Abstract: T2K reports its first measurements of the parameters governing the disappearance of (nu) over bar μin an off-axis beam due to flavor change induced by neutrino oscillations. The quasimonochromatic (nu) over bar μbeam, produced with a peak energy of 0.6 GeVat J-PARC, is observed at the far detector Super-Kamiokande, 295 km away, where the (nu) over bar μsurvival probability is expected to be minimal. Using a data set corresponding to 4.01 x 10(20) protons on target, 34 fully contained mu-like events were observed. The best-fit oscillation parameters are sin(2) ((theta) over bar (23)) = 0.45 and vertical bar Delta(m) over bar (2)(32)vertical bar = 2.51 x 10(-3) eV(2) with 68% confidence intervals of 0.38-0.64 and 2.26-2.80 x 10(-3) eV(2), respectively. These results are in agreement with existing antineutrino parameter measurements and also with the nu(mu) disappearance parameters measured by T2K.

Abstract: This Letter presents a measurement of the inelastic proton-proton cross section using 60 μb(-1) of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy root s of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Inelastic interactions are selected using rings of plastic scintillators in the forward region (2.07 <vertical bar eta vertical bar < 3.86) of the detector. A cross section of 68.1 +/- 1.4 mb is measured in the fiducial region. xi = M-X(2) > s > 10(-6), where M-X is the larger invariant mass of the two hadronic systems separated by the largest rapidity gap in the event. In this xi range the scintillators are highly efficient. For diffractive events this corresponds to cases where at least one proton dissociates to a system with M-X > 13 GeV. The measured cross section is compared with a range of theoretical predictions. When extrapolated to the full phase space, a cross section of 78.1 +/- 2.9 mb is measured, consistent with the inelastic cross section increasing with center-of-mass energy.

Abstract: ATLAS has measured two-particle correlations as a function of the relative azimuthal angle, Delta phi, and pseudorapidity, Delta eta, in root s = 13 and 2.76 TeV pp collisions at the LHC using charged particles measured in the pseudorapidity interval vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.5. The correlation functions evaluated in different intervals of measured charged-particle multiplicity show a multiplicity-dependent enhancement at Delta phi similar to 0 that extends over a wide range of Delta eta, which has been referred to as the “ridge.” Per-trigger-particle yields, Y(Delta phi) are measured over 2 < vertical bar Delta eta vertical bar < 5. For both collision energies, the Y(Delta phi) distribution in all multiplicity intervals is found to be consistent with a linear combination of the per-trigger-particle yields measured in collisions with less than 2 phi reconstructed tracks, and a constant combinatoric contribution modulated by cos (2 Delta phi). The fitted Fourier coefficient, nu(2,2), exhibits factorization, suggesting that the ridge results from per-event cos (2 phi) modulation of the single-particle distribution with Fourier coefficients nu(2). The nu(2) values are presented as a function of multiplicity and transverse momentum. They are found to be approximately constant as a function of multiplicity and to have a p(T) dependence similar to that measured in p + Pb and Pb + Pb collisions. The nu(2) values in the 13 and 2.76 TeV data are consistent within uncertainties. These results suggest that the ridge in pp collisions arises from the same or similar underlying physics as observed in p + Pb collisions, and that the dynamics responsible for the ridge has no strong root s dependence.

Abstract: The origin of small mixing among the quarks and a large mixing among the neutrinos has been an open question in particle physics. In order to answer this question, we postulate general relations among the quarks and the leptonic mixing angles at a high scale, which could be the scale of Grand Unified Theories. The central idea of these relations is that the quark and the leptonic mixing angles can be unified at some high scale either due to some quark lepton symmetry or some other underlying mechanism and as a consequence, the mixing angles of the leptonic sector are proportional to that of the quark sector. We investigate the phenomenology of the possible relations where the leptonic mixing angles are proportional to the quark mixing angles at the unification scale by taking into account the latest experimental constraints from the neutrino sector. These relations are able to explain the pattern of leptonic mixing at the low scale and thereby hint that these relations could be possible signatures of a quark lepton symmetry or some other underlying quark lepton mixing unification mechanism at some high scale linked to Grand Unified Theories.

Abstract: The first observation of the B-s(0) -> (D) over bar K-0(S)0 decay mode and evidence for the B-s(0) -> (D) over bar*K-0(S)0 decay mode are reported. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb-1 collected in pp collisions by LHCb at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The branching fractions are measured to be B(B-s(0) -> (D) over bar (0)(K) over bar (0)) = [4.3 +/- 0.5(stat) +/- 0.3 (syst) +/- 0.3(frag) +/- 0.6(norm)] x 10(-4), B(B-s(0) -> (D) over bar*(0)(K) over bar (0)) = [2.8 +/- 1.0(stat) +/- 0.3 (syst) +/- 0.2(frag) +/- 0.4(norm)] x 10(-4), where the uncertainties are due to contributions coming from statistical precision, systematic effects, and the precision of two external inputs, the ratio f(s)/f(d) and the branching fraction of B-0 (D) over bar K-0(S)0, which is used as a calibration channel.
