Abstract |
We examine the relationship between three approaches (Hadamard, DeWitt-Schwinger, and adiabatic) to the renormalization of expectation values of field operators acting on a charged quantum scalar field. First, we demonstrate that the DeWitt-Schwinger representation of the Feynman Green's function is a particular case of the Hadamard representation. Next, we restrict attention to a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe with time-dependent, purely electric, background electromagnetic field, considering two-, three-, and four-dimensional space-times. Working to the order required for the renormalization of the stress-energy tensor, we find the adiabatic and DeWitt-Schwinger expansions of the Green's function when the space-time points are spatially separated. In two and four dimensions, the resulting DeWitt-Schwinger and adiabatic expansions are identical. In three dimensions, the DeWittSchwinger expansion contains terms of adiabatic order 4 that are not necessary for the renormalization of the stress-energy tensor and hence absent in the adiabatic expansion. The equivalence of the DeWittSchwinger and adiabatic approaches to renormalization in the scenario considered is thereby demonstrated in even dimensions. In odd dimensions the situation is less clear and further investigation is required in order to determine whether adiabatic renormalization is a locally covariant renormalization prescription. |

Abstract |
The weak kaon production off the nucleon induced by neutrinos is studied at the low and intermediate energies of interest for some ongoing and future neutrino oscillation experiments. This process is also potentially important for the analysis of proton decay experiments. We develop a microscopical model based on the SU(3) chiral Lagrangians. The basic parameters of the model are f pi, the pion decay constant, Cabibbo's angle, the proton and neutron magnetic moments, and the axial vector coupling constants for the baryons octet, D and F, that are obtained from the analysis of the semileptonic decays of neutron and hyperons. The studied mechanisms are the main source of kaon production for neutrino energies up to 1.2 to 1.5 GeV for the various channels and the cross sections are large enough to be amenable to be measured by experiments such as Minerva and T2K. |

Abstract |
We report an analysis of charmless hadronic decays of neutral B mesons to the final state (KSK +/-)-K-0 pi(-/+) (sic), using a data sample of (465 +/- 5) x 10(6) B (B) over bar events collected with the BABAR detector at the Gamma(4S) resonance. We observe an excess of signal events with a significance of 5.2 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties and measure the branching fraction to be B(B-0 -> (KSK +/-)-K-0 pi(-/+) (sic) (3.2 +/- 0.5 +/- 0.3) x 10(-6), where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. |

Abstract |
We present a search for core-collapse supernovae in the Milky Way galaxy, using the MiniBooNE neutrino detector. No evidence is found for core-collapse supernovae occurring in our Galaxy in the period from December 14, 2004 to July 31, 2008, corresponding to 98% live time for collection. We set a limit on the core-collapse supernova rate out to a distance of 13.4 kpc to be less than 0.69 supernovae per year at 90% C. L. |

Abstract |
We study the radiative decay into gamma and a baryon of the SU(3) octet and decuplet of nine and ten resonances that are dynamically generated from the interaction of vector mesons with baryons of the octet and the decuplet, respectively. We obtain quite different partial decay widths for the various resonances, and for different charge states of the same resonance, suggesting that the experimental investigation of these radiative decays should bring much information on the nature of these resonances. For the case of baryons of the octet we determine the helicity amplitudes and compare them with experimental data when available. |

Abstract |
The production rate and kinematics of photons produced in association with Z bosons are studied using 2 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collision data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The cross section for p (p) over bar -> l(+)l(-)gamma + X ( where the leptons l are either muons or electrons with dilepton mass M-ll > 40 GeV/c(2), and where the photon has transverse energy E-T(gamma) > 7 GeV and is well separated from the leptons) is 4.6 +/- 0.2(stat) +/- 0.3 (syst) +/- 0.3 (lum) pb, which is consistent with standard model expectations. We use the photon E-T distribution from Z gamma events where the Z has decayed to mu(+) mu(-) ,e(+) e(-), or nu(+) nu(-) to set limits on anomalous (non standard model) trilinear couplings between photons and Z bosons. |

Abstract |
We study the underlying event in proton-antiproton collisions by examining the behavior of charged particles produced in association with a large transverse momentum jet (similar to 2: 2 fb(-1)) or with a Drell-Yan lepton pair (similar to 2.7 fb(-1)) in the Z-boson mass region [70 < M(pair) < 110 GeV/c(2)] as measured by CDF at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. We use the direction of the lepton pair or the leading jet in each event to define regions of eta-phi space that are sensitive to the modeling of the underlying event. The data are corrected to the particle level to remove detector effects and are then compared with several QCD Monte Carlo models. |

Abstract |
In a sample of 467 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP- II collider at SLAC we have observed the decay (B) over bar (0) -> Lambda(+)(c)(p) over bar pi(0) and measured the branching fraction to be (1.94 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.14 +/- 0.50 x 10(-4), where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and the uncertainty on the Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-)pi(+) branching fraction, respectively. We determine an upper limit of 1.5 x 10(-6) at 90% C.L. for the product branching fraction B((B) over bar (0) -> Sigma(+)(c) (2455)(p) over bar) x B(Lambda(+)(c) -> pK(-) pi(+)). Furthermore, we observe an enhancement at the threshold of the invariant mass of the baryon- antibaryon pair. |

Abstract |
We present measurements of the top quark mass using m(T2), a variable related to the transverse mass in events with two missing particles. We use the template method applied to t (t) over bar dilepton events produced in p (p) over bar collisions at Fermilab's Tevatron Collider and collected by the CDF detector. From a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.4 fb(-1), we select 236 t (t) over bar candidate events. Using the m(T2) distribution, we measure the top quark mass to be M-top = 168.0(-4.0)(4.8)(stat) +/- 2.9(syst) GeV/c(2). By combining m(T2) with the reconstructed top quark mass distributions based on a neutrino weighting method, we measure M-top = 169.3 +/- 2.7(stat) +/- 3.2(syst) GeV/c(2). This is the first application of the m(T2) variable in a mass measurement at a hadron collider. |

Abstract |
We reconstruct B-+/- -> DK +/- decays in a data sample collected by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider corresponding to 1 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. We select decay modes where the D meson decays to either K-pi(+) (flavor eigenstate) or K-K+, pi(-)pi(+) (CP-even eigenstates), and measure the direct CP asymmetry A(CP+) = 0.39 +/- 0.17(stat) +/- 0.04(syst), and the double ratio of CP-even to flavor eigenstate branching fractions RCP+ = 1.30 +/- 0.24(stat) +/- 0.12(syst). These measurements will improve the determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle gamma. They are performed here for the first time using data from hadron collisions. |
