  Title Revising the f(1)(1420) resonance Type Journal Article

  Abstract We have studied the production and decay of the f(1) (1285) into pi a(0)(980) and K* (K) over bar as a function of the mass of the resonance and find a shoulder around 1400 MeV, tied to a triangle singularity, for the pi a(0)(980) mode, and a peak around 1420 MeV with about 60 MeV width for the K* (K) over bar mode. Both of these features agree with the experimental information on which the f(1)(1420) resonance is based. In addition, we find that if the f(1)(1420) is a genuine resonance, coupling mostly to K* (K) over bar as seen experimentally, one finds unavoidably about a 20% fraction for pi a(0)(980) decay of this resonance, in drastic contradiction with all experiments. Altogether, we conclude that the f(1)(1420) is not a genuine resonance, but the manifestation of the pi a(0)(980) and K* (K) over bar decay modes of the f(1)(1285) at higher energies than the nominal one.

  Abstract The reaction gamma N -> eta N is studied in the high-energy regime (with photon lab energies E gamma(lab) > 4 GeV) using information from the resonance region through the use of finite-energy sum rules. We illustrate how analyticity allows one to map the t dependence of the unknown Regge residue functions. We provide predictions for the energy dependence of the beam asymmetry at high energies.

  Abstract A search for the decays B-c(+) -> J/psi D-(*()0) Kappa(+) and B-c(+) -> J/psi D-(*K)+*(0) is performed with data collected at the LHCb experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1). The decays B-c(+) -> J/psi(DK+)-K-0 and B-c(+) -> J/psi D*K-0(+) are observed for the first time, while first evidence is reported for the B-c(broken vertical bar) -> J/psi D*K-broken vertical bar(*0) and B-c(broken vertical bar) -> J/psi(DK)-K-broken vertical bar*(0) decays. The branching fractions of these decays are determined relative to the B-c(+) -> J/psi pi(+) decay. The B-c(+) mass is measured, using the J/psi(DK+)-K-0 final state, to be 6274.28 +/- 1.40(stat) +/- 0.32(syst) MeV/c(2). This is the most precise single measurement of the B-c(+) mass to date.

  Abstract Flavor symmetries a la Froggatt-Nielsen provide a compelling way to explain the hierarchies of fermionic masses and mixing angles in the Yukawa sector. In supersymmetric (SUSY) extensions of the Standard Model where the mediation of SUSY breaking occurs at scales larger than the breaking of flavor, this symmetry must be respected not only by the Yukawas of the superpotential but also by the soft-breaking masses and trilinear terms. In this work we show that contrary to naive expectations, even starting with completely flavor blind soft breaking in the full theory at high scales, the low-energy sfermion mass matrices and trilinear terms of the effective theory, obtained upon integrating out the heavy mediator fields, are strongly nonuniversal. We explore the phenomenology of these SUSY flavor models after the latest LHC searches for new physics.

  Title Supersymmetry with dark matter is still natural Type Journal Article

  Abstract We identify the parameter regions of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model (pMSSM) with the minimal possible fine-tuning. We show that the fine-tuning of the pMSSM is not large, nor under pressure by LHC searches. Low sbottom, stop and gluino masses turn out to be less relevant for low fine-tuning than commonly assumed. We show a link between low fine-tuning and the dark matter relic density. Fine-tuning arguments point to models with a dark matter candidate yielding the correct dark matter relic density: a bino-higgsino particle with a mass of 35-155 GeV. Some of these candidates are compatible with recent hints seen in astrophysics experiments such as Fermi-LAT and AMS-02. We argue that upcoming direct search experiments, such as XENON1T, will test all of the most natural solutions in the next few years due to the sensitivity of these experiments on the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross section.

  Title Gauge-invariant implications of the LHCb measurements on lepton-flavor nonuniversality Type Journal Article

  Abstract We study the implications of the recent measurements of R-K and R-K* by the LHCb Collaboration. We do that by adopting a model-independent approach based on the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT), with the dominant new physics (NP) effects encoded in the coefficients of dimension-6 operators respecting the full Standard Model (SM) gauge symmetry. After providing simplified expressions for R-K and R-K*, we determine the implications of the recent LHCb results for these observables on the coefficients of the SMEFT operators at low and high energies. We also take into account all b -> sll data, which combined lead to effective NP scenarios with SM pulls in excess of 5 sigma. Thus, the operators discussed in this paper would be the first dimension-6 terms in the SM Lagrangian to be detected experimentally. Indirect constraints on these operators are also discussed. The results of this paper transcend the singularity of the present situation and set a standard for future analyses in b -> s transitions when the NP is assumed to lie above the electroweak scale.

