Abstract: We search for the rare flavor-changing neutral current process B+ -> K+tau(+)tau(-) using data from the BABAR experiment. The data sample, collected at the center-of-mass energy of the Upsilon(4S) resonance, corresponds to a total integrated luminosity of 424 fb(-1) and to 471 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs. We reconstruct one B meson, produced in the Upsilon(4S) -> B+B- decay, in one of many hadronic decay modes and search for activity compatible with a B+ -> K+tau(+)tau(-) decay in the rest of the event. Each tau lepton is required to decay leptonically into an electron or muon and neutrinos. Comparing the expected number of background events with the data sample after applying the selection criteria, we do not find evidence for a signal. The resulting upper limit, at the 90% confidence level, is B(B+ -> K+tau(+)tau(-)) < 2.25 x 10(-3).

Abstract: Energy differences between analogue states in the T = 1/2 Mg-23-Na-23 mirror nuclei have been measured along the rotational yrast bands. This allows us to search for effects arising from isospin-symmetrybreaking interactions (ISB) and/or shape changes. Data are interpreted in the shell model framework following the method successfully applied to nuclei in the f(7/2) shell. It is shown that the introduction of a schematic ISB interaction of the same type of that used in the f(7/2) shell is needed to reproduce the data. An alternative novel description, applied here for the first time, relies on the use of an effective interaction deduced from a realistic charge-dependent chiral nucleon-nucleon potential. This analysis provides two important results: (i) The mirror energy differences give direct insight into the nuclear skin; (ii) the skin changes along the rotational bands are strongly correlated with the difference between the neutron and proton occupations of the s(1/2) “halo” orbit.

Abstract: The radiative decay Lambda(0 )(b)-> Lambda gamma is observed for the first time using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb(-1) collected by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Its branching fraction is measured exploiting the B-0 -> K*(0)gamma decay as a normalization mode and is found to be B(Lambda(0 )(b)-> Lambda gamma) = (7.1 +/- 1.5 +/- 0.6 +/- 0.7) x 10(-6), where the quoted uncertainties arc statistical, systematic, and systematic from external inputs, respectively. This is the first observation of a radiative decay of a beauty baryon.

Abstract: Observations are reported of different sources of CP violation from an amplitude analysis of B+ -> pi(+)pi(+)pi(-) decays, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb(-1) of pp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. A large CP asymmetry is observed in the decay amplitude involving the tensor f(2)(1270) resonance, and in addition significant CP violation is found in the pi(+)pi S- wave at low invariant mass. The presence of CP violation related to interference between the pi(+)pi S- wave and the P wave B+ -> rho(770)(0)pi(+) amplitude is also established; this causes large local asymmetries but cancels when integrated over the phase space of the decay. The results provide both qualitative and quantitative new insights into CP -violation effects in hadronic B decays.

Abstract: We analyze the spectrum of two- and three-pion states of maximal isospin obtained recently for isosymmetric QCD with pion mass M approximate to 200 MeV in Horz and Hanlon, [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 142002 (2019)]. Using the relativistic three-particle quantization condition, we find similar to 2 sigma evidence for a nonzero value for the contact part of the 3 pi(+) (I = 3) scattering amplitude. We also compare our results to leading-order chiral perturbation theory. We find good agreement at threshold and some tension in the energy dependent part of the 3 pi(+) scattering amplitude. We also find that the 2 pi(+) (I = 2) spectrum is fit well by an s-wave phase shift that incorporates the expected Adler zero.

Abstract: A search for magnetic monopoles and high-electric-charge objects is presented using 34.4 fb(-1) of 13 TeV pp collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2015 and 2016. The considered signature is based upon high ionization in the transition radiation tracker of the inner detector associated with a pencil-shape energy deposit in the electromagnetic calorimeter. The data were collected by a dedicated trigger based on the tracker high-threshold hit capability. The results are interpreted in models of Drell-Yan pair production of stable particles with two spin hypotheses (0 and 1/2) and masses ranging from 200 to 4000 GeV. The search improves by approximately a factor of 5 the constraints on the direct production of magnetic monopoles carrying one or two Dirac magnetic charges and stable objects with electric charge in the range 20 <= vertical bar z vertical bar <= 60 and extends the charge range to 60 < vertical bar z vertical bar <= 100.

Abstract: An amplitude analysis of B- -> J/psi Lambda(p) over bar decays is performed using 4400 signal candidates selected on a data sample of pp collisions recorded at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb(-1). A narrow resonance in the J/psi Lambda system, consistent with a pentaquark candidate with strangeness, is observed with high significance. The mass and the width of this new state are measured to be 4338.2 +/- 0.7 +/- 0.4 MeV and 7.0 +/- 1.2 +/- 1.3 MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The spin is determined to be 1/2 and negative parity is preferred. Because of the small Q-value of the reaction, the most precise single measurement of the B- mass to date, 5279.44 +/- 0.05 +/- 0.07 MeV, is obtained.

Abstract: We report measurements of the polarization of W bosons from top-quark decays using 2.7 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions collected by the CDF II detector. Assuming a top-quark mass of 175 GeV/c(2), three measurements are performed. A simultaneous measurement of the fraction of longitudinal (f(0)) and right-handed (f(0)) W bosons yields the model- independent results f(0) =0. 88 +/- 0.11(stat) +/- 0.06(syst) and f(+) = 0.15 +/- 0.07(stat) +/- 0.06(syst) with a correlation coefficient of -0.59. A measurement of f(0) [f(+)] constraining f(+) [f(0)] to its standard model value of 0.0 [0.7] yields f(0) 0.70 + 0.07(stat) +/- 0.04(syst) [f(+) – 0.01 +/- 0.02(stat) +/- 0.05(syst)]. All these results are consistent with standard model expectations. We achieve the single most precise measurements of f(0) for both the model- independent and modeldependent determinations.

Abstract: We report the observation of the decay B(-) -> D(s)(()*()+)K(-)l(-)(nu) over bar (l) based on 342 fb(-1) of data collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e(+)e(-) storage rings at SLAC. A simultaneous fit to three D(s)(+) decay chains is performed to extract the signal yield from measurements of the squared missing mass in the B meson decay. We observe the decay B(-) -> D(s)(()*()+)K(-)l(-)(nu) over bar (l) with a significance greater than 5 standard deviations (including systematic uncertainties) and measure its branching fraction to be B(B(-) -> D(s)(()*())K(-)l(-)(nu) over bar (l) = [6.13(-1.03)(+1.04)(stat) +/- 0.43(syst) +/- 0.51 (B(D(s)))] X 10(-4), where the last error reflects the limited knowledge of the D(s) branching fractions.

Abstract: This Letter presents a measurement of the W(+)W(-) production cross section in root s = 7 TeV pp collisions by the ATLAS experiment, using 34 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity produced by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Selecting events with two isolated leptons, each either an electron or a muon, 8 candidate events are observed with an expected background of 1.7 +/- 0.6 events. The measured cross section is 41(-16)(+20)(stat) +/- 5(syst) +/- 1(lumi) pb, which is consistent with the standard model prediction of 44 +/- 3 pb calculated at next-to-leading order in QCD.
