Title Observation of the baryonic B decay (B)over-bar(0) -> Lambda(+)(c)(Lambda)over-barK(-) Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 84 Issue (up) 7 Pages 071102 - 7pp
Keywords
Abstract We report the observation of the baryonic B decay (B) over bar (0) -> Lambda(+)(c)Lambda K(-) with a significance larger than 7 standard deviations based on 471 x 10(6) B (B) over bar pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at SLAC. We measure the branching fraction for the decay (B) over bar (0) -> Lambda(+)(c)Lambda K(-) to be (3.8 +/- 0.8(stat) +/- 0.2(sys) +/- 1.0(Lambda c)(+)) x 10(-5). The uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty in the Lambda(+)(c) branching fraction. We find that the Lambda(+)(c)K(-) invariant-mass distribution shows an enhancement above 3.5 GeV/c(2).

Title Analysis of the D+ -> K- pi(+) e(+) nu(e) decay channel Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 83 Issue (up) 7 Pages 072001 - 35pp
Keywords
Abstract Using 347: 5 fb(-1) of data recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II electron-positron collider, 244 x 10(3) signal events for the D+ -> K- pi(+)e(+)nu(e) decay channel are analyzed. This decay mode is dominated by the (K) over bar*(892)(0) contribution. We determine the (K) over bar*(892)(0) parameters: m(K*(892)0) (895.4 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.2) MeV/c(2),Gamma(0)(K*(892)0) (46.5 +/- 0.3 +/- 0.2) MeV/c(2), and the Blatt-Weisskopf parameter r(BW) = 2.1 +/- 0.5 +/- 0.5 (GeV/c)(-1), where the first uncertainty comes from statistics and the second from systematic uncertainties. We also measure the parameters defining the corresponding hadronic form factors at q(2) = 0 (r(V) = V(0)/A(1)(0) = 1.463 +/- 0.031, r(2) = A(2)(0)/A(1)(0) = 0.801 +/- 0.020 +/- 0.020) and the value of the axial-vector pole mass parametrizing the q(2) variation of A(1) and A(2): m(A) (2.63 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.13) GeV/c(2). The S-wave fraction is equal to (5.79 +/- 0.16 +/- 0: 15)%. Other signal components correspond to fractions below 1%. Using the D+ -> K-pi(+)pi(+) channel as a normalization, we measure the D+ semileptonic branching fraction: B(D+ K-pi(+)e(+)nu(e)) (4.00 +/- 0: 03 +/- 0.04 +/- 0.09) x 10(-2), where the third uncertainty comes from external inputs. We then obtain the value of the hadronic form factor A(1) at q(2) 0: A(1)(0) 0.6200 +/- 0.0056 +/- 0.0065 +/- 0.0071. Fixing the P-wave parameters, we measure the phase of the S wave for several values of the K pi mass. These results confirm those obtained with K pi production at small momentum transfer in fixed target experiments.

Title Measurement of the mass and width of the D_s1 (2536)+ meson Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 83 Issue (up) 7 Pages 072003 - 14pp
Keywords
Abstract The decay width and mass of the D-s1(2536)(+) meson are measured via the decay channel D-s1(+) -> (D*+KS0) using 385 fb(-1) of data recorded with the BABAR detector in the vicinity of the Gamma(4S) resonance at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The result for the decay width is Gamma(D-s1(+)) = 92 +/- 0.03(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.) MeV. For the mass, a value of m(D-s1(+)) = 2535.08 +/- 0.01(stat.) +/- 0.15(syst.) MeV/c(2) is obtained. The mass difference between the D-s1(+) and the D*+ is measured to be m(D-s1(+)) – m(D*+) = 524.83 +/- 0.01(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.) MeV/c(2), representing a significant improvement compared to the current world average. The unnatural spin-parity assignment for the D-s1(+) meson is confirmed.

Keywords Time calibration; Neutrino telescopes; ANTARES
Abstract The ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope comprises a three-dimensional array of photomultipliers to detect the Cherenkov light induced by upgoing relativistic charged particles originating from neutrino interactions in the vicinity of the detector. The large scattering length of light in the deep sea facilitates an angular resolution of a few tenths of a degree for neutrino energies exceeding 10 TeV. In order to achieve this optimal performance, the time calibration procedures should ensure a relative time calibration between the photomultipliers at the level of similar to 1 ns. The methods developed to attain this level of precision are described.

Title Measurement of the t(t)over-bar production cross section with an in situ calibration of b-jet identification efficiency Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 83 Issue (up) 7 Pages 071102 - 8pp

Abstract A measurement of the top-quark pair-production cross section in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.12 fb(-1) collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab is presented. Decays of top-quark pairs into the final states ev + jets and μv+ jets are selected, and the cross section and the b-jet identification efficiency are determined using a new measurement technique which requires agreement between the measured cross sections with exactly one and with multiple identified b quarks from the top-quark decays. Assuming a top-quark mass of 175 GeV/c(2), a cross section of 8.5 +/- 0.6(stat) +/- 0.7(syst)pb is measured.

