions and limits are set on the production cross section times branching ratio of a heavy vector particle produced either in quark-antiquark fusion or through vector-boson fusion. Constraints are also obtained on the mass and couplings of a singly charged Higgs boson, in the Georgi-Machacek model, produced through vector-boson fusion. (C) 2018 The Author(s). Title Search for CP violation in Lambda(0)(b)-> pK(- )and Lambda(0)(b) -> p pi(-) decays Type Journal Article

Abstract A search for CP violation in Lambda(0)(b)-> pK(- )and Lambda(0)(b) -> p pi(-) decays is presented using a sample of pp collisions collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0fb(-1). The CP-violating asymmetries are measured to be A(CP)(pK- )( = -0.020 +/- 0.013 +/- 0.019 and A(CP)(p pi-) = -0.035 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.020, and their difference A(CP)(pK-) – A(CP)(p pi-) = 0.014 +/- 0.022 +/- 0.010, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise measurements of such asymmetries to date.