  Title Masses and decay constants of D-(s)* and B-(s)* mesons with N-f=2+1+1 twisted mass fermions Type Journal Article

  Abstract We present a lattice calculation of the masses and decay constants of D-(s)* and B-(s)* mesons using the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with N-f=2+1+1 dynamical quarks at three values of the lattice spacing a similar to(0.06-0.09) fm. Pion masses are simulated in the range M-pi similar or equal to(210-450) MeV, while the strange and charm sea-quark masses are close to their physical values. We compute the ratios of vector to pseudoscalar masses and decay constants for various values of the heavy-quark mass mh in the range 0.7m(c)(phys) less than or similar to m(h) less than or similar to 3m(c)(phys). In order to reach the physical b-quark mass, we exploit the Heavy Quark Effective Theory prediction that, in the static limit of infinite heavy-quark mass, the considered ratios are equal to one. At the physical point our results are: M-D*/M-D=1.0769(79), M-D*(s)/M-Ds=1.0751(56), f(D)*/f(D)=1.078(36), f(D)*s/f(Ds)=1.087(20), M-B*/M-B=1.0078(15), M-B*(s)/M-Bs=1.0083(10), f(B)*/f(B)=0.958(22) and f(B)*s/f(Bs)=0.974(10). Combining them with the experimental values of the pseudoscalar meson masses (used as input to fix the quark masses) and the values of the pseudoscalar decay constants calculated by ETMC, we get: M-D*=2013(14) MeV, M-D*(s)=2116(11) MeV, f(D)*=223.5(8.4) MeV, f(D)*(s)=268.8(6.6) MeV, M-B*=5320.5(7.6) MeV, M-B*(s)=5411.36(5.3) MeV, f(B)*=185.9(7.2) MeV and f(B)*(s)=223.1(5.4) MeV.

  Abstract Investigations of the existence of pentaquark states containing a single b (anti) quark decaying weakly into four specific final states J/psi K+pi(-)p, J/psi K-pi(-)p, J/psi K-pi(+)p, and J/psi phi(1020)p are reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1) in 7 and 8 TeV pp collisions acquired with the LHCb detector. Signals are not observed and upper limits are set on the product of the production cross section times branching fraction with respect to that of the A(b)(0).

  Title Measurement of the single pi(0) production rate in neutral current neutrino interactions on water Type Journal Article

  Abstract The single pi(0) production rate in neutral current neutrino interactions on water in a neutrino beam with a peak neutrino energy of 0.6 GeV has been measured using the empty set, one of the subdetectors of the T2K near detector. The production rate was measured for data taking periods when the Pempty setD contained water (2.64 x 10(20) protons-on-target) and also periods without water (3.49 x 10(20) protons-on-target). A measurement of the neutral current single pi(0) production rate on water is made using appropriate subtraction of the production rate with water in from the rate with water out of the target region. The subtraction analysis yields 106 +/- 41 +/- 69 signal events where the uncertainties are statistical (stat.) and systematic (sys.) respectively. This is consistent with the prediction of 157 events from the nominal simulation. The measured to expected ratio is 0.68 +/- 0.26(stat) +/- 0.44(sys) +/- 0.12(flux). The nominal simulation uses a flux integrated cross section of 7.63 x 10(-39) cm(2) per nucleon with an average neutrino interaction energy of 1.3 GeV.

  Abstract A search is presented for the direct pair production of the stop, the supersymmetric partner of the top quark, that decays through an R-parity-violating coupling to a final state with two leptons and two jets, at least one of which is identified as a b-jet. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV, collected in 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No significant excess is observed over the Standard Model background, and exclusion limits are set on stop pair production at a 95% confidence level. Lower limits on the stop mass are set between 600 GeV and 1.5 TeV for branching ratios above 10% for decays to an electron or muon and a b-quark.