Title B(bar) -> X_s gamma rate and CP asymmetry within the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 83 Issue (up) 7 Pages 074011 - 8pp
Keywords
Abstract In the two-Higgs-doublet model the alignment of the Yukawa matrices in flavor space guarantees the absence of flavor-changing neutral currents at tree level, while introducing new sources for CP violation parametrized in a very economical way [Antonio Pich and Paula Tuzon, Phys. Rev. D 80, 091702 (2009)]. This implies a potentially large influence in a number of processes, b -> s gamma being a prominent example where rather high experimental and theoretical precision meet. We analyze the CP rate asymmetry in this inclusive decay and determine the resulting constraints on the model parameters. We demonstrate the compatibility with previously obtained limits [Martin Jung, Antonio Pich, and Paula Tuzon, J. High Energy Phys. 11 (2010) 003]. Moreover, we extend the phenomenological analysis of the branching ratio, and examine the influence of resulting correlations on the like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry in B decays.

Title QCD sum rule determination of the charm-quark mass Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Physical Review D Abbreviated Journal Phys. Rev. D
Volume 83 Issue (up) 7 Pages 074014 - 4pp
Keywords
Abstract QCD sum rules involving mixed inverse moment integration kernels are used in order to determine the running charm-quark mass in the (MS) over bar scheme. Both the high and the low energy expansion of the vector current correlator are involved in this determination. The optimal integration kernel turns out to be of the form p(s) = 1 -(s(0)/s)(2), where s(0) is the onset of perturbative QCD. This kernel enhances the contribution of the well known narrow resonances, and reduces the impact of the data in the range s similar or equal to 20-25 GeV2. This feature leads to a substantial reduction in the sensitivity of the results to changes in s(0), as well as to a much reduced impact of the experimental uncertainties in the higher resonance region. The value obtained for the charm-quark mass in the (MS) over bar scheme at a scale of 3 GeV is (m) over bar (c)(3 GeV) = 987 +/- 9 MeV, where the error includes all sources of uncertainties added in quadrature.

Abstract We report on a search for CP violation in the decay D-+/- -> K-S(0)pi(+/-) using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 469 fb(-1) collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy e(+)e(-) storage rings. The CP- violating decay rate asymmetry A(CP) is determined to be (-0.44 +/- 0: 13(stat) +/- 0.10(syst))%, consistent with zero at 2.7 sigma and with the standard model prediction of (-0.332 +/- 0.006)%. This is currently the most precise measurement of this parameter.

Title Monte Carlo study of forward pi(0) production spectra to be measured by the LHCf experiment for the purpose of benchmarking hadron interaction models at 10(17) eV Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Astroparticle Physics Abbreviated Journal Astropart Phys.
Volume 34 Issue (up) 7 Pages 513-520
Keywords High energy cosmic rays; LHC; LHCf; High energy pi(0) production spectra
Abstract The LHCf experiment aims to improve knowledge of forward neutral particle production spectra at the LHC energy which is relevant for the interpretation of air shower development of high energy cosmic rays. Two detectors, each composed of a pair of sampling and imaging calorimeters, have been installed at the forward region of IP1 to measure pi(0) energy spectra above 600 GeV. In this paper, we present a Monte Carlo study of the pi(0) measurements to be performed with one of the LHCf detectors for proton-proton collisions at root s = 14 TeV. In approximately 40 min of operation at luminosity 0.8 x 10(29) cm(-2) s(-1) during the beam commissioning phase of LHC, about 1.5 x 10(4) pi(0) events are expected to be obtained at two transverse positions of the detector. The backgrounds from interactions of secondary particles with beam pipes and interactions of beam particles with residual gas in the beam pipes are expected to be less than 0.1% of the signal from pi(0)s. We also discuss the capability of LHCf measurements to discriminate between the various hadron interaction models that are used for simulation of high energy air showers, such as DPMJET3.03, QGSJETII-03, SIBYLL2.1 and EPOS1.99.

Abstract By introducing three Higgs fields that are SU(2) doublets and a flavor permutational symmetry, S(3), in the theory, we extend the concepts of flavor and generations to the Higgs sector and formulate a Minimal S(3)-Invariant Extension of the Standard Model. The mass matrices of the neutrinos and charged leptons are re-parameterized in terms of their eigenvalues, then the neutrino mixing matrix, V(PMNS), is computed and exact, explicit analytical expressions for the neutrino mixing angles as functions of the masses of neutrinos and charged leptons are obtained in excellent agreement with the latest experimental data. We also compute the branching ratios of some selected flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes, as well as the contribution of the exchange of neutral flavor-changing scalars to the anomaly of the magnetic moment of the muon, as functions of the masses of charged leptons and the neutral Higgs bosons. We find that the S(3) x Z(2) flavor symmetry and the strong mass hierarchy of the charged leptons strongly suppress the FCNC processes in the leptonic sector, well below the present experimental bounds by many orders of magnitude. The contribution of FCNC's to the anomaly of the muon's magnetic moment is small, but not negligible.
